ST. THOMAS DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL BRADDOCK, PA 15104 Seventy Six Years of Tradition The Junior Class has been an active part of St. Thomas District High School for the past three years. They are now faced with a difficult adjustment. Most of the Juniors will be attending a new high school for their senior year. We, the Senior Class, hope the Juniors realize that we really do care and wish them the best of luck wherever they may choose to complete their education. Because of this unfortunate situation, this book, with all the time, care, and effort put into it, is dedicated to the Graduating Class of 1985. Best of Luck! from The Class of 1984. In relating the history of any long-established institution there is always the quiet fear that someone’s most important memory will be missed. Many memories have been crammed in the 76 year existence of Saint Thomas High School and this is not an attempt to try and recall the maximum number, but to savor the highlights of a tradition of education of which thousands of students have been a part. A few years after ground was broken for the construction of Edgar Thomson Works in 1873, Saint Thomas parish had the foresight to build a frame school and parish hall for the expanding community under the direction of Father Peter Hughes. By 1881, five Sisters of Mercy were needed to staff the school which had been steadily increasing in enrollment. And by 1883, with Father Hickey as pastor, a new brick building was erected and dedicated. This was noted as one of the most innovative and ambitious school projects in the diocese at the time. Shortly after his arrival in 1905, the r w pastor, Father Robert McDonald, driven by vision, concentrated on his school. Through his efforts, Saint Thomas estab- lished the first parish academic high school and launched the diocese into a new educational era. Due to other community obligations, the Sisters of Mercy withdrew and the Sisters of St. Joseph assumed the teaching responsibilities. Saint Thomas High School began as a three year chool with ten students, graduating seven girls and three boyV; in 1911. In 1915, Father McDonald invited the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs, Columbus, Ohio, to staff the school when the Sisters of St. Joseph asked for a release from their teaching assignments. Under the direction of the Dominican Sisters the educational programs of the school soared and the Saint Thomas tradition of educational excellence was firmly established. During the 1950’s the condition of the old Saint Thomas school showed great need for constant repair due to age and a lack of space due to increased enrollment. At this time plans began and were financially supported through the bequest of a generous Catholic businessman, W. W. Vilsack, for a new school building. A new era for Saint Thomas High School began in 1962 with the evolution of the parish school to a district high school. This move required a reorganization of the educational system which reduced it to a four year school. A new expanded facility complete with numerous classrooms, labs, a chapel, and a multipurpose area, named in honor of Fr. McDonald, was built on the same site as the previous school. Ten years later, under the guidance of Father Robert Duch, Saint Thomas once again led the diocese in innovative educational endeavors with a program of learning based on student needs, which went beyond the traditional classroom modes. The pioneering educational spirit which had begun six decades before was not dimmed. This brief historical account cannot possibly acknowledge individually all those who have been a part of the traditions, achievements and character of Saint Thomas Parish and District High Schools. The lives of so many have been touched by a host of dedicated people including various religious orders, lay faculty and staff, parents, benefactors, and students (including 3,272 graduates) whose contributions are the spirit of Saint Thomas School. This year, the Torch of Honor is passed on to Susan Keane and David Pekor. Susan and David have both been real assets to our school. Susan has been involved in such activities as Cheerleading, Pep Club, Yearbook, Spanish Club, Art Club, T.I.P., and the Newspaper. David has been a member of the National Honor Society, Computer Club, T.I.P., and Spanish Club. Both students have been very active in our liturgical services throughout their four years at Saint Thomas. Since it’s beginning, the Torch of Honor has represented the high value that Saint Thomas District High School places on a well rounded education. It is the hope of the administration and faculty that the flame of the torch remain with all of our students throughout their lives. Congratulations Susan and Dave! of Honor Susan Keane Dav id Pekor 20 Ring Ceremony On Wednesday, October 13, 1982, the junior class held their ring ceremony in St. Micheals Church in Braddock. The celebrant of the mass was Fr. Kunco. The juniors worked together and came up with the theme “friendship” and a song composed by Shalimar which expressed the importance of friends. The highlight of the ceremony was when the juniors distributed their rings to one another. After the ceremony, coffee and cakes were served to the juniors and their families. “Well, Dave, what do you think?' “Friends” by Shalimar Friends, I’ve got friends. Don’t be ashamed of how you feel when someone lends you a helping hand, because the bottom line is being for real in everyway that you can. Ask yourself: After all that you’ve learned would you do the same thing if the tables would turn? Well my answer is yes, ’cause I’ve been thru the test now I never forget my Friends. You can bet, I’ve got Friends my values are with my Friends so glad that I — I’ve got Friends and the fair weather kind. Whenever I am feeling down and out, they help me get through the rainy days they lift my spirits, and they raise my doubts they chase those raindrops away. If I had a dime for every time — that they have stood by my side hoping things turned out right I would be a millionaire, and my wealth I would share — ’cause I’d be no where without my Friends. 