The Men When the class of 72 came to STA four years ago, Mr. Ridley was the assistant headmaster. Now as seniors we look up to him as the su- perintendent of our school. In the four short years that we have been here, Mr. Ridley be- came the first layman to be superintendent of STA in its proud 86 year history. Mr. Ridley is a part of the school day for the student body. Many school days are preceded by his humor and enthusiasm at morning for- mation. Rids is seen throughout the day talking and rail-hanging with students. He is also one of the top supporters of our sport teams and is always seen in the stands cheering them on. 8 on Top In four years Mr. Culbertson has ad- vanced from history teacher to Director of Students. Culby is the Moderator of the Student Council and is involved in most student activities. It took the students four years, but we finally convinced him that crewcuts are out. Father Siefert is the Director of Guidence at STA. He helps seniors decide on a college which will give them what they are looking for. He is thought of by the stu- dents as the guy who directs those big tests. When seen in school he always has a stack of tests with him. When seen outside he always has his dog Tashe with him. Mr. Kurtz is director of Development, Alumni, and Public Relations. This is a full time job for him and he does it well. He is a good spokesman for the school and he works hard with the alumni. Whenever seen in the halls he always has a smile on his face. When pale green Jaded into gold and red- green blood rushed out and transfused a verdant life into the fallen leaf academics % RALPH C. However, the Council, when the need arises, can be the student's voice in school politics. Also, it has the duty of inter-school relations. The social activities of the school are almost totally planned and run by the members of the Student Coun- cil. The activities run from planning mixers and major dances to running bus trips to Rochester and to dunk- ing Major Shippey. Included with the routine activi- ties of planning is the work on some of the more ob- scure facets of the school, school spirit and the general attitude of the student body. In 71-72, the S.C. at- tempted to work on this by making the student body aware of many of the not-so-well attended areas of the school. Examples of this were selling tickets to St. Thomas's excellent plays, making the schedules of sports such as swimming and wrestling common knowledge, and conducting noontime activities like the ping-pong tournament. The political aspect of the Council isn't as important as it once was. However, if presented with a school problem which has not been covered by the Student- Faculty Advisory, Board, the S.C. has the authority to handle the situation. During excitement of the night, the two Colonels meet face to neck and discuss some pressing problems. Cadet Colonel: John L. Sullivan This year the prominent position of Cadet Colonel was bestowed on one of the Senior Class' most distinguished leaders: John L. Sullivan. For Sully, the Colonel- cy marked the culmination of four years of excellence in academics, athletics, dramatics, forensics, and innumerable other activities. In a short, dignified ceremony, Head- master William Ridley presented the new colonel with the Fleming Sabre, symbol of leadership at the Academy, and then stepped back as John's well-wishers gather- ed round him and led him to the showers and a convenient snow- bank, congratulating their new colonel all the while. But we are experienced from the past. And have blossomed into maturity. The year has alot in store. But we can move more freely. The snows that caused uneasy steps. Have slowly melted into streams. From a barren land of desolate sand, A molded tree of trust— The roots so firm begin to squirm, In sight of leaves that rust. But through these years. Too old to fear. The days that lie ahead— Our branches high reach out to sigh, So quick, so fast, we're fed! To open this lock. This bark of rock— to leave the forest behind— That barren land. The dormitory policy this year was a nonmilitary one; how- ever, neatness and order in the dorms was maintained through the efforts of the deans and the student leaders. Because of the small- er number of boarders and the relaxed sys- tem, living conditions in the dorms were com- fortable. This year the boarders were able to do more things as a group than they have in the past. Mr. Johnson, who is a new teacher at the school, was the assistant dean in the dormito- ry. He was conscientious, understanding, and he worked very hard to help make the dorms a better place to live. The boarders wish to thank Mr. Johnson for his concern and efforts. We would also like to thank Larry Lasswell, who