The years between entry into the Academy as a nervous freshman and exit as a confident, powerful senior are probably the most formative in one’s life in terms of physical, mental and moral growth, bach year, the typical cadet changes a little bit, until upon graduation the line of seniors bears little resemblance to the group of cowed freshman who first walked in four years be- fore, or even to the group of wise-guy juniors they were one year before. This yearbook, the 1973 Kaydet, is an attempt to chronicle one of those years of metamor- phosis. Those of us on the staff would like to express our hope that this volume will, in years to come, serve as a reminder of the things we, the Class of 1973, expe- rienced during our last year here. The Kaydet staff. When the time to select the recipient of the yearbook dedication comes, the members of the senior class are faced with an almost impossible task. However, each year there is one individual who has given a little more than usual in influencing the student body, particularly the seniors. It is difficult to epitomize the reason behind the choice, but in our minds the one overwhelming reason this year was the recipient's success in handling his various tasks with so little fuss or publicity that most students don't even realize the many things he accomplishes. The Senior Class of 1973 is proud to dedicate this yearbook to such a man- MR. WILLIAM J. RIDLEY Headmaster, counselor, and, most important, friend. Anyone who has seen the interest Mr. Ridley takes in the accomplishments of the students can testify that his deep concern for their best welfare is always readily apparent. His enthusiastic support of the various activities, competitive and non-com- petitive, is an important part of their success. From the beginning of the day, with his acerbic com- ments at morning formation, to its close, Mr. Ridley is always readily available to the student body. Yet these things, important as they are to the cadet corps, are a relatively insignificant portion of Mr. Ridley’s work. He is the man who must approve curriculum changes, and then conciliate parents as well as students who feel their creativity is being stilled. He must convince the Board of Trustees that the school is following the right course, and keep them supporting Saint Thomas. He is the man who is ultimately responsible for keeping the Academy a viable, ever-growing institution. In a phrase, Mr. Ridley is “where the buck stops,” and he does his work very well. 5 The Most Reverend Leo Bin Archbishop The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis 6 ALUMNI BOARD Ol DIRECTORS: First How: J.Gicfcr 41. Be- low: While Mr. Ridley reminisces about the last four years, a tear comes to his eye. as he contemplates the difficulty of replacing the illustrious class of grad- uating seniors. ADMIN One of the many factors contributing to the sue St. Thomas has enjoyed in the last few years is an ceptionally able Administration. The immense amc of work that these devoted men expend to ensure smooth, efficient running of the school is vital to continued existence of S.T.A. In his second year as Headmaster, Mr. Will Ridley has continued to exhibit the tact and int gence that made him eligible to become the first Headmaster in the Academy’s history. From his d witty announcements at morning formation to enthusiastic support of all extra-curricular activi “Rids is an integral part of life at St. Thomas. Mr. William Culbertson, besides his duties as te; er, coach and moderator of the Student Coui The student body at a typical morning formation. 8 Left: Wonderfully Wally. beloved yearbook moderator, reacts to the appointment of Tom Clements as Faculty Section Editor with the immortal words “You've got to be kidding! Despite being the “Bad Guy” who has to orce the rules, regulations and appearance code, ulby” remains friends with the overwhelming major- of the student body. VIr. He is also the derator of the Academy's superb, prize-winning irbook. -ather John Seifert, Director of Guidance, adrnin- :rs the Academy's excellent testing program and insels seniors as to college choices in addition to ching Religion. Why can't I go to MacDonald's for lunch? FACULTY AND ACADEMICS An institution of higher education can no more survive without a competent, dedicated faculty than it can without students. Fortunately, St. Thomas is in little danger of disappearing for this reason. One of the best-qualified groups of teachers in the state makes the Academy a widely respected secondary school which places 97% of its grad- uates in various colleges. This can be said about few other schools, but there is something that makes St. Thomas faculty unique: their willingness to help. From assisting a student with a difficult math problem to coaching ath- letic teams to chaperoning bus trips, or simply talking to students in the halls, the faculty is always readily acces- sible and enthusiastically involved in all aspects of life at the Academy. During a time when the “generation gap” is supposedly widening, the ties between teachers and stu- dents at S.T.A. are instead growing stronger. There is probably no senior who has been here four years who can truthfully claim not to have been deeply influenced by at least one member of the faculty. It is this bond between students and faculty, almost unheard of on the high school level, and none too common in the colleges, that is the sin- gle most important factor in making St. Thomas what it is. Although the yearbook is dedicated to a specific indi- vidual each year, it is in a larger sense dedicated to the entire faculty, for they have made the student body what it is. 10 ARTHUR J. Sister Mary Middlcschool. SIR! The Middle School, entering into its second year of existence, has become a firmly-established segment of the St. Thomas community. The seventh and eighth graders provide a seasoning of freshmen who know the ropes” each year and can assist their often befuddled new classmates, which alone would justify the Middle School's existence. The Middle Schoolers are receiving one of the best junior high educations in the area from an excellent, well-qualified staff. In addition, the rela- tively small si .c of classes allows each student to participate in all