This year the Torch of Honor was passed to Mary Fantaski. Mary has definitely demonstrated over the past four years the qualities and characteristics of a student who would receive the Torch of Honor. Mary has been a National Honor Society member for 3 years, and a Student Council Representative for 2 years. She belongs to the Spanish Club, Pep Club, and is co-captain of her Intramural team. Her outside activities involve participating in the Volunteer Service Program here at St. Thomas. Congratulations. Getting away from it all. Memories . . . Take the Pepsi challenge! Between Classes. Hey! Sexy! Dazed and confused. Open Arms For the Junior Class of ”82'', Friday, May 7, 1982 was a special evening, surrounded by all the excitement and anticipation of prom night. The prom was held at the Green Tree Holiday Inn, where the couples enjoyed an evening of dinner and dancing. Most couples continued on with the fun by attending the after prom, which was held at the Pilot House on the Monongahela wharf. Since the evening was such a huge success, the Junior Class of 82 , wishes to express a very special thanks to Ms. Robare and everyone who helped make the occasion a night to remember. Family and student body were present to witness the celebration of mass the blessing of rings by Fr. Timothy Whalen of St. Anselm's Parish, in Swissvale. Afterwards, coffee donuts were served to the juniors their families in McDonald Hall by the sophomore class. 24 Homeroom 101 25 Sharon Tkach Revco Co. Because of these hours at work, they may not have all the time that they would like for after school activities. That is why we, on the staff of ''Retrospect,'' devoted this page to the students. Junior year brings many expectations, and waiting for things to finally take shape can sometimes seem to be a whole world away. Class rings, the prom, meeting goals, and future education are just a few examples. But sooner than one realizes, the various events do take pace, and then fade ever so gently into memories. In essence, that is what the Junior year is ... a memory-making time in which its members have the chance to learn, achieve, anticipate, recollect, and grow. No longer are they the youngest class here at St. Thomas, rather, they have moved up in the ranks to Sophomores. But at this level it doesn't get any easier. Sophomore year can prove to be one of the toughest years in high school. First there are all of the difficult classes like Biology and Social Studies, to name a few. Then come all the various clubs that Sophomores manage to involve themselves in. These, among various other school activities can take up alot of time both in and out of school. Nevertheless, Sophomore year can prove to be one of the most rewarding years also. It gives the student a handle or puts him in a better position for preparing for what lies ahead in his remaining high school years. Friendships begin to deepen, ambitions broaden, goals are established and met, and efforts become stronger. But, most importantly, some kind of growth is achieved. This year the Freshmen class were required to attend school one day prior to all of the other classes. During the course of the day, they had the chance to meet one another, their teachers, and go through what would now be a daily routine for nearly nine months to follow. Through all the confusion and craziness of the first day of school, new surroundings and experiences, learning the ropes, and going through initiation, the Class of '86 has survived their first year of high school and have definitely become a part of St. Thomas. 36 Top Tomcats Homeroom 304 38 Some of the collectors for Childrens Hospital. At St. Thomas we feel the need to stretch out our hand to help others. Last year was the 5th year that we've held our Superdance for Cystic Fibrosis. Although we are such a small school, we always manage to bring in one of the largest amounts in the area. Last year we brought in a total of $ 1540 A new aspect was started by Ms. Robare this year. Students collected for Childrens Hospital by going around the classrooms and caroling on different nights. Some of the students went to Pgh. to give the money to KDKA. Even the waiting in line for 2 hours didn't damper their spirits. A total of $150 was collected and donated. Jack Bogut himself said that it was a good donation for the first year of collecting. Ms. Robare: supervisor of the collection for Childrens Hosp. 39 A Student’s Prayer Now I lay me down to study. I pray the Lord, I won't go nutty. If I should fail to learn this junk, I pray the Lord, I will not flunk. But, if I do, don't pitty me at all. Just lay my bones in the study hall. Tell my teacher I did my best, Then pile my books upon my chest. So, now I lay me down to rest, And pray I'll pass tomorrow's test. If I should die before I wake. That's one less test I have to take. Another lunch period spent in the Library. Another tough class. 