Learning to judge television programs is a big project for the freshmen who visit a television studio as part of a field trip. ln the field of literature the English classes complement their study of The M er- chant of Venice by making booklets of the life and works of Shakespeare. The sopho- mores read Julius Caesar, and make their study easier by listening to the recordings which bring the play from the stage to En- glish classroom. Analysis of such writers as Irving and Crane starts jun- iors on the path towards an understanding of human nature. Continuing the study, sen- iors find themselves reflected in the tales of Chaucer, in the plays of Shakespeare, and in literary ,characters throughout the centuries. Increased knowledge of human emotions un- folds new horizons which enable the stu- dents to regard others with understanding and respect. Bridging the gap between Shakespeare and young moderns is a long jump, but enthusiastic seniors find it a re- warding venture. , I 4-1 art lends beauty to the world . . . Painting and sculptoring are some of the oldest Ways of expressing one's thoughts and emotions. Since self-expression is an im- portant part of living, St. Vincent offers a Well rounded course in art. Throughout the school year students of the art class learn different types of creative activity in art from pen sketches and Water colors to cer- amics. Among the activities in which stu- dents participate are decorating for school dances and publicizing other events in post- ers. At Christmas time this year, art students added a new project to the list. Students are encour- aged to converse in French whenever pos- sible and learn to combine fun with duty in other language studies. Presenting French radio programs and writing commercials proves a novel experience for first year stu- dents, while second year pupils enjoy listen- ing to records, learning new songs, and en- acting French plays. 1 1 1575 xx. For the thirty-second time Coach Edward P. Wentz took a group of St. Vincent stu- dents and built them into an Irish football squad. Assisted by backfield coach Dick Pitts and line coaches George Florin and Leo Longville, Coach Wentz incorporated a spirit of sportsmanship and team loyalty into each member of the Irish eleven. These qualities became evident as the Irish faced a tough schedule which featured bigger and more experienced teams. Although the inexperienced team met dis- couraging losses during most of the season, the traditional St. Vincent spirit, vigorous student body support, and perseverance of the players kept the team alive. Through these losses the team received what Coach Wentz could not provide during Weekday practice-game experience. As the season scores will testify, game after game the team's abilities mounted. Because of their season record, the Irish were the definite underdogs when it came time to meet their arch-rival, St. Mary. The crowning of the Queen, Patti Williams, and the introduction of her court highlighted the Homecoming Dance. Seniors transformed the gym into a royal ballroom using chrysanthe- mums as a theme for the decorations. Hanging along one wall was a string of pennants with the number and name of each senior football player, and forming a guard of honor Were majorette heads made of cardboard which rested against the baskets. On either side of the throne life- size majorettes stood at attention. During inter- mission Queen Patti slowly ascended the steps and took her seat on the throne. Under an arch entwined with chrysanthemums, Patti was crowned by John Stober who presented her with a football autographed by each senior play- er. The clear, brisk night of December 28 set the stage for the Winterland Whirl, the annual Christmas formal, sponsored this year by the junior class. The dance featured Frankie Rey- nolds and his orchestra playing music. An un- usual color scheme combined pink, White, and black to lend a holiday atmosphere to the gym- nasium, but ballerina skirts Were the deciding factor between a ballroom and a gym floor. Pink candles and matching bulbs decorated the re- freshment table from which punch and cookies were served during intermission. In their hands the seniors now hold a coveted diploma. To them it symbolizes twelve years of work, of hope, of prayer. Beginning with Bacca- laureate service and followed by a break- fast, the graduation ceremony highlights a day filled with excitement and climaxes the end of hcarefree school daysn for some, and opens rich horizons for seniors who have won scholarships or are assured of a college education. Manhood and womanhood awards are presented to outstanding indi- viduals of the class. At the reception held in the gymnasium after the ceremonies, the seniors receive the congratulations and best wishes of friends and relatives.
