He it is who is responsible for a modern chapter engraved in Catholic history and doctrine- that doctrine taught so faithfully and so loyally not only from the pulpit, but in Catholic educational institutions throughout the world. The year of our graduation, 1955, is the 75th anniversary of the proclamation of Thomas Aquinas as Patron of Catholic Schools. It is for this reason that We have chosen for the theme of our annual, the Angelic Doctor, Thomas Aquinas. Pope Pius XII, the Marian Year pontiff, has nobly followed in the footsteps of Pope Leo XIII, who first proclaimed Thomas as our Patron. It is to him, the reigning Pontiff, therefore, that we respectfully dedicate our labors. v 'ff-3 axzfwg, 1 X 56- 1 - 2 aw li, - f WI? 'I '5532i, 5 .. ,v .X wif- f. . . Students of Saint Vincent seek truth as the answer to modern problems. Solutions are discovered in vocational and commercial classes, mathematics and science laboratories, health and social studies discussions. Integrity forms the basis for language and fine arts as well as for school publications such as the yearbook and paper, which pro- claim the truth we study. Saint Vincent, through the light of Thomas whose brilliance illumined the Church and the world, seeks the ultimate answers that lead to Christ. The Ohio Bell Telephone Company visits Saint Vincent periodically to give interesting and helpful suggestions on tele- phone technique. Carol Lombardi, Charles Casey, Albert Castner, Margaret Lange, James Aldrich, and Alice Polsi- nelli offer sentiments to suit your taste be it Irish, German, Italian, or Swe- dish. This is the students' chance to play teacher, so that through exhibits and activities they can make practicable their knowl- edge of U. S. government, its problems and functions. The tools of our democracy . . . The group discussion seems to indicate that we've come a long way from Cicero's day. It's been a long hard climb but democratic government remains basically the same. Comparing our present government with that of Rome are Francis Duffy, Rebecca Hibbs, Kathleen Herdman, Joseph Bandrow- sky, John Deagan, Dorothy Hillegas and Carol Case. Joan Flanigan seems to be kibitzing as she peers over J ohn's shoulder. He displays to the group a picture of the U. S. Senate in action. Sandra Beckwith and Ed- ward Kernan are listening intently to Dennis Shaul's account of the I Speak for Democracy contest in which Dennis placed sec- ond. This year's annual contest provides a new ex- perience for these high school contestants -- the presentation of their speeches before a large television audience. Through social studies classes, English composi- tion, and speech instruc- tion, participating students gain valuable training in the fundamentals of the American Way. Thus St. , Vincent cultivates the seed of true democratic ideals. . . . free speech and the ballot Have you registered? as-are ssssss A A Why do people give up their lives to preserve a free nation and then are willing to give up their freedom through negli- gence? That was the big question in Sister Loretta's senior problems class. Her students met the idea of doing something with en- thusiasm. Get out and vote November 2, was their plea, and they made sure that this city heard it. Drivers decorated their cars in patriotic red, white and blue and adorned them with big signs urging Ak- ronites to turn out at the polls on election day. An- other group displayed their fortitude by hoofing their way around town distribut- T ing handbills. Rosemary McNellis, Pat Richak, and A Marilyn Chudick had the most fun with their sand- wich board campaign in l downtown Akron. 15 Today, a thought-Tomorrow, Freshmen vs. Atmospheric Pressure Pull boys! The opponents in this contest are, left to right, John Caruso, Arthur Batal, Gary Hoban, Albert Castner, Clarence Workman, and John Fox. Dubious- ly eyeing her own experiment is Alice Polsinelli. Seated are Kathleen Sullivan, Jeannette Roman, Pat McBride, James Buza, Jean Filippi, and Nancy Scheeser. 23 Skidoo-peel it, Gene! 'Come with me Lucille, in my merry Oldsmobile. Visual aid is a favorite teaching method of stu- dents. Chris Van Devere tries this time tested man- ner on Delores Ruff and James O'Conner and proves, as is often the case, that there is more than one teacher in the class. Geom- etry students help to famil- iarize each other with equi- lateral triangles, tangents, arcs, and such figures until they are masters of the ge- ometric plane. Hoping to get a couple of their own ideas in black and white, Edward Kernan and Edward Palazzo are Watching closely for a good opportunity. Shaping it up in math Dollars and sense Aided by charts and careful figuring, gen- eral mathematics stu- dents put classroom principles to practical use. Students find their studies directed toward solving