40 Liturgies Dawn M. brings Fr. Kunco the offertory Tim H. and Joel M. lead Fr. Ragni to the alter. Singing God's praise. St. Thomas celebrated it's opening of another school year by Fr. Kunco on September 1982, in St. Michael Church. As a catholic school, St. Thomas instills in it's students the meaning of faith by holding masses through the year. Robert Bielek, a St. Thomas graduate of 1979, has donated his talent and time by adding music to our celebrations. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed their services. 41 Dances Most Scariest: A. Probola 42 Unknown: D. Pekor Throughout the school year St. Thomas has many dances for various occasions. Each dance is designed to support the club or organization sponsoring it. For example, the Alumni Dance was arranged by the Whale Watch group, moderator Ms. Robare, to raise funds for their trip to Massachusetts this year. The dances are usually D.I.'d by our schools A.V. Club, but once in a while it is done by a local disc jockey. Our dances are usually a big success and we hope to keep it that way in the dances to come. Most creative Kneeling: M. Horner, L. Presley, Standing: K. Lucas, C. Urda, B. Schockling, D. Kuszaj 43 On the days o{ September 28, 29, 30 and October 1, the Junior class had the opportunity to welcome the Freshmen by our traditional initiation week. The first three days consisted of the Frosh doing dances, wearing signs, and doing the silly things that the Juniors asked of them. The last day of initiation, was costume and stage day. The Freshmen were dressed in the costumes created by their “big brothers and sisters” and went on stage to do little skits such as an all male beauty contest and a game show. After initiation, we let the Frosh” know how welcome they are and how glad we are to have them as a part of our school. Watch out Dolly, here comes Pat! ’83 Initiation Mm, mm good! What a ham! 44 Tis the season The grand entrance Have yourself a merry little Christmas In the News St. Thomas’ Doors are Always Open By: David Metzgar The rumor about St. Thomas closing next year because of enrollment or funds is not true, according to Sr. Josephine, part of the money that is supplied by the Diocese is already here,'' she said in an interview last week. In a recent meeting called by Bishop Leonard, the pastors from some of the 22 local parishes agreed to support the school and give it their financial backing to keep it open because they believe that what's going on here is very good. To increase the enrollment for next year, Sr. Josephine has already started a program of finding potential students. She has contacted many elementary schools and has sent 6th, 7th, and 8th, grade students brochures about the quality of St. Thomas. She is working very hard to take the time to let people know that we're here. Students have to publicize in a positive way. People are proud of St. Thomas. That's the kind of publicity that we need.'' Future students will be coming from schools as close as St. Joseph's in Brad, and as far as Verona. What Sr. Josephine hopes attracts them are the classes being offered, such as Human Physiology and Chemistry II, which are not in many schools, and the new classes like French and computer courses.'' We try to offer a complete program as possible, but we can't offer everything. Another important point Sr. Josephine would like people to see is the closeness with a 9:1 ratio of students to teachers. A high enrollment next year would definitely mean more funds to the school. If there are not enough students, there is not enough money, and therefore fewer teachers. According to Bishop Leonard, there should be at least 50 new students to make up for the 49 seniors leaving ... to keep a balance in the school. Sr. Josephine expects that the changes she has made over the past few years will attract new students to keep the school going. If something doesn't change or evolve, it stagnates. If it means change, then we have to go with that. And that's exactly what she's doing. 46 The Tylenol Scare By: Beth Melko In October of 1982, Johnson Johnson announced an immediate recall of 93,400 bottles of Extra-Strength Tylenol. The Reason: At least seven Chicago residents died within minutes after taking Extra-Strength Capsules, each laced with as much as 65 milligrams of deadly cyanide. Cyanide is the name given to metal salts containing a carbon atom linked to a nitrogen atom. It is so toxic that 50 milligrams — a fraction of ateaspoon, can kill a person in as little as 15 minutes. Lethal doses of cyanide kill by disrupting the blood's ability to carry oxygen through the body by affecting the heart, lungs, and brain. Did you know that the school's origional colors were blue and gold? On January 10, 1983, the papers announced President Reagans plans to propose in his State of the Union Address, later in the month, the $ 1.67 an hour subminimum wage for youths. Product