'r) Est 1921) I’ U B LIS H E I) B Y St. Thomas Military Academy Saint Paul, Minnesota 1946 TO THOSE WHO GAVE ALL THEY HAD EVEN THEIR LIVES —- BE- CAUSE THEY LOVED THEIR COUNTRY Many of the men who left St. Thomas to defend our country in the recent war were forced to endure privations and to risk their lives for her sake. They were glad to suffer these things for the end they had in view— freedom for their country and her allies, their country that guaranteed them liberty, dignity, and happiness. Many of them did lose their lives as witnesses to their country’s love of justice. Their families' sorrow is great and many mourn their deaths. What comfort is there for these families? Only in the belief we share—that to the faithful, life is changed, not taken away, and when this earthly dwell- ing is dissolved, an eternal home is prepared in heaven. 3 Foreword A few years front now before a roar- ing fire or in a dim attic, a man will pick up a purple-covered book, and paging through it,touch old memories and relive old times. IIe will be warm- ed by past joys and softened by past sor- row's, strengthened by past trials and heartened by past triumphs. It is to this one end that the following pages por- tray personalities and occurrences at St. Thomas during the year 1045-46. 5 Campus Views The Oldest Section of the Campus 6 7'he Administration Building The Armory () 'Sh a u gh nessy 11 dll he CImpel CONTENTS Classes Seniors • • • Page 11 Juniors • • • Page 40 Sophomores . . . . . . page 44 Freshmen .... . . . page 48 Administration . . . . . page 53 Studies . . . page 59 Military . . . page 65 Religion • • • Page 79 Athletics . . . page 83 Boarders . . . page 95 Activities .... . . . page 99 10 I SENIORS GRADUATION MESSAGE Roger Foussard, Senior Class President We are now at the end of four wonderful years at Saint Thomas. In these years we have been able to enjoy the fine friendship of the priests and members of the faculty. By their example and teaching we are now better prepared to face the future. For these things we sin- cerely thank them. It is our privilege to welcome the members of this year’s Junior class who will become next year’s Sen- iors. We have enjoyed their com- panionship and we know they will carry on the fine traditions of the school. We wish them success and take pleasure in passing to them the Senior saber, which is their emblem of leadership. ROGER P. We cannot show the acts of virtue which should accompany that adoration, but we hope that the vir- tues which worship inspires will be evident in the lives of the graduates of St. Thomas. Father Dooley gives Holy Communion at morning Mass. 80 All cadets attend Benediction every Friday. Many cadets serve daily Mass. Mass is celebrated for all boarders four times a week. 81 Cadets arc encouraged to offer Mass with the priest by using a missal. Bishop Trcacy speaks on St. Thomas Day. Father Vashro, Archbishop Murray, and Father Gormlcy enter the chapel on St. Thomas Diay, March 7th. 82 Athletics 'pMt all With only three lettermen as a foundation, Coach Dcig built up his fourth straight championship team (St. Thomas and Cretin ended up a tie for the championship this year). Although there was much pessimism about the team’s chances for a successful season at the beginning of the fall practice, the first two games (which were non-conference) showed that the team had the stuff to come through with another championship. Altogether, the team won six games, tied one. and lost one, scoring 120 points to the opponents’ 51. When the All-Conference team was picked, three Toms, McPharlin, Rademachcr, and Landmark, captured positions. MR. FR WCIS J. DEIG. Coach first Row: V. l.anc. I.. Cortcau. J. Conroy. J. 'I lie only score was made by the Cadets after they recov- ered a Trainer fumble. Even though each team was practically untried, they lacked none of the traditional intestinal fortitude of the game as was shown when a hard tackle broke the ankle of a Trainer half-back. ST. PAUL ACADEMY The two points after a touchdown cinched the game for the Tommies as the SPA team muffed theirs. They excelled themselves, however, in proving to be the first team to score against the Cadets on their home field since it was construct- ed back in the ’30’s. Repeated long runs were the brunt of the Tom's attack, keeping SPA on the defensive most of the second half. SPA. however, by a 70 yard run, made their final score two minutes before the gun, bettering a Tommie run early in the game. ST. CLOUD Held scoreless during the first half by the de- termined but outclassed St. Cloud team, the Cadets came out on the field after half time and pushed the Crusaders under their goal posts once during the third quarter and twice more in the fourth. Only once in the entire game was the Tom goal line threatened; that was in the first quarter when, after receiving the kick-off, the Q4 Cathedral team pushed up to the Tom three yard line only to lose the ball on downs. The Toms were unpleasantly surprised when they met the Islanders at Nicollet field, for this reportedly weak team not only held the Toms scoreless during the first quarter, but in the sec- ond period pushed the Cadets under their goal posts and then kicked for the extra point to lead the game 7-0. It was the Cadets turn next and they pushed across one touchdown before the end of the half, but because the kick for extra point missed, the Islanders still led the game. After half-time the Cadets moved on to the field de- termined to break ahead, and break they did. One touchdown and its extra point were scored to set the Toms out ahead 13-7. The rest of the game was played between the 30 yard stripes. CRETIN History repeated itself in the 24th annual con- test between Cretin’s Raiders and the Cadets as the game ended with the same 13-13 deadlock that climaxed the 1944 tilt. The Cadets were first to score when the Raiders fumbled the kick- off on their ten yard line. The kick for the extra point was not good. The Cadets got their next marker in the second quarter by way of a long pass. This time the kick was good. It was Cretin’s turn next and they also scored