problems which they may face in future years. Math class de- velops a knowledge of buying and budgeting. Standing is Mrs. Estelle Shifflet, and seated in the foreground is Kathleen Hurtz. Miss Clare Bell is typing in the background. Below: John L. Jennings of the First National Bank conducts general business students through a behind the scenes tour of a banking establishment. A detailed explanation of an intricate adding machine provides cause for all the interest. Patricia Fagan, Lorene Schlaker, Maureen Crowley, Patricia Theobald, Deanna Cortesi, Jean Wood, Linda Abell, Maureen Burns, Emma Sideri, and Rosemary Basilo listen attentively. What they hear is applied knowledge of what they are learning in the classroom. The world of books has come to life in the world of business. . . . future careers '40 x -- Nr Je? Geraldine Marzano, Pat McAleese, and Mary Jane Hudak agree that the new appliance looks right at home in the modern kit- chen. The lab is also the setting for the Holiday Tea. The officers of the Home Ec Club-Noel Sturmi, Joan Gmerek, and Julia Censky -- prepare cookies and punch for the occasion. The Christmas party is one of the club's yearly pro- jects and a favorite with all. 21 . . . for mental alertness Acute malnutrition Is there a skeleton in your closet? These students have found one in the biology laboratory. James Palmeri examines the bones of the hand, while the not-so- brave Mary Ellen Garry and Mariann Kuebler pre- fer to look on. Mary Ellen and Marian have a guide sheet which explains the Work- ings of Oz, Before long he'll be an old friend and they'll know him well. Nature Boy has captured the spotlight. Marianne Starner, Blanche Richards, Mary Schmidt and Eugenia Bachmann explore for a better understanding of the human body. Among the activities of the health class is a trip to Cleveland Health Museum to visit Juno, the Transparent Talking Woman. Juno is a life-sized plastic model of a human figure, complete with organs, bones, and other structures. She is Wired for sound so that she can tell her audience about the wonders of the body. As she talks, various parts of her body light up and are seen through transparent layers. The pen becomes . . . Be these printefs devils? Among co-curricular activ- ities which blend work and fun, is the editing of the l monthly paper, the Vin- centian. Work, skill, and patience have merited All American N.S.P.A., All Catholic, and Medalist C.S. P.A. awards for the paper. Here, Tom Ost, Margaret Sherman, Frances Palisin, Mary Ellen Doran, and Frank Quine spent an after- noon correcting type at the printing shop. Days and weeks of interviewing, planning, writing and re-writing, then finally the day arrives-the day of distribution of the Vin- centian to students. The completed paper is ample reward for the hard work which is its predecessor. On the day of this year's fourth edition, staff members celebrated in A-1 fashion. A cake with four candles marked the occasion. Standing left to right are 24 Nancy Gardner, Generose Gill, Dorothy Wozniak, Ann Walter, Dennis Shaul, Carol Huber, Dianne Morris, Rita Walko, and Geraldine Keenan. Seated around the cake are Patricia Abraham, Mary King, John Manko, Nancy Gardner, Emilie Delagrange, and David Gill. The candles could also be for John Manko who marks four years of cartooning for the paper. . . . a clarion Work, work, and more Work! That's the function of the Shamrock staff. Carol Fassnacht, Ann Curtis, and Mary Lou Richards, Jane Pringle, Mary Jane Michalec, and Janice Farris feel that Way too. These typists and solicitors combine their talents willingly to get the patrons who make the yearbook possible. Each girl will admit that it's Well Worth her effort. Not to be out done by these hard workers are the copy Writers: Antoinette Benko, Larry Karadin, Edward Rolph, Charlotte Hummel, Zaunia Becker, and Daniel Metz, who buckle down to the ,tasks of Writing for the Shamrock. Mary King, Jacqueline Maroon, Frances Timlin, Eileen McAleese, and Car- ol Bayman volunteer their services for the job of filing, a big part of securing advertisements. Map- ping out the plan for the yearbook is the layout staff: Tom Costello, Mary Codispoti, Madeleine Gal- lagher, and Michael Aldrich. A printing device captures the attentions of Joseph Egan, Mary In- man, and Theresa Seman. Taking note of the work- ings of a machine used for letter press are Sister Diana, Joseph Egan, Patricia Shand, Molly Jo Hunt- er, Gerald Frient and Don C. Kisabeth, who is con- ducting them on a tour through the Gray Printing Co. which prints the Shamrock. The life of a year- book staff may be rough, but everyone agrees that there will be double satisfaction when the l955 edition of the Shamrock is completed. 