tampering does not end with the Tylenol Capsules. Nasal spray, candy, orange juice, and other pain relievers are just a few of the products that have been tampered with. There seems to be an endless number of targets and methods that product tamperers use. Who would of thought that a bottle of pain relievers could be responsible for the death of so many innocent people? The year of 1982 was the time for: The new heir of England Extra Terrestrial (E.T.) That's the question many of us are always asking! This year there is something to appeal to everyone's wardrobe. The ultra conservative look, the mini skirtscene, the taffeta dress, the tuxedo blouse with the bow tie, the cowboy boots, and of course we can't forget those designer jeans for both guys and girls. Keeping up with all these new fashions can be quite costly! If you are a smart shopper you can purchase clothes that can be worn with many things, to many different occasions! Make sure your clothes are fitted well, you have good grooming habits, and you're sure to be a smash especially in the fashion world. 47 Video Games: A Thing of the Present By: Kelly Salmon At one time not too long ago, there were only pinball machines. Now, as the age of computers is growing, so are video games and the number of people playing them. It Seems as though no AIU Career Workshop Stated By: Warner Mariani On the 18th, 19th, 22nd, of November, the Allegheny Intermediate Unit will be sponsoring career workshops for all Juniors and Seniors in the parochiol schools, that do not attend Forbes Trail, for career evaluation. The Intermediate Unit holds the free workshops annually for non-public schools, at no cost to the students or schools, to evaluate student career choices. For 9 days in December, members of the AIU will return to the schools with the evaluations and advice for the students who have taken the tests about their career choices. matter where you go, you see them. Whether it be the little store down the street, the pizza parlor, or the video 'arcade in the mall. It's hard to say whether this will be a passing phase like long hair and leather jackets, Candy Drive Begins By: Dean Bazzone Thursday, November 11, 1982, marked the opening of the annual Candy Drive, coordinated by Sr. Mary and the members of the business English classes, to raise funds for the school. Each student is required to sell one case of the candy. The cases contain 30 bars of the World's Finest chocolate almond candy at $ 1.00 a bar. The goal of the school is to make a profit of $4,000 for the expenses of the school and to pay for the prizes awarded. The top 3 sellers will receive $100, $50, and $25 plus a chance at the mystery prize and the top homeroom each day will receive a prize. but when a song and a Saturday morning cartoon is created for being the number one video game around you can bet they'll be in the limelight for some time. TIP Continues School Tradition By: Pat Ryan During the 82-83 school year St. Thomas TIP will give all students a chance to compete intrascholastically by individual and team sports. This is done in order to supliment the interscholastic competition between schools. It will survive even though the school enrollment has dropped drastically,” says Mr. Flohr. This adjustment has already been made. However, the real problem lies in attendance and participation of teams. It's going to be a close race in the boys division this year between Kachman's Cougars and McFetride's Fighting Irish,” says Mr. Flohr. But in the girls' division it looks like the Fantaschics are going to take it all the way.” Art Club The Art Club is an organization in which any student has the opportunity to be involved. Coach: Climey Wargo Dave (Capt.), Ron (Co. Capi.) 76 St. Thomas Still Has Look Of Winner Even after urban erosion took its toll, Braddock always had two specialties, the two areas where it could hang the best of them. Steel and basketball — Braddock's one-two-punch. Tradition crumbles easily these days. The Edgar Thompson Works of United States Steel, Braddock's mammoth front door, is hanging on, trying to keep the one tradition alive, even if it's at less than full force. And General Braddock High School, of course, has joined the other dinosaurs, leaving only St. Thomas and the courts outside the Talbott Towers to protect Braddock's heritage of bouncing balls. It couldn't be in better hands. They know a bit about the sport at St. Thomas, where Climey Wargo has, incredibly, fashioned a dynasty at a small Catholic school with some of the most stringent academic requirements a high school athlete can face. Wargo has won WPIAL championships and just about everything else there is to win shy of a state title, and the smiling man, who looks like a cross between Jack Warden and Mel Brooks, fig-, ures there’s a reason why the biggest prize has managed to scoot past him. He's testing me, says Wargo, looking beyond the