Everyone is hastening to reap the fruits of the vineyards and orchards. All are occupied in a last burst of energy, speeding up summer's more leisurely pace. Bordering much of this scene, a fieldstone wall watches another harvest. Built over a hundred years ago, much of it remains today as a monument to the industry and sense of beauty of the pioneers who settled Napa Valley. lt travels along miles of scenic Napa and finally ends near neighboring Solano County, the home of Saint's. Autumn at Saint's also is a period of great activity, quite a change from summer's slower mood. lt is a season in which each student reaps the fruits of his labor, while en- joying the excitement of his new state in life. This season also includes the creation of new things: football teams, rallies, games, new classes, new friendships - all are a part of autumn. lust as the old stone wall looks upon a new harvest each autumn, so does the Spirit of Saint's, created by its first members, look upon this new school year as a harvest of l-lilltoppers gathered in unity to carry on in themselves that same Spirit of St. Vincent's, begun so long ago. In the north east, Travis Air Base hums with activity and it seems the air of brisk efficiency is carried on the winds to the I-lilltopg for rain or shine the Saint's activities continue. Everyone - well, almost everyone - becomes engrossed in language, science and history, punctuated by basketball, or a class play, or a choral presentation, and freguently all three. Still there are the holidays, to be followed by snow trips, class rings, and the new semester. This is the point of no return, when fresh- men and seniors alike contemplate past failures and tri- umphs and confidently start anew. Although our winters often resemble spring, often this past winter murky channel waters were blent with a somber sky, eliminating the horizon to create a monotone of ash. A blanketing mist enveloped the landscape and time re- versed itself till no longer we, but Padre Solano, beheld this solitude. This is the land of his convert, Chief Solano, and of General Vallejo. Time made memories of the first capitol. It immortalized the romance of Concepcion Arguello and the founding of our Dominican nuns in California. It whispers Suisun - West Wind. As the winter sun returns to pierce the haze, what shadows might we cast, armed as we are with Truth? Perhaps we too, will some day be part of Solano County's legends. or 1, 5' Patricia Desmond '58 X 4 x SOLANO COUNTY IN WINTER GRAY ' Michael Hines, president, Block SV . The academic life is represented by the student members of the choir, and those students who read lessons. The social is represented- by those members of the laity who, representing different groups, read lessons. The spiritual lite is represented by those members of the clergy who bring the offerings ot prayer and prayerful song to the feet of the Infant. Rosarians A religious organization for girls, the ROSAR- IANS aim to deepen the Faith loy encouraging religious practices, by giving an opportunity for Catholic Action and by spreading devotion to the Blessed Mother. One of the rnost successful of Rosarian projects this year was the Christmas party for young children, pictures of which appear on this page. is-CJ For some reason everyone gathered around the Christmas tree. After rolling over their first two opponents, San Rafael and Davis, the 1958 model of the St. Vincent's basketball machine became mired in a dismal seven-game losing streak. By mid-season the Saints were back in the right lane, splitting four games, 2 and 2. Then disaster struck in the form cf a contested 49448 loss to Rio Vista in the league opener. But suddenly Coach Mike Diaz' Hilltop crew shifted to high gear and steam rollered six of their last seven op- ponents. By blasting Rio in the return match 53-44, the varsity took the last SCAL flag to be awarded and con- cluded a season that had its bumps but ended smoothly. WE OPPONENT THEY 48 ....... .,... Thus came the name Mt. Diablo - Devil Mountain - tor the Spaniards agreed that only a Satanical power could vanquish their mighty army. Through the centuries, the spirit of Devil Mountain has been tamed and put to work by the people of Contra Costa County. Today he inspires his people to great deeds: building super-highways, planting sweeping orchards and farms, constructing wondrous refineries and smelters. As the people through the decades have harnessed the power oi the devil oi the mountain, so through the school year St. Vincent's molds the spirit oi its students. By spring all the eitorts oi the year blossom forth into the greatest achievements ot the students in all phases oi their school lite. This spirit will carry the soon-to-be alumni on in lite and will inspire the underclassmen to greater achieve- ments in the years to come on our Hilltop. Drawn from many backgrounds in our guest for religious education, we stood together, a little wary, but with eager anticipation. Then we spent the next four years growing and learning together. We became even closer, within the common bond of our class. We worked, played, and prayed to- gether, learning forbearance and unity and the Christian way, along with our Latin and algebra. Today we stand together for the last time, again at the threshold of a new experience, but this is one we will go alone. Scattered again, more widely than our diversified backgrounds, we will travel far from Saint Vincent's. Per- haps at times we will almost forget. But still, in the backs of our minds and deep in our hearts, will be the memory of the Hilltop. lt has shaped our minds and entrenched our Faith. lt has strengthened our ideals. lt has prepared us to face the world as strong Christian citizens. lt will remain a part of us always. Now, for the last time, the door we have entered so often swings shut behind us. Summer, like the future, shines ahead. Ellen Riley '58 SEALBEARERS C.S.F.