21 Since childhood, every girl has dreamed of finding the right person, dressing up in gowns of lace, receiving flowers, and spending a magical evening at their junior prom. Many of these dreams became a reality on May 13, 1983. The prom was held at the Greentree Holiday Inn, where the couples enjoyed an evening of dinner and dancing. The “junior class of 1983” wishes to express a special thanks to Sr. Margaret and all those who helped make our prom “truly” a night to remember. Initiation On the 15th and 16th of Sept., the Freshman were officially welcomed into the school by the traditional initiation ceremony which was conducted by the Junior Class. Each “Frosh” was assigned a “big brother or sister.” These “big brothers and sisters” asked the Freshman to do bizarre things such as wearing signs, doing dances, baking cookies, and wearing their clothes backwards. On the final day of initiation, the Freshman were dressed in silly costumes created by the Juniors. Then the “Frosh” were put on stage to do skits such as an all male beauty pageant, relay races, and ice cream and licorice eating contests. After initiation, we warmly welcomed the freshman and let them know that they are now apart of St. Thomas. What’s going on here! 88 Dances Throughout the school year, St. Thomas has a variety of dances. These fundraisers are for such things as: the Whale-Watch Trip, the Junior Prom, and the missionaries. St. Thomas also sponsors a Cystic Fibrosis Super-dance for ten hours in order to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Research. The clubs and organizations are grateful to all those who attended and have made those dances successful. Kelly’s getten down. Doesn’t she look pretty. 91 As each school year begins with an opening mass and ends with the graduation ceremony, several special occassions between this time are celebrated with a liturgy. With the guidance of Mr. Matlak the students participate by reading, singing, and carrying up of the gifts. This is one way of showing our Christian faith that has been a part of St. Thomas’ tradition for many years. Liturgies Students enter for a school liturgy. News Memories We Need It Bad In 1979, the first senior class trip to Florida was held. Every year, for the past five years, the seniors have been selling tickets in order to pay for their plane fare, rooms, and this year, a trip to Disney World and the Epcot Center. The seniors have been selling tickets since the third week of school. They are selling tickets ranging from 40 to 150 a week. They receive their tickets on Monday and sell them during the week. The tickets are worth $100.00 and gooff on Saturdays. The seniors are now anticipating the time when they can board the plane which is enroute to Daytona Beach, Florida. They will be staying at the Mayan Inn, a hotel that is located directly on the beach. On May 23rd, the Senior Class of ’84 will arrive in Florida for a week full of fun and sunshine which will give them many memories that will last forever. Looking back over the last four years, 1 remember how it felt to walk through the glass doors of St. Thomas, as a freshman. There were butterflies in my stomach, wondering if my uniform looked right, asking where my homeroom was, and hoping my schedule would get easier to remember. But as the days, weeks, months, and years flew by, 1 thought about what it would be like starting all over again. From freshman year to senior year, time went so fast. There has been a total of 3233 graduates from 1911-1983 here at St. Thomas. The first graduating class in 1911 consisted of only nine students. This year, there will be 42 students. It’s going to be hard to forget a place that is so familiar to me and to leave people I’ve come to know so well. Thinking about graduation, four happy and exciting years, brings back so many memories. The Class of ’84 is special because it will be the last graduating class from St. Thomas. This year will not only be a beginning, but also an end to a long, successful tradition. Good luck and success to all the 1984 graduates and students of St. Thomas High School. By: Daneen Kuszaj By: Margie Horner Fad Day On January 12th, the Yearbook Staff sponsored a fad day at St. Thomas. The four categories were: Sporty, Preppy, 50’s, and Punk Rock. A lot of people showed up in everything from bobby socs and mini skirts to greased back hair and leather jackets. Some people went all the way with their costumes by adding spikes, colored hair, and sunglasses. Thanks to all those who dressed and made this day a big success. By: Jill Hoover Presses Roll The first edition of The Tomcat Times was published in September of 1983. It was the first school newspaper that St. Thomas High School has published in many years. With Mrs. Zwilling as moderator, the staff is composed of five senior editors and students from other grades all working together. The Tomcat Times spotlighted the top news of the school, features, sports and T.l.P. For entertainment, a comic strip and Happy Ads page were added. The Tomcat Times was a welcome and refreshing addition to this school year. Thanks to all those who “made it work.” By: Lori Patterson IPs Back The senior privilege has again been granted after being eliminated for the past