ceiling. Wargo does that a lot, usually when he's in direct conversation with his boss, but occasionally to illustrate a point. These kids, 16, 17, 18 years old out there playing basketball. Their life doesn't depend on it,” Wargo says. We play our best, we play hard, if we don't win, we shake hands, we go home and we wake up tomorrow alive. If we can do that, we can look up and say, Thanks for another shot at it. This could be the best shot Wargo is waiting for. His team has speed, it has ... no, let's not pass over the speed with that kind of nonchalance. The Tomcats aren't your basic run-and-gun team. They’ve got five guys in their shorts who can, uh, run like heck, a team that might be better off if the court were 100 yards long. “I'm very optimistic about this club. It reminds me of the one when (former CMU star Joe) Belechak played for me, says Wargo, fully aware that Belechak played on back-back WPIAL champions in '75 and '76. “They've got team speed, they've got a lot of ability to think on the run. Wargo would certainly like to add to his list of District 7 triumphs, but he's going to have a great deal on his hands battling for the Section 19 crown. Lawrenceville Catholic, by virtue of the addition of 6-6 Marvin Bailey, has displaced St. Thomas on the pole position. I think our section's going to be a good one, Wargo says. “But 1 think we've got a shot at it like anyone else. Better than most, actually, thanks to the mean legs and equally mean moves of one Andre Carey, a player who is five inches short of being everything a basketball-playing human can possibly be. Andre's speed is exceptional. He's got good hands, and he's a heck of a team leader. If Andre was a bit taller, there is no question in my mind he’s a Division I prospect, says Wargo of his flashy playmaker. “If I was (a college coach) looking for a point guard, though, I would take a chance on him. He's smart, he penetrates, he knows how to dish off. In fact, Carey knows plenty of ways to penetrate, some of which are accomplished a good three feet off the ground. He knows plenty of ways to dish off, some of which are accomplished between his legs and behind his back. And he knows plenty of ways to shoot the ball, most of which are accomplished above the rim. Too bad he's only 5-11. Too bad for everybody but St. Thomas, because at that height Carey fits in well with the majority of his teammates. Only 6-4 Vaughn Lewis, a transfer from Allderdice, stands above the crowd. The rest — swing-man Ron Kachman, forward Tim Schirmer, guard Mark DePante and sixth man Lemar Byrd — vary between 5-9 and 6-0. Despite a recent disaster at the Woodland Hills Holiday Tournament — the Tomcats lost two straight and played horribly on both occasions — St. Thomas has the ingredients for a championship — caliber team. By his own doing, though Wargo must worry about injuries and grades wrecking his carefully constructed .unit. “You don't come here for basketball. You come here for an education, he claims. And the people at St. Thomas live up to it, requiring each player to have a card signed by his teachers which states the player is keeping up in his schoolwork. As long as he’s working to the best of his ability and he's no problem in class, then I'm not going to hurt a kid. I want to be fair, the coach explains. But don't let kids try to slide by. That's when you have trouble. Wargo refers to his players as sons, and with seven kids he doesn't need any more. He wants them. I wouldn't trade these kids for a million dollars, Wargo says, the phrasing smacking of cliche but the attitude sincere. “Over 27 years at St. Thomas, I've never had a player who brought me any shame, who got into any trouble that I know of, says Wargo. “They gave me everything they had. What they got back, often, was a shot at a scholarship. A lot of Wargo's players have gone on to play ball at various college levels. Some, like Belechak and Robert Morris' Leroy McClendon, are more notable than others. But all the recruiters had to somehow find tiny St. Thomas and all had one dynamite road map. “They don't know where Braddock St. Thomas is, Wargo admits. But win, and all of a sudden, they know. They spend endless hours preparing their students for present and future education, and are to be commended for their dedication. New members of the 1982-83 faculty include: Mrs. Gedid, Sr. Margaret Quinn, and Sr. Maurice Coyne. Another new group to join the faculty this year is the Administrative Team. Their basic purpose is to make connections between the faculty and students. They help to establish spirit within the faculty, which in turn filters through to the students for a more unified school. Teachers do go home after the school day, on weekends, and over summer vacation. They do not just fade into the walls until the next morning or the next school year. Just as we students have other interests besides school, teachers have hobbies, outside