Hickey, O.S.A., S.T.M., ll.C.D. Final evening of 1941 Mardi Gras. Left to right: Dr. Hickey, Mayor Charles Brown, ind Fr. John L. Seary. The MOST REVEREND JOSEPH A. HICKEY, O.S.A., S.T.M., JC D , Prior General of fbe Order of Sain! Allglhflllt The Order of Saint Augustine traces its lineage, as a community of religious men, to the first monastery established by St. Augustine in Tagaste, Africa, shortly after his conversion in the year 388. Today the twenty-six provinces of the Order circle the globe. In 1948 the Augustinians are rebuilding the war-torn missions in China and the Philippines, extending their mission work in Africa, Australia, and South America, opening new schools and colleges in the United States and Cuba. It is with justifiable pride that Tulle Loge salutes the supreme moderator of the Augustinian Order, Father Hickey, a native son of Illinois. Fr. Hickey was born in Chicago, Ill., on May 30, 1883. He was vested as a novice at Villanova on March 17, 1902. His studies in philosophy and theology were made at Villanova and International Augustinian House of Studies in Rome. He was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood on December 22, 1906. In 1908, Fr. Hickey received the degree of Doctor of Canon Law from the Apollinaris in Rome. From 1910 to 1925 he filled various important offices at Villanova College. He was called from his duties as President of Villanova College to Rome where he assumed the duties of Assistant General of the Order. Besides his duties as Assistant General, he served the Holy See as Consultor of the Congregation of the Sacraments, and as Apostolic Visitator for various Religious Institutes. He was Guest Lecturer in the Canon Law School of the Catholic University of America before his election in 1947 to the oflice of Prior General. The students of St. Thomas High School invoke for him the guidance of Our Mother of God Counsel. ANNUAL RETREAT The annual retreat this year was conducted by His Excellency, Bishop john J. Boylan, and the Reverend Francis J. Fenton, O.S.A. His excel- lency spoke to the seniors and Fr. Fen- ton to the underclassmen. A Christian education must be centered in Christ. The climax of our union with Christ in this life is in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Therefore, taking an active and intelligent part in the Mass is stressed at St. Thomas. The students are given the opportunity of assisting at Mass daily. Every Friday the entire student body actively participates in the Mass by reciting the responses of the Mass and reciting with the eelebranc the Gloria, Credo, and Agnus Dei. The scripture lessons are read in English by a student while the celebrant is reading them in Latin. This ancient office of lector was performed this year by Harold Dempsey. THE HEART OF ST. THOMAS Many Masses are offered daily in chapel. Students are given the privilege of serving these early morning Masses. THOMAS HIGH SCHOOL, ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS In 1910, two years after Rockford was made a diocese, St. Thomas High School was opened for boys and girls. The present building was erected in 1929 for the education of boys exclusively. In 1933, St. Thomas High School was entrusted to the Augustinian Fathers. Catholicism in Rockford depends in great measure upon St. Thomas High School. XIX THE RCDLE OF TGLLE LEC-E The staff of TOLLE LEGE '48 has endeavored to present in a pic- torial and literary review the religious and scholastic life of the student, social events, clubs, societies, and athletic contests. The permanent record of this scholastic year has both present and future value. TOLLE LEGE will give you, your parents, and friends much pleasure now, but this pleasure will be enhanced and multiplied a hundred- fold as the years go by and memories fade. FACULTY ...i.... TIILVMAS TOLLIC LITGI5'-18 TOLLE LEGE So was I speaking, and weeping in the most bitter contrition of my heart, when, lo! I heard from a neighbouring house a voice, as of boy or girl, I know not, chanting, and oft repeating, Take up and readg Take up and read. Instantly, my countenance al- tered, I began to think most intently, whether children were wont in any kind of play to sing such words: nor could I remember ever to have heard the like. So checking the torrent of my tears, I aroseg interpreting it to be no other than a Command from God, to open the book, and read the first chapter I should ind .... Eagerly then I returned to the place where Alypius was sittingg for there had I laid the volume of the Apostle, when I arose thence. I seized, opened, and in silence read that section, on which my eyes first fell: No! in rioiing and dru11kenmfss, not in rhanzbering and wantonness, not in sfrifc' and emfying: but pu! yr' on Ihr' Lord lexus Cbrisf, and make noi provision for the flesh, in l'0l1F1llJiSC'l'I1C'C. No further would I ready nor needed I: for instantly at the end of this sentence, by a light as it were of serenity infused into my heart, all the darkness of doubt vanished away. Q Q R N4-. We look back with appreciation to our four years under the guiding hands of the Augustinian Fathers. We have received an education built on Catholic principles. This education will serve us as a basis for further advancement in temporal knowledge and as a ground- work for spiritual advancement. This club renders invaluable assistance to the school. It sponsors card parties, dances, bingos, and dinners. Lyne came to St. Thomas last September and immediately established himself as the guiding light of our athletic program. He has worked hard to draw up the Hnest schedule and to pro- cure the best in equipment for the boys. Realizing the work that Fr. Lyne has done ATHLETIC for us, we give him our fullest cooperation in all his undertakings. Mr. George D. Slafkosky came to St. Thomas this year from Kirkland High School and assumed the duties of head football and basketball coach. A very easy way of describing Scoop would be to call him the builder. He started from scratch this year, worked very hard with the sophomores and juniors, and should have very fine teams in the years to come. A great deal of thanks and credit should be given to Mr. William Todd who took time out from his duties as circulation manager of the Rockford Newspapers to come over to St. Thomas and assist in building a football team of which we can be proud. l'r. Lyne, Asst. Coach Todd, Coax l Slafkosky, Fr. Lchanc. 60 ST. Tuomfxs TOI.I.EI.EG1i'-4X STAFF The other members of the football staff were Father Cornelius R. Lehane who coached the Junior Varsity football team, and assistant coach Fr. Lyne. Fr. Lehane worked many long hours with the boys without any recognition except for the satisfaction of having coached a winner and developed players for the varsity team. Mr. Robert Wings Phillip, ,38, the lightweight basketball coach at St. Thom- as each year does a magnificent job. He started from scratch and built a team that Won fifteen games and lost eight. As can be seen from the impressive record, he has done a great deal to aid in building future varsity basketball players. The man of Whom one hears the least, COACH PH1LL11' COACH SLAFKOSKY but who has one of the finest teams each year is Father James G. Corrigan, our baseball coach. He has been coaching baseball here for several years, and as yet he has not had a loser. He demands a great deal from the boys, but his efforts pay off. FR. -IAMIES G. CORRIGAN, O.S.A ST.