six years. This privilege was granted by Sr. Josephine after a meeting with the seniors discussing the importance and symbolism of the privilege. The girls must still wear the uniform skirt slacks. but with their choice of shirt. The boys don’t have to wear ties. 94 Kook’s AKA Lunchbox Harry Tsironis came from Macedonia, located in the northern part of Greece. He was trained to be an industrial designer. After studying in Italy, he landed a job in Florence which was interrupted by World War II. Greece and Italy being on opposing sides, forced Harry to intern in a civilian prison for two years. At the end of the war, because of his fluency in Italian, Harry was hired by the Greek Embassy in Italy, as a translator. Eventually he came to the United States, but was unable to find a job in his own field. Because of his inability to speak the english language, as a last resort, he took a job washing dishes in Providence, Rhode Island, and from there graduated to cook. During his early years in this country, Harry met his wife, Jane Kook. He says, “It was love at first sight.” After they married, Harry began working at his father-in-law’s restaurant, which soon became known as Kook’s. Harry worked there for forty years taking over the management when Mr. Kook retired. In September 1983, Harry became ill and had to have an operation. Two weeks before the news about the school closing became public, he sold the restaurant to Pat and Darleen O’Brien. Later on, Harry said, “It was like cutting out a piece of my heart. All the kids at St. Thomas were like my own. I miss them all the time.” Well, St. Thomas hasn’t been the same without you Harry — Thanks for everything — We Love You By: Kim Lucarelli Whale Watch Trip §2 Closing The Doors Wednesday, September 21, 1983 was a very sad day for all the students and faculty of St. Thomas District High School. Sister Josephine Macias announced that the bishop had ordered the closing of the school in June of 1984. The major reason behind this decision is the decline in enrollment. St. Thomas’ closing brings an end, to an era of the steel valley. The high school has been in existence for quite a while and graduated its first class in 1911. Since that day on, thousands of students have come and gone through these doors leaving with knowledge and pride of being an alumni of St. Thomas. The doors may close with this graduating class of 1984, but the memories will last forever in the minds and hearts of the many who walked those hallowed halls. This is our final tribute. From May 2nd to the 6th, students of St. Thomas High School will travel to Provincetown, Massachusetts, to observe a group of nearly extinct whales. The trips purpose, according to moderator Miss Linda Means, is to observe the whales in their natural habitat and learn how we affect the ocean. She also says that since no other high school in Pennsylvania has gone on the trip, the students of St. Thomas will have an especially unique opportunity to see these great whales. Since it is the last year for St. Thomas, Miss Means is trying to make this trip the best possible. Added to this years itenerary is a visit to New York where the students will tour the Museum of Natural History and see a show at Radio City Music Hall. This years trip will have 31 participants. Judging from the previous trip last year, a good time and learning experience is anticipated by all. By: Lisa Burkovich By: Susan Keane St. T’s. Christmas On Wednesday, December 21, 1983, St. Thomas H.S. held “A St. Thomas Christmas.” This was a day devoted to the students doing Christmas activities. Groups' were formed to do holiday activities such as wrapping gifts, caroling, delivering candy-grams, and much more. Also, each class was asked to bring in some food for lunch. After lunch, a prayer service was held, carols were sung, and all were wished a Merry Christmas. 95 By: Rosemary Meres Burned Braddock hopes in ruins of 81-year-old church By Robert Baird The Pittsburgh Press icy comment on the church tragedy Fire investigators have determined that overheated electrical wiring was the cause of the fire that destroyed the 81-year-old St. Thomas Catholic Church in Braddock. ending a year-long struggle by parishioners to keep the church open. A year ago. parishioners accepted a challenge from then-Bishop Vincent Leonard of the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese to raise $40,000 for repairs needed to keep their church on Braddock Avenue open. The church’s 257 families held craft and bake sales, bingo sessions, bazaars and dances from Jan. 1 to April 1 that enabled them to meet and surpass their goal. The money kept coming in and before it was over we had $55,000 to work with. said Mary Mehok, who is head of the church’s building committee and worked on many fund-raising efforts. The church had replaced a rear roof, pointed and waterproofed the outside, removed a stained glass window and replastered the ceiling, she said. Mrs. Mehok said the church had completed all the required repairs and still had $20,000 in the fund. However, the fate of the church still had not been decided by the diocese. Auxilliary Bishop Anthony Bosco said the diocese was concerned that St. Thomas could not finance repairs the church would need in the future. Now. the church is in ruins. The Friday night fire destroyed the parishioners' efforts and hopes. The blaze was discovered about 6:30 p.m. by a janitor who had opened the building so a public address system could be installed. County Detective James Laird, an arson and fire investigator assigned to the county fire marshal’s office, said the fire was accidental in nature and electrical in origin. Laird said investigators found three gauges of electrical wire in the building. Some of the wiring was as old as the church and additional outlets were added over the years, he said. There was nothing wrong with the electrical work that had been done, he said, but the different sizes of wire running together caused overheating that smoldered into a fire. Laird said the fire started in a second-floor walkway above the main electrical panel at the rear of the church. Members of the church can attend St. Michael's, which has the same pastor, the Rev. Edward Kunco. Asked if he thought the church could be rebuilt. Kunco said. I don’t know. It depends on the thinking of the new bishop (Anthony J. Bevilacqua).’’ He noted there are six Catholic churches in Braddock, which has a declining population. Braddock firefighters and units from Rankin, East Pittsburgh, Turtle Creek, Forest Hills, Wilkins Township No. 3, West Homestead, Whitaker and North Versailles Central battled the fire for more than eight hours. Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries. Fighting back tears. Mrs. Mehok said a side altar that bears a statue of the Virgin Mary was not destroyed and stands unscathed amid the ruins, near where the fire was believed to have started. It’s uncanny,” she said. Firefighters considered the building a lost cause, she said, but they returned yesterday to put out some small smoldering fires. “I’m sure we re covered by insurance, but I don’t know to what extent. Small groups silently stood across the street looking at the ruins. Helen Matlack, a Braddock resident who is a member of St. Michael’s Church next door to St. Thomas, recalled the parishioners’ efforts to fix the church. “It’s sad because they had their hearts in that church.’’ Parishioners and firefighters were able to save the tabernacle, containing the Blessed Sacrament, and brass candlesticks from the 45- Blessed Mother stands proud, foot-high main altar. firs. Mehok. who has been a member of St Thomas for 48 years, a group of women had gathered recently to clean the candle-ks, saving the church the $220 that it would cost to have them pro-ionally cleaned. Dancing for C.F. The Superdance which is sponsored by the Student Council, has been held for the past 6 years. The students dance 8 long hours to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. Although St. Thomas may be a small school, each student raises much more than their share for the C.F. research campaign. A special thanks to everyone who has helped to raise this money. CARNAGE IN BEIRUT ER STORIES Troubled Coleco is cashing in big on the year’s hottest toy After Hours Many students don’t realize that teachers have outside interests other than teaching. When teachers go home after a school day, on weekends, and over summer vacation they participate in activities and hobbies in which they enjoy. Many of our faculty members are very gifted and talented. For example, Mrs. Zwilling enjoys sharing as much of her free time as possible working with her husband, Tom, on different projects around the house. During the warm weather they work in their vegetable and flower gardens and spend weekends with family and friends sailing their boat. The winter months bring them indoors where they work on wood crafting and other projects around the home. Mrs. Thaner enjoys camping in the summer, skiing in the winter, ten speed bicycling, and cross country. She also spends her spare time at an Aerobic Class. Her hobbies are refinishing old furniture, needlecrafts, sewing, and her vegetable garden. Miss Means is presently studying to be a nurse while working as a full time teacher. She attends school during the evening and on weekends. Her hobbies are painting, working on stained glass, needlecrafts, and photography. During the winter break she hopes to scuba dive at the Key. She is also very busy at this time raising money and working with students for the second whale watch trip. Sr. Norita enjoys volunteering for the First Carnegie Childrens’ Library of Braddock by helping to catalog books. Her hobbies include cross-stitching, needelpoint, knitting and crocheting, plus she also does some decoupage. After school Sr. Barbara enjoys doing some of her many different crafts. She does paper craft in which she makes things from cards. She also enjoys needlepoint and working with beads, she has made some very interesting things. She also has some other interests such as literary work and giving service to the Braddock Carnegie Library on Saturdays, she attends meetings there once a month. Mrs. Terry Willoughby, a new addition to our faculty transferred here from Hilltop Catholic High School in Knoxville where she taught business subjects for two years. She is the mother of three children and also has a pet Siamese cat named Missy who is twelve years old. Some hobbies she enjoys are playing Bridge, reading, and tending to her flower garden in the summer months. 102 Ads Ads Ads Ads Ads Ads Ads Ads Ads Ads Ads Ads • Transfer Programs • Career Programs • Full or Part-time Study • Affordable Tuition • Technical Programs BOYCE CAMPUS (The College in Your Community) IMMUNITY JLLEGE OF LEGHENY ALLEGHI COUNTY Badness Administration Accounting Retailing Computer Science Banking 4 Finance Office Management Real Estate Management Hospitality Management Medical Office Assistant Art-Music-Theatre Journalism Nursing Civil Engineering Natural Science Humanities Social Sciences Engineering Science Technology Electronic Engineering Technology Design 4 Drafting Technology Criminal Justice Medical Sonography Surgical Technology Nuclear Power Plant Technology Ask your guidance counselor about Community College - or write or phone Boyce Campus 595 Beatty Road Monroeville.