interests, and families that take up a great deal of their time. Many of our faculty members, here at St. Thomas, are very gifted and talented. Mr. Bernard Matlak, is one good example. He does electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, and home remodeling and repair. Mr. Matlak mentions, however, that his family is his 1 interest. Mrs. Karen Vachon-Thaner uses her artistic talents in designing window displays along with various sewing and needlework projects she does in her free time. And let's not forget cross-country skiing and camping, two of her favorite hobbies. Sister Barbara Obringer uses her spare time by giving service to the recently renovated Braddock Library. She also enjoys doing various crafts and recently displayed them at a bazaar. Mrs. Christine Gedid is very busy in her free'' time. She's traveled all over Europe, Specifically — England, France and Spain to name a few. Havin' a whalin' good time! Mrs. Gedid also enjoys reading, aerobic dancing, and keeping her 2 year old busy. Ms. Linda Robare has been organizing a whale-watch trip for the students of St. Thomas. Ms. Robare, along with a bus load of students, will be traveling to Provincetown, Massachusetts, in the spring. Ms. Robare's first trip in October proved to be a unique opportunity to see our planet's largest creatures in their natural habitat. Sr. Flora Cendrosky uses her spare time by making crafts, including Christmas figures and seashell arangements. She also enjoys directing skits. At last year's faculty Christmas dinner, she arrived in a red and white suit that really added to the festivities. And, perhaps to many people's surprise, our Principal, Sr. Josephine Macias, has a license from the Pittsburgh Beauty Academy in cosmetology. In the evenings, she enjoys giving haircuts and permanents. Sewing is another one of her big interests. Anyone can see this by looking at the handmade, stylish curtains in her office. Mr. Jeff Flohr is currently going to Graduate School at Pitt, which he claims caused the decline of his comedy career. Along with being a tennis instructor and a chairman of the Forest Hills Democratic Committee, Mr. Flohr's 6 year old son, Jesse, keeps him very active. Mr. Joseph Chvasta has a very insatiable sweet tooth for jelly doghnuts. Mr. C. also likes to fish, write poetry, read, and build miniature railroads when his hands aren't too sticky. Mrs. Barbara Zwilling puts her extra energy into crafts decorating her home. Along with her husband, she enjoys going to the theatre and sharing good times with family and friends. The good, the bad, The happy, the sad, all are a part of you and me. For when I arrived I was still a child young, frightened, and confused. I had to adjust to certain situations. And eventually I did. I matured, though at times I may still get rowdy. I learned, I taught, I grew. I gained much confidence in myself, It is my duty to depart. I will walk out with head held high, and no regrets. I am an adult now, I must leave you Saint Thomas. I love you. 95 .AUTffyiO's , °x SuJJL I In Maw, , Sozhz Z lM JiWOHUCds - 5 I n. fW 4- n L P CAuMu, o .icV t r «n 1 % 5oSlL ' 3 % ■ X . £i 3 , fO .io (sd 6V£A 96 It seems too hard to believe but almost another school year has gone by. This is one of the best times to retrospect. Remember your first impression of the school? Most upperclassmen take it for granted but it has terrified many Frosh. In time we all began to make friends. Although there were some rough times, we managed to become like a family. We did things that families do. We ate together, went to church together, played pranks on each other, and sometimes shed tears over another. We became one. As in most families there comes a time when the child leaves the protection of the home to find themselves in the real world. It is the same for us. The Seniors of '83 shall be leaving us shortly. For us it will be a time of adjustments. The Junior class will have to fill their empty spot. The Seniors will have to get used to being the last man on the totem pole once again. Whatever it is that the students decide to do, we send with them the blessings of God. Good luck class of '83. 97 Aftuertisements • Full or Part-time Study. • Affordable Tuition • Technical Programs BOYCE CAMPUS (The College in Your Community) 88um8niof HENV TV Ask your guidance counselor about Community College - or virile or phone Boyce Business Administration Accounting Retailing Computer Science Banking Finance Office Management Real Eitate Hospitality Management Medical Office Art-Music-Theatre Journalism Nursing Civil Engineering Natural Science Humanities Social Sciences Engineering Science Technology Electronic Engineering Technology Design Drafting Technology Criminal Justice Medical Sonography Surgical Technology Noclear Power Plen Technology 100 MAESTROS CAFE Visit with the Maestro where he will conduct a symphony of culinary delights.
