Upon reaching this milestone in the history of our state, we pause to review its past one hundred fifty years and our last year together. Our yearbook and our hearts belong to you. Help us to remain always loyal to our Christian ideals and civic heritage. Beg for us, from your Divine Son, the courage and strength to build worthily on the foundations laid by our Cod-fearing ancestors. We give the Shamrock to you as a promise of our dedication to your Immaculate Heart, and as a year-long work of praise and thanksgiving. ..5.. VISITS MOTHER CLARE - 6 - Um Ohh 764134 mm 14 Vantage 4750 FROM the vantage, point of one hundred fifty years we can evaluate the forces of culture, education, and leadership in Ohio. These forces have combined to pro- duce eloquent and iniluential statesmen, many institutions of higher learning, mag- niiicent churches and renowned educators. From this vantage point, likewise, we look to the future, our future in Ohio, our future as leaders, educators, and states- men. Thus we prepare at St. Vincent to take our place beside the pioneers of yes- terday and the trail blazers of tomorrow. CHARACTER, scholarship, leadership, and service are the requirements for entrance into the National Honor Society. Under the direction of president M. Reiter, the students plan the activities for the year. October found the members selling the Shamrocks for Friendship Day, proceeds were used to buy an American Hag. The society donated a CARE package as a'Christmas present, and N. H. S. members searched for acts for the Annual Talent Show in February. March saw seniors plunging into the General Aptitude Test. Members gave their help to the Alumni book, a record of the activities of St. V. Honor Society alumni. Oflicers in the club are vice-president L. Ball, secretary M. Kraus, and treasurer T. Fellinger and R. Metcalfe. Faculty sponsor is Sister Loretta. NDQNM H NS fer W F X if -15- ' 2 H .Z x b ,- - E . ,- . t , k,',s,, . s Hs, ,g. . ?,,- . ' Laurence Barr Larry St. Vincent . . . Elementary schools were established early in the history of our great state and promises of high schools followed in a short time. The universities of Ohio are ranked among the linest of the nation. Ohio University at Athens was a pioneer in higher learning in the Northwest Territory while Western Reserve University is known as the Yale of the West. Oberlin was the first coeducational college in the United States. Day by day we strive to meet this challenge in our classes. Courses in languages, sciences, mathematics, and social studies prepare us for our roles in keeping Ohio a leader in education. Patricia Grifa, Charles Gilbride, and Steve Dejacimo watched intently as Father Speight described the proper procedure for dressing the chalice for Mass. He then ex- plained the order in which the vestments are put on by the priest for Mass. Father also showed the students how the ciborium is pre- pared for the distribution of Holy Communion. The sophomores find that leaming about the symbolism of the vestments and the sacred vessels used in the Mass can be both challeng- ing and inspiring. The connection between the life of Christ and the sacrifice of the Mass is shown in the course offered to the sophomore class. Their motto Toward heaven together completes the theme of their study. Ann Walter, however, has that understanding look. The triangles must be congruent because two angles and a side of one equal two angles and a side of the other. Posting a record of seven wins, two losses and one dead- lock, the Irish proved themselves to be the pride of Akron. The Irish were truly a miracle team boasting only five lettermen to begin their rugged season. The boys were small and the team was green, but became more powerful and potent as the season rolled on. Falling under the spirited green and white were Kenmore, Ravenna, Canton Central, West, Buchtel, St. Mary, and Cuyahoga Falls. The team was set back only twice, once by the public school champion, East, early in the sea- ..50- son, and once more with an injury riddled team by the Central Wildcats. The educated toe of Martin Testa after the touchdown by Chuck Pfeil was only enough to tie the score against the highly-rated Barberton Magics. Spearhead- ing the Irish attack throughout the autumn activities were John Costello, Ronnie D'Alessio, Carl Gessler, Adeb Haddad, Dave McKoski, ferry Myers, Tom Baldacci, Bill Curley, Lenny Gmerek, jack Mars, jerry Maurer, Chuck Rey- mann, and Eddie Taggart. Credit is due the rest of the team and a salute to the followers for their moral support. 'To the senior members of the varsity, congratulations and thanks are in order in bringing the parochial championship, and the best won-lost record in the district to the school in many years. . .. .. St. V. proved to be too much for the battling Catholics from Canton as the Irish won 20-0. Spotting the Wildcats 13 points, Irish defense was penetrated for 19 points by Central. A potent Irish thrust the St. Mary team to defeat for the fifth year by a score of 13-7. Surprise proved to be the deciding factor against the Falls as the Irish won 27-14. Throughout the season they stood by the true meaning of athletics at St. Vincent, by spirited play, and the ability to take defeat graciously. The great- est disappointment to the hoopsters was given them by St. Mary who took the team on both schools' floors. The season was not all gloom, however, for victories were scored over East, Kent Roosevelt, Warren Harding, Hower, and West. The most impressive contest of the season was played against the potent Garfield Presidents. The game was lost in overtime, but the green and white exhibited their poten- tial ability for the future against the team that did not taste loss once during season play. Special recognition is due Jack Mars, who scored forty-two points for a school, city, .. .. and district individual scoring record. This accomplishment proved helpful in his selec- tion to the all city second team. His continued progress throughout the season and expert play on the backboards was a hemendous assistance to the green team. It was only fitting that this was climaxed by his individual effort in the last game in history against the West Cavaliers. The senior class was repre- sented by few in number but the three cagers -Cletus Young, Adeb Haddad, and Mike Sulli- van-made up for it in spirit. Note must also be taken of the progress and spark shown by sophomore, Ray Sadley, who dumped in more than twenty points in each of two games and secured a place on the all city third team. junior, Ronnie Vargo, proved to be an up and coming star as he fought his way to a first place berth. Mean- while, Mama Claus seems to be beckoning the late comers to join the fun. The juniors chose this duplication of the decorations at the Rockefeller Center in New York as the centerpiece for the annual formal. Mrs. Claus' heavily-laden sleigh is drawn by multi-colored peacocks with angel-hair fans and plumes. The dark background of evergreens make a sharp contrast against the carpet of snow and the dresses of the dancers. -80- . . ..