on a long pass, but the kick went wild. After the half the Raiders came back and scored again tying up the game. In the last quarter both teams fought desperately to score, but, being evenly matched, were stalemated at midfield. DULUTH CENTRAL The Cadets made the homecoming celebrations complete by defeating Duluth Central by an air attack. Both lines were evenly matched and for this reason the Cadets took advantage of their air power before the Northerners could find a defense against it. The men from Duluth caught on quickly and tightened their defense so that the Toms did not come near pay dirt again. In the third quarter the Northerners tried to even up the game but succeeded in getting only six points. ST. JOHN'S ACADEMY This game, which ended the 1945 football sea- son, is one about which as little as possible is said. The game started with the Cadets heavily favored since they outweighed the Johnnies by a considerable margin. During the first three quarters the Toms held their opponents score- less and scored two touchdowns, one in the sec- ond quarter and one in the third. Unfortunately the kicks for extra points were not good. Then when the fourth quarter started, the Johnnies got on their horse and. showing ability that was not present during the rest of the game, scored two touchdowns and one extra point. ST. AGNES Having sounded out the Aggies’ defense during the first quarter, the Cadets exploded into action in the second, scoring three touchdowns and two points after touchdown. Feeling safe in this lead, Coach Deig wisely substituted the entire second string in the second half. The scoring was held down to the one touchdown and point made in the third quarter. JSi This season has been one of success and heartbreak for the Academy basketball team—heartbreak because of the losses sustained, success shown by the well proven ability of the Cadet quint to work to- gether with sportsmanship and loyalty. Making up in spirit for what they lacked in stature, the Cadets gave all comers a tough fight for their money. Never stopped by the seeming hopelessness of the game, the Tommies played hard in the face of almost overwhelming odds, showing a spirit native to St. Thomas. By no means always on the short end of the scores, the Cadets well proved that all teams that came up against them would have to play hard to get by. Many games which kept the spectators tense as to the outcome rounded out a season which was rich in skill and knowledge gained. MR. All rooters were agreeably surprised to see the Toms hold the favored team to such a low score and then soundly whip Mechanic Arts, Washington, Wilson and Central High in that order. The season was completed in a series of games that were close enough to keep spectators on edge as to the outcome. Though some games were heartbreakers indeed, the Tommies proved an object lesson in loyalty and spirit. Again in a strange pool, the Tommie tankers held their starting success and defeated Blake 46 to 29. Swimming in the Tom pool two more opponents were chalked up: Min- neapolis West 51 to 24. and Murray 46 to 11. Cretin was again licked by our undefeated team to the tune of 47 to 28. St. Paul Central contributed to the Toms winning streak, the tallies reading 45 to 21. The cadet tankers suffered their first setback at the hands of a hard-fighting opponent, Shattuck. In unfriendly waters the Tommies gathered 18 points to Shattuck's 48. The Tommies ran into more difficulty, with Austin the State Champs proving too much for our team, and we were defeated 52 to 14. Blake came back to the G’Shaughncssy pool and was again defeated 41 to 25. Shattuck, our biggest rival, later came to our pool and, despite the efforts of veterans Markcrt and Kun ., high point men of the year, we were again handed a defeat 29 to 37. In the Invitational, Shattuck once again gained a slight margin over the cadets and took the trophy. Cochran showed up again as the outstanding diver winning honors in the Invitational. The other teams who participated in this year’s meet fell in line behind St. Thomas’ second place. Cretin was third, Blake fourth, and Pillsbury fifth. At the end of last year St. Thomas looked forward to a very successful season in '46 with several lcitermen returning. However, during the summer certain difficulties arose, and when this golf season rolled around, the coach. Father Vashro, was faced with the difficult problem of building a strong team with only two returning lettermen to serve as a nucleus. Despite this handicap the qualifying rounds were con- ducted with great enthusiasm and the top eight qualifiers formed the golf team of 46. The team scheduled 21 matches with the top teams in the Twin Cities and surrounding territory. The two lettermen of last year, Paul Stoner and Joe Conroy, arc expected to be the main threats to the opposition in these matches. Since there are six underclassmen on this year’s team the outlook for next year is very promising. Eleven members of last year’s team returned, thus providing a strong base for the team. 1 he outlook for the pitching staff scented very good with Nick Cody, Jerry McPharlin, Pat Egan. George Sciter, and Joe Sturdivant returning. The inheld also showed great promise with Tom Forster playing first. Pat McMahon at second, Eugene Hoy occupy- ing third and Nick Cody, when not pitching, play- ing shortstop. The outfield had only two returnees, Jim Frawlev and Bob Culligan, but Furcy found capable outfielders in Torn Burnstad and Joe Jen- sen. The catching problem was finally solved by Bob Hooper, who had proved himself a capable re- ceiver. Several teams in the State Catholic Confer- ence showed promise of giving the Toms a stiff and grueling race for the coveted title honors. Founded in 1V35 by Major Burton Hood, then Commandant, this unit had as its purpose the accurate execution of precision movements and manuals not prescribed by infantry drill regula- tions. Drill, however, is only one of the squad's essential characteristics. Civil War muskets, picturesque uniforms, and eleven years of tradition make this the school’s mast honored organization. I).