factors of school life, from their own school government (totally independent of the high school student council) to the doughnut sales so eagerly anticipated by the remainder of the student body. There is every probability that the Middle Schoolers will continue to demonstrate the qualities that have made them an asset to the Academy, both now and for the rest of the time they spend at St. Thomas. roiseo lor action.' Freshman year is always a time of uncertainty, of searching f what one will become; and this year's class is no exception. Dcspi the confusion, however, the freshmen have already accomplish much and show promise for the future. They have settled into t academic routine, formed new friendships, both with other fro: and upperclassmen, begun to participate in the myriad activiti that St. Thomas has to offer, and. most important, continued carry on and improve on the STA tradition of success, as can seen from their undefeated football record, to mention only o thing. Despite having three years to go before graduation, t frosh already show the hallmarks of Tommies. I.e l: Freshmen arc taught to keep neat lockers. Below: Poetry in motion. The Sophomore class this year has continued to demon- strate the talent and responsibility that made them so re- spected last year as freshmen. In academics, athletics and every other extra-curricular activity, the sophomores are distinguishing themselves and their class. Their Student Council members have been some of the most active, re- sponsible members of that organization; their B-squad athletic teams have enjoyed great success, and many mem- bers of their class have already made the jump to varsity athletics. As the sophomores continue to grow and mature, their remaining years should be memorable. Junior year is an important time, for besides carrying a heav academic load, the student more actively participates in the various student functions. This participation will enable the members of the class to fulfill the various leadership roles in their Senior year. This is a time of “unsure steps” but the responsibility the Juniors under- take will yield a more rewarding experience for them, and sharing common occurrences with each other will produce a feeling of good fellowship. The remainder of the student body recognizes the po- tential of the Junior class and wishes them the best of luck in the remainder of their career at the Academy. 43 Kevin Abbott Paul Anderson Gary Armstead Joseph Bann William Bann James Bard Dennis Bassett John Bichsel Wilfred Boyne Herbert Bruber Timothy Carroll Daniel Cem insky David Chlcbcck Frank Countryman David Combs Andrew Cragg 44 John Gcisler John Haggerty tom as Hcimcl William Germann Brute Goad Glen Goemer Gregory Gust Timothy Hannasc! They earned a 7-1 record with a small, quick team, suffering their only defeat at the hands of the eventual Conference Champions, Rochester l.ourdes. The Tommy offense, paced by four All-Conference selections, unleashed a pow- erful ground game as well as a deadly aerial attack which accounted for 763 yards and 8 touchdowns. The all-senior offensive line, despite being one of the smallest in the conference, consistently outplayed its opponents. The predominantly junior defense also enjoyed success, recording 3 shutouts and allowing only 69 points in 8 games. The defense placed one player on the All-Conference squad, as well as an All-Conference Honorable Men- tion. A band does not usually undergo any radical changes from one year to the next, but in order to have a successful season a high level of musicianship must be maintained. First of all. tryouts were altered drastically. With only two days of “hazing, none of which was done in front of the student body, the number of people who tried out more than doubled. Because of this, a better cross-section of students was picked. The Crack Squad, as it has been for the past thirty- six years, is a student-run organization, entertaining at area social functions and schools. The Squad per- formed before large audiences at both the Met Sports Center and the St. Paul Civic Center. Mr. Michael McKasy has been apppointed moderator of the Squad, and he is a most welcome addition. The Squad of today represents something dif- ferent to each person, but no matter what the rep- resentation. in its performances the Squad offers the beauty of order and precision which will never go out of fashion. Entertainment was and still is the purpose of the Crack Drill Squad. My cummerbund is killing me! First Row: M.McGroarty (Commander). B.Murphy (Lt. Cmdr.). Second Row: K.Theiscn. B.Bradford. The Student Council has been an integral part of the successful year at the Academy. The Council’s responsibil- ities arc varied, ranging from sponsoring the various social events during the year (and providing the workers to run them and clean up afterwards) to making suggestions to the au- thorities for changes in scheduling or curriculum. This year’s Council has carried out these duties exceptionally well. It contributed money to several charities, planned and execu- ted social events ranging from the Reg down to mixers an bus trips successfully, and made several recommendatior to the adminsistration, some of which were accepted an some of which may be acted on in the future. The Council major triumphs were probably the purchase of the popcor machine, that provider of many mouthfuls of munchy mo scls, and the low cost of Reg tickets. One of the most important duties of the typical Councilman is the sale of concessions at varioi times to the slavering hordes. Ticket-taking at a busy mixer drives the strongest men over the edge. Most of the leadership of this year's Council came from the ten sterling senior officers. Basketball Playe Captain Bill Malchow was the team’s leader all year, turning in consis- tent performances that placed him near the top of the team in points and rebounds for every game. Because of their lack of height, the Tommies were forced to rely on speed and hustle for their advantages. The members of the squad put so much effort into the game that they were always in contention, even against op- ponents with an apparently insurmountable advantage in height. The team’s desire was enough to earn them third place in the conference