1 N -C I X If .vw l aww, 3, ,W E H, as fa.. if ss,- L- Sw. a 1. af +- Sgeging A Pfam .Aclfwn The twentieth century seeks a plan of action-a plan which enables each man to place himself rightfully in the society of men, a plan which gives him the surest and safest means of reaching his goal-God. The latter procedure, in particular, was a real practice in the democratic Way as die- hards for other colors and styles joined the majority. He compared the three days of prayer and meditation to the television show This ls Your Life. God is the sponsor of the showg We are the stars. It is up to us to make the audience, who is Christ, desire the product, which is our souls. Each contest- ant may receive abundant graces and blessings. Silence is an all important element of retreat. The Holy Ghost whispers to us. He never shouts. To hear Him We must be still. Here, Father Corrigan elevates the host in the Mass on the opening day of re- treat. Bernard Gannon assists him while Michael Aldrich rings the bell. What greater time is there to become better friends with God than retreat! 48 Seniors anticipate future . . . Ring ceremony is the lime- light of senior activities in the fall. Class President, Carl Reish, assists Mon- signor Edward B. Conry with the distribution of class rings. Engraved with the student's initials and stamped with two medals is the gold ring of St. Vin- cent High School bearing the school emblem. Mari- lyn Collins, Kathryn Con- ry, and Paul Dolensky are just three of the 206 seniors who excitedly received their ring, symbolizing loy- alty to our school and its ideals. This solemn affair is the first of stepping stones for the graduates, and the commencement of a new life in the business, professional, and educa- tional world. Toward the eternal commencement . . . and 'reminisce the past Four senior officials leaf through past yearbooks seeking inspiration for present and future goals. Joseph Kormanik, treas- urer, Noel Sturmi, secre- tary, Carol Fassnacht, vice- president, and Carl Reish, president, are the class leaders for 1955. This loyal group is the main factor in securing unity in the senior class. Through the expe- rience class officers gain in school life they are more adequately prepared to fulfill their roles as future leaders and citizens. William Arvin Bill St. Joseph . . . The twentieth century seeks an exemplar of human living. Students at Saint Vincent present the actions of their every- day life to Christ through the Morning Offering. I offer thee my prayers, work, joys and sufferings .... -all school activities in which I participate, particularly those which I share with other members of the Mystical Body-my social life, my recreation. Each student asks for help in making these acts more perfect when he prays, O holy Thomas, ob- tain for us from God, an unshaken faith, a firm charity, a most chaste life, and true knowledge. Obtain for me, O my sweetest Lady, real charity . . . that I may disregard no one, nor judge others unkindly, nor in my heart prefer myself to anyone. -St. Thomas Aquinas MA blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums C ff' S Under the baton of Robert F. Lewis in his third year as band director, the 1954 edition of the Fighting Irish Marching Band emerges the finest in the history of the school. All the students and alumni have rea- son to feel personal pride in each precision step and each spirited march. During the penny bazaar, the student body raised money to provide new uniforms and instruments for the entire band. Row 1, left to 1-ight: T. Michalec, D. Rickus, A. DeCasper, J. Lang, C. 'Mi11er, P. A senior class with great abilities and talent developed one of the finer balanced teams of Coach Ed Wentz's thirty-plus years in the business. The presence of an apt senior re- serve made injuries less critical to the team rating, Gene Beskitt, Tom Costello, and John Zampino bolstering the bench support. The offensive and defensive units credited the school with one of the most solid teams in St. V. history, both platoons being superb throughout the year. In close contests, how- ever, the defense proved itself able to bear the burden. High hearts and healthy lungs One, two, three, four, five, six, seven! All good children go to heaven .... Such fa- miliar cheers as this year-old favorite bolster the Irish spirit when things look dark. From the gridiron to the court, the cheerleaders let it be known that the Irish spirit is back of the team. Their antics have made them outstanding at sports events and cheer rallies, as it is up to them to pep up flagging morale when the chips are down. Hats off to the yell specialists: Denny Fagan, Dick Roesh, Jim Dameron, and Bob Hoffman. . . . our loyalty High hearts and high steps To the tune of Anchors Aweigh these spry misses high-step it onto Green Street field. Whirling and twirling, they'll do any feat their performance