Darkness calls a halt to practice and the weary men file, into the locker room . . . tired but happy. A locker-room door fails to completely stifle the murmuring from the stands as the players don their uniforms. Heads are bowed and the most vital act of preparation floats through the transom .... Just eleven men on the field, thou- sands more in the stands. During the 1953 football campaign, the spirit shown by students was equalled only by the effort expended by the team. Upon arriving home after capturing the co-championship of the Missouri Valley Conference, the victorious team was met by throngs of U. of D. students. Members of the Student Union and the Varsity News staff were co-sponsors of the Welcoming Committee. This kind of initiative has served as a major incentive to our champions of '53,