during the regular season, and to defeat Cretin in an down-to-thc-wire game that gave the Cadets the Region title and entrance to the State Tourna- ment. In the first round, the team drew tournament favor- ite Rochester Lourdes. Despite two previous losses to Lourdes, the Tommies fought hard and had control of the ball with 30 seconds left and only a one-point deficit, but were defeated by a pair of free throws. It is perhaps the most fitting tribute to this year's basketball team to say that despite a number of such heart-breaking losses, they never quit. The 1972-73 basketball team started the season favored to wind up on the losing end of nearly every game it was scheduled to play. With no returning starters and only one player over 6 feet tall, the Cadets’ prospects were poor. However, first year Coach John Hermes was able to guide the team to a respectable 11-13 record against some extremely strong competition, and many of the team’s losses were by only a few points. Despite scheduling problems that had the team play back-to-back games after being idle for a week, and play a game crucial to their conference standing the day after Reg, the team finished third in the conference, only a few close games out of second. In the Regions, they faced a Cretin team they had defeated earlier in the year, only to have a fired-up group of Raiders end the team’s season by defeating it. Under the inspirational leadership of Coach I red Brown, the team often played far better than anyone expected them to. A respectable 98 goals were scored against the oppositu many of which were made by defensive players zealou following the coach's advice to do “yeoman's duty . A fi ther factor in the team’s success was the switch from Aldri Arena to the more accessible SPA facilities, thus allowi increased fan support which was a crucial factor in ma close games. However, the team managed to shake off its disappointing start and compile a respect- able 7-6 record against the best private school teams in the state. As the season went on, the team’s hopes for the future were bright- ened by the creation of a Middle School farm team and by the fact that many of this year's best swimmers were underclassmen who will be returning next year. However, t eventual selection pleased everyone, and that is an exce tion! Michael MeGroarty, the Cadet Colonel for 1973, universally accepted as having fulfilled the requirement “all-around excellence” and participation in all aspects life at St. Thomas. He is an outstanding student, and actively involved in many different extra-curricular acti ties, as well as starting in two sports and finding time for lively social schedule. This participation in itself places Mil among the elite, and the effort he puts into all of his acti ties and the excellence he exhibits at them make him one the outstanding individuals of the class of '73. However, sheer participation, no matter how well don isn't enough to secure the Colonelcy. The primary requir ment is leadership, and Mike has demonstrated this mat times, both on an individual and on a group basis. What more, he was able to do so without alienating his fellow sti dents, as his elections to the Student Council twice, to c captain of the track team and to commander of the Crac Squad demonstrate. The seniors performed their final military review and irncd over command of the Brigade to the junior of- cers during the Senior Review ceremonies which pre- ;ded the Military Ball. The music of Purple Haze was interruped for an ex- sllent performance by the Crack Drill Squad, a drill hich convinced all the guests of the precision and inno- ation of the 72-’73 Squad and set the tone'for the an- ouncement of next year's Squad leadership, given to homas Kelly. From the formality of the Grand March to the lack of :striction characterized by cadets and their dates leaving r entering the building as they pleased, a broad enough jeetrum of interests was covered to provide everyone ith a source of enjoyment and a truly memorable celc- ration. After the Ball the official senior party was held at the jmewhat unelegant Purple Barn. The event lasted until 00 a.m., when the band. “Smokescreen,” ended its erformance for the 1973 Senior Class Party. James Daubncy receives another military award. Kelly takes command of the Crack Squad. 153 “Mature” Seniors Hea Guest Fr. Leo Dolan spoke at graduation exercises, Me dealt with Christ's involvement in a troubled world. The Archbishop receives his diploma from Mike Abbott. Cadets approach the platform in style. Everyone received his diploma. “Come back with my gal.' 154 )ut for the Big World Flag is blessed following Baccalaureate Mass. In his beginning comments as graduation speaker. Father Leo Dolan, former Guidance Counselor at the Academy, mentioned that he would keep his message relatively brief so that the sen- iors would remember just what he had said. But the Class of '73 will remember Fr. Dolan’s main idea: the fact that society is quite cruel, and that the academic and moral education received at the Academy can be one of the primary sources for making decisions in this environment. Graduation from high school does, for most students, bring to the surface many nostalic memories of an experience which can never be relived. This ceremony marks the end of one phase of life and the beginning of another; yet, as Father Dolan said in his remarks, this new life is only a continuation of the past. The annual Baccalaureate Mass and luncheon, which initiated proceedings on Friday of Graduation, served as an effective emotional buffer, preparing the seniors for the commencement program which lay ahead. After the seniors and their guests assembled in the school gym- nasium for commencement, Paul Vincent made his last remarks as senior class president. Diplomas and awards were conferred following Fr. Dolan’s address. Archbishop Leo Byrne made a few closing remarks. Refreshments were then served in the Student Union. The emancipated seniors may now note (with a certain degree of incredulity, it is suspected) that they arc full-fledged members of the St. Thomas Academy Alumni Association, and are entitled to an almost unprecedented royal treatment whenever they again set foot inside their beloved Alma Mater.