requires as batons flash and plumes dance in rhythm with bass drums and tubas. Decked out in true Irish fashion are, left to right, Pat Richak, Jean Bowman, Judy Hesidence, Rosemary McNellis, Jane Devereux, and Maureen Scott. Miss- ing is Pat Boles, the major- ette's stand-in. These top-grade seniors' dominated Akron All-City and Northern Ohio All-Catholic football selections. Securing posts on the offensive first team in the city were Ed Toth Ctacklej and Frank Kremblas Cquarter- backj. Chick Saunders captured first team defense at left end, while others to receive awards were Russ Pier Cguardj and Mike Flynn Ctacklejg second team, Jim Dudek Cendj and third team, Gene Iacomini Cbackj. With this healthy crew, Coach Wentz was able to employ his best forma- tions and most deceptive plays to retain District Championship. Victories mark . . . Sharing honors for the District Parochial Title Trophy, co-captains Frank Krem- blas and Mike Flynn exhibit this annual award, synonymous with Irish football clubs. In the possession of the Irish since the beginning of the title series, this trophy continues to abide with the green in '54, The possibility of retaining the championship looks assuring, but present underclassmen must do the de- fending. The title has never been relin- quished, but each year a new sprout of spirit keeps the Irish on top. Row 1 left to frzght: J. Pfeiffer, R. Meadows, J. Zampino, P. Doran, L Nist M Flynn, F. The game was played at Memorial Hall. At the left Tony DeLuca C255 follows Mike Michaels C345 of East. Jack Malloy C245 rushes to cover Ernie Quining C325. The final score was 53-47 with St. V. on top. 2 5 N X N Row 1, left to right: R. Ochs, G. Kuchenbrod, J. Buza, C. Casey, D. Gorbach, J. Franjish, C. Fenn. Row 2 G Yingling, M. Hunter, A. These are the freshman cagers who are the future reserves of St. Vincent. Now these boys are learning the fundamentals of bas- ketball from Coach Edward P. Wentz, a mentor who can inculcate thoroughly the principles and sportsmanship essential to the game. With every new game there is put to use the knowledge and skills that were acquired through many practices and drills. But even more important is the experience gained in an actual game. Instead of playing their games after school during the week and on Saturdays, reserves, pictured with the varsity, will be playing the same night as the varsity. There will be more spectators watching them and hence greater pressure will be upon them then. The reserves are the future backbone of the varsity. These lads will either make or break an Irish sea- son, but more than likely, their Irish spirit will pull them through on the top of the heap. With the coaching that these hoop- sters receive, they have an advantage-plus over every team in the city. Vincent Vincent Vincent . The '55 version of the Irish Basketballers rattled its loss column heavily again. On the positive side, the victories were tough and hard fought. A few wins took tremendous recovery effort to dewall the deficit built earlier in the games. Frank Kremblas hit with a seventeen toinineeteen point barrage throughout the year, while Ray Sadley chipped in at the slackened periods with some skillful caging. Under the boards, Jack Malloy, Dick Estadt and Jack Crangle grabbed off the rebounds to pitch to Gene Iacomini for the fast-break. Gene Iac- omini pumped in the double figures several times besides having been play engineer. Yet the sharpshooting, plays, and board con- trol contributed to only too few successful games. The points seemed to come freely, but the opposition found .it less difficult to score. This effect indicates a troublesome defense as the Irish were one of the city's high scorers both on offense as well as giv- ing away buckets. 89 Senior hoopsters spark varsity RAY SADLEY Forward JOHN ZAMPINO Guard FRANK KREMBLAS Forward JACK MALLOY Center GENE IACOMINI Guard 90 4 Bowling unites girls in fun Alley oop! With but one year of trial, the Irish plan to take a meet or two ,this season to outshine the defunct base- ball team that folded through lack of victories two years ago. Whether the tracksters can stage a successful campaign or not should be determined somewhat this year. This Irish aggregation of golfers - Willard Maloy, Dennis Shaul, Bob Mead- ows, and Mike Gill gauge iron accuracy for the '55 fairway season. Every year the Irish Club sprays the fairlanes with some of the finest control of the golf ball in the area. Buchtel is the prime op- ponent to the acquisition of the title, but with this four- some, the Irish should track down the championship. Four for a fore! What a racket! The tennis title supplies a rough goal for the Irish courtmen: Steve Kraus, Dick Roesch, and Joe Szir- aky. The racket- appears to be in tune, so the tennis team may check a winner.
