Sr. 1982 Thomas praddocK High School Pa. Four years can be o very long rime and a very short rime — simultaneously. As Freshmen rhe Class of 1982 peered inro rhe future ond graduation — that Lost Year — seemed so for away. Yet, now os Seniors, September of 78 was just like yesterday. A flood of memories crowds in among rhe days and it's only in looking bock that we con recoil rhe changes that hove token place in these four years. People changes are ore most obvious — so many faces that hove come ond gone in o high school lifetime: classmates, teachers, administrators... rhe story of life is change. For rhose who stayed, there were changes also. Some grew roller, larger, stronger, bolder,- ond some grew inrellecrually, spiritually, gracefully. No one stayed rhe some Even buildings changed in rhose four years — most of them disappeared. The Class of 82 was rhe lost class to run o block ond o half in oil Isinds of weather for music and art closses — rhe Tri-boro building is now memory The segments of our lives ore oil little memories of people, places, ond events. Four years has brought rhe Class of '82 to rhe end of high school memory-making and to rhe brink of new adventures, new faces, new concepts. On Friday, April 24,1981, the Green-tree Marrior Inn provided the atmosphere that enabled the juniors to hove a night to remember. The rheme: The Best of Times could sum up the feelings of the 35 couples who attended the formal occasion to ear, donee, and have a night on the town. The sit-down dinner consisted of o fruit cup, salad, veal, potato, vegetable, and sherberr. DJ.’s provided o variety of music which included disco, new wave, romance and good ole' rods roll.'' Under the supervision of Ms. Ro-bare, the doss raised the $1,200 needed for the prom Through hard work and a desire to make sure rhor their prom was the best of rimes. Their money-raising efforts included: a candy sale, a bake sale and bingo, dances and a skating party. For the first rime in five years, the doss appointed a prom queen and court. The 1981 Queen was Stacie Foster, who was escorted by Jerry Dur-icko. Stacie's court consisted of Jackie Barclay, Gino Michaels, Korhy Neff, Toni Poyne and Joddy Siksa. The moss wos celebrated by Forher Hurnik of Sr. Helen's Parish wirh rhe rheme Stairway ro Heaven. In his homily, Father Hurnik talked abour many differenr types of rings and how rhey are used. Friendship, engagement, and wedding rings were examples. Father also told us rhe meaning of rhe ring is eternity. He also talked about rhe unity that we share as a class and how our rings are a symbol of rhar unity, and how that unity would last even though we would be graduating soon. After Father Hurnik finished his homily, he blessed our rings and we went through rhe ceremony of giving rhe rings ro one another. It was a memorable day ro all who were there. We would like ro extend a special thanks ro Mrs. Zwilling and Kim Keane for all rhe hard work rhey pur into making our ceremony so special. 42 Super Seniors Homeroom 102 An ourbursr of emorion . . The scene wos the crowded rooms of 204 and 206. The day wos October 1, 1981. The issue or hand was rhe newly devised merger plan, which combined rhe General Braddock Area school disrricr wirh rhe Churchill, Swissvale, Edgewood and Turtle Creek Area districts. The speakers were Mrs. Linda Lafferry, president of Sove Our Schools (SOS), who is ogoinsr rhe merger, ond Mr. Charles Williams of rhe Norionol Association for rhe Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), who is in fovor of rhe merger. The presentation of rhe two sides was followed by o rime of questioning by rhe students. It wos during this rime rhor Jomes Seibert mode statements concerning education which showed rhe emotional side of rhe issue. In other words, it fired everybody up! The program was coordinated by Mr. Jeff Rohr. On rhe first rwo days, rhe Frosh did lirrle donees, song songs, and basically did crazy things rhar rheir big brothers and sisters rdd them ro do. The rhird and final doy was dress up doy. The freshmen wore some really creative outfits mode by rheir iniriarors. Fa example, scours, foorboll players, a Hawaiian hula dancer, a nurse, and, of course, Dolly Perron's comperirion! In rhe afternoon, they pur on a show ond really let us know whar kind of ralenr rhey hod. Parochial Teachers Attending Institute Members of St. Thomas High School faculty will join teachers from St. Joseph’s and St. Brendan’s in attending the annual Tri-Diocesean teachers’ institute today and Friday, October 8th and 9th This year’s meeting, which brings together teachers and administrators from Catholic schools in the Pittsburgh. Greensburg and Altoona-Johnstown dioceses will be held at the new Merchandise Mart Expo Center in Monroeville. Students from the three local schools will be free from classes on Thursday and Friday while their teachers and administrators attend the meeting. The opening Mass will be celebrated bv four bishops assisted by school officials including Rev. Robert Duch, former headmaster at St. Thomas High School, current- ly the Pgh Diocese Associate Superintendent of Schools. Among other topics, meetings scheduled for Thursday and Friday will deal with spirituality for teachers, maximizing learning, and discus-sions on classroom environment. CLASSES DISCUSS MERGER On October first. Social Studies classes hosted a discussion on the new Woodland Hills District and the Merger. Guest speakers were Mrs Linda Lafferty, President of Churchill area S.O.S. and Charles Williams, former Braddock School Board Member and represen tative of the N.A.A.C.P. After the speakers presented their opposing views on the merger, students had an opportunity to question them and ask for claifications. Bishop Visits Braddock For Opening Of Classes At St. Thomas High School sum New Principal At St. Thomas The students and faculty at St. Thomas High School marked the opening of the 1981-82 school year on Sept. 8th at St. Michael’s Church with a liturgy celebrated by Bishop Vincent Leonard. The Bishop was assisted by area pastors: Rev. William Hut nik, Rev. William Rutledge. Rev. Edward Kunco, and by the Rev. Lawrence DiNardo. Master of Ceremonies. The liturgy was prepared by members of the senior class under the direction of Bernard Matlak. Senior Kenneth Riling was the organist. St. Thomas, which is the oldest Catholic High School in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, will be celebrating its hundredth year of service next year. PRAISE FOR ALL In his homily at the mass, Bishop Leonard commended the students, parents, pastors, as well as the diocese of Pittsburgh for promoting the school system which has provided and maintained the school. Sister Josephine Macias of the Community of Divine Providence, is the new principal of St. Thomas District High School in Braddock A teacher here for the last four years, her appointment was announced by the Rev Hugh Lang, superintendent of schools in the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese. Sr. Josephine succeeds Sr. Mary Faith Reaney as principal. Sisters of the Dominican Order, who have been at St. Thomas since the school was established, will continue on the teaching staff. The school expects an enrollment of approximately 240 when the 1981-82 term begins. CAME FROM DETROIT The newly appointed principal came to Pittsburgh from Detroit 17 years ago. In addition to the four years she has been at St. Thomas, Sr. Josephine also taught for nine years at Divine Providence Academy, and before that at St. Basil elementary school in Carrick. She is a graduate of Carlow College and is now studying for her Masters degree in science and education for administration and supervision at Bank Street College in New York City. She also holds a license in cosmetology from Pittsburgh Beauty Academy.
