With construction of the milllon dollar men's dormltory under way, The Unlverslty of Detroit ls another step closer to its dream campus . A 515900 OOO self llquldattng loan by the Houslng and Home Flnance Agency being used for con structlon will be paid back by student rent over a forty year period Furnishings and fees lnclden tial to Its construction will cost S269 OOO brlng ing the total cost to S1 169000 ln granting the loan to The University of Detrolt the agency gave two reasons for its approval 1 The two ROTC unlts could be expanded sub stantlally It additional housmg facilltles were avallable 2 The University has expanded its facllltles for tralnlng students ln fields important to the defense ettort lncludlng englneerlng physics chemlstry dentistry and teacher educatlon Negotlatlons for the new bulldlng took about ten months Before bemg granted the loan the Uni versity had to prove the need for the bulldmg and to establish that the money was unavailable In Detrolt The new dormitory being constructed adlacent to Holden Hall will have 156 study bedrooms hous mg 316 out of town students, recreatlon rooms a chapel and lounges Since approximately one quarter of U of Ds students are from out of town the llmlted housing facilities permlt the Unlverslty to operate at only 75 per cent of Its capacity The new dormitory wlll help to Increase this percentage Father Steiner turns the first spadeful of sod for the new dormitory In ceremonies at the site on Friday Aprll 23rd ln attendance left to rlght Mr HenryJ Brennan President of the W E Wood Co general contractors Rev John Francis Quinn SJ Rector of The Unlversnty of Detrolt Mr Edward C Roney Board of Directors Alumnl Assocla tlon Rev Celest1nJ Steiner SJ President of The Unlverslty of Detrolt Mr J A Berkowskl Reglstrar of The Unlverslty of Detrolt Rev Hugh F Smith SJ Vlce President of The Unlverslty of Detrolt Mr Nwosu N Ukegbu Nlgerla representing the foreign students at the Unlverslty of Detrolt The Second Dormitory on U of D Campus Ground Broken Aprll 23rd 1954 To be completed In 1955 1 ' ' I .