was the activities dean for the past year. Although he was a student at St. Thomas Col- lege, he was around a lot during the week and especially weekends to open the gym and pool for the boarders. This year was Mr. Rongitsch's last year in the dorms. He has been dean in the dormito- ries for the last three years. In his three years at the dorms, Mr. Rongitsch has experienced a lot of things which most people haven't ...and was able to maintain his sanity. The boarders will never be able to thank Mr. Rongitsch enough for his deep concern in boarder life. His many efforts to improve boarder life stem all the way from change to a better dorm policy to change for a dollar when a boarder gets hungry. The Seniors offer a special thanks to the members of the faculty and administration who showed their interest in boarder affairs during our stay at the Academy. Beethoven takes a time out while Mr. Rongitsch helps out Pete King. John Gillespie does what he's best at. Boarders make good use of their after-school time. You really went out with the phantom? The Class of 1972 Dedication All students seem to have a special respect for a particular teacher. When that teacher happens to teach English, the students will soon realize that English teachers, too, have their favorite authors. So we of the KAYDET staff have decided that it would be proper to use the words of a celebrated author to describe a special man at the Academy: His life was gentle, and the elements so mix'd in him that Nature might stand up And say to all the world, 'This was a man! ' We feel that he is a man, a friend, a scholar, and a quick-wit. Again, in the words of the same author: He has done nobly, and cannot go without any honest man's voice. .. . The gods give him joy, and make him good friend to the people! Therefore, we, the people of St. Thomas Academy, have proudly chosen the words of William Shakespeare to describe our special teach- er. Thus we dedicate the 1972 KAYDET to MR. JAMES KEANE. 139 Who's Who in the Class of 1972 Cadet Colonel .......... Student Council President Senior Class President .. . Kaydet Editor........... Dave Sherlock demonstrates the extreme thoroughness of his military training by answering Colonel French's probing inter- rogations in his sleep. Such versatility enabled St. Thomas to retain it's honor rating for the 27th year. Middle schoolers look forward to the day when they too, can participate in such exciting activities. Mil—May 25,26,27,... Now, what did she mean by 'Only your best friends will tell you'? Graduation 1972—the End Well, what'll it be; basketball at the U., bas- ketball at Notre Dame, basketball at On May 26, 1972, the Academy's 87th class of grad- uating seniors made the march and performed the ceremonies that have become tradition. They were presented with their diplomas, signifying four years of efforts and loafing, victories and defeat, good times and bad times. In the years to come, those diplomas may be superseded by other honors, but on this day they meant something very special. As the seniors sat and watched the presentation of awards, heard the lists of honors, participated in the sometimes arcane pomp and circumstance surrounding their entry into the real world and threw their hats in the air to mark the conclusion of their careers as cadets with com- mendable enthusiasm, the objective observer could detect a note of nostalgia in even the most eager sen- ior. The Academy had been the central factor of their existence for the past four years, and, whether for good or evil, had shaped them and their future. From past performance, one would think favorably of the seniors' prospects, and their success is a consum- mation devoutly to be wished. The best wishes of those who remain go with this, the Class of '72. Aw shucks. Fantastic skill, incredible versatility, and above all, dignity.” High School Bowl, Table Tennis Teams Take State Dave Cochrane attempts to look intelligent as teammates Ed Ryan (Captain), Joe Encyclopedia Andersen and Sean Quick-draw Deviti im- plore Cod for guidance. Under the able coaching of the Rev. Gordon Flash Doffing, the team compiled an enviable -1-0 record to secure St. Thomas' first State Championship in the event. The Tommies walked on Sibley in the first round, breezed over Benilde in the next match, defeated Shattuck via a second-period rally, and scored a stunning upset over heavily-favored Breck to secure the State Championship. One of the many factors contributing to the team's success was an exceptionally able bench, led by Jim Hot-Dog Daubney. The Table Tennis team, competing for the first year, posted a 15-1 record on its way to the State Champion- ship. The squad also placed three members on the All-State team.
