The years between entry into the Academy as a nervous freshman and exit as a confident, powerful senior are probably the most formative in one’s life in terms of physical, mental and moral growth, bach year, the typical cadet changes a little bit, until upon graduation the line of seniors bears little resemblance to the group of cowed freshman who first walked in four years be- fore, or even to the group of wise-guy juniors they were one year before. This yearbook, the 1973 Kaydet, is an attempt to chronicle one of those years of metamor- phosis. Those of us on the staff would like to express our hope that this volume will, in years to come, serve as a reminder of the things we, the Class of 1973, expe- rienced during our last year here. When the time to select the recipient of the yearbook dedication comes, the members of the senior class are faced with an almost impossible task. However, each year there is one individual who has given a little more than usual in influencing the student body, particularly the seniors. It is difficult to epitomize the reason behind the choice, but in our minds the one overwhelming reason this year was the recipient's success in handling his various tasks with so little fuss or publicity that most students don't even realize the many things he accomplishes. The Senior Class of 1973 is proud to dedicate this yearbook to such a man- MR. WILLIAM J. RIDLEY Headmaster, counselor, and, most important, friend. Anyone who has seen the interest Mr. Ridley takes in the accomplishments of the students can testify that his deep concern for their best welfare is always readily apparent. His enthusiastic support of the various activities, competitive and non-com- petitive, is an important part of their success. From the beginning of the day, with his acerbic com- ments at morning formation, to its close, Mr. Ridley is always readily available to the student body. Yet these things, important as they are to the cadet corps, are a relatively insignificant portion of Mr. Ridley’s work. He is the man who must approve curriculum changes, and then conciliate parents as well as students who feel their creativity is being stilled. He must convince the Board of Trustees that the school is following the right course, and keep them supporting Saint Thomas. He is the man who is ultimately responsible for keeping the Academy a viable, ever-growing institution. In a phrase, Mr. Ridley is “where the buck stops,” and he does his work very well. 5
