I RETROSPECT 1979 ST. THOMAS District High School Braddock, Pa. ■■■■■ fi piece of yesterday for today... During our years at St. Thomas, we have come to look on life as a puzzle. With this thought in mind, we look in retrospect at the significant pieces which were added to our puzzle during the last months of the '77-’78 school year. The Mission Club's Quing of Shamrocks contest raised over $900 which enabled us to contribute to many worthwhile causes, including a home for retarded children. We said good-bye to Fr. Duch, prepared to move into a new stage of Project P.E.R.S.O.N., and enjoyed the year-end activities — the prom, concerts. Ethnic Day, and graduation. With a touch of nostalgia still lingering in our minds, we now move into this year’s additions to our puzzle . . . 3 We, as seniors, have come to realize over the past four years that the puzzle of life will probably never be completely solved. But with the guidance of our families, friends, and teachers, we prepare to leave St. Thomas more confident of finding the missing pieces to our own puzzle and ready to help others with theirs. We’ve also learned that we must see our responsibility to ourselves and understand our unique contribution to life. STEVE BONACCI Now if all my golden moments could be rolled into one . . . The Seniors chosen for this honor are John Belechak and Cindy Killmeyer. During their high school careers, John and Cindy have been extremely active in both school and community activities. Both were elected to National Honor Society as Juniors, and both have served as members of Upstart for the past three years. Cindy has participated in the Buhl Planetarium Science Fair and the Westinghouse Science Honors Institute. She has also been a member of T.I.P. for four years and a cheerleader for three years. At St. Maurice Church, Cindy sings with the folk group and is involved in the C.C.D. program. Besides his academic achievements, John has been a member of T.I.P. and the basketball team for all four years, and is co-captain of both this year. Outside of school, he has participated in the Junior Achievement program, and does volunteer work for his church. He holds a certificate of merit from the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers. Congratulations to both for meriting this high honor. Seniors 25 SENIOR DIRECTORY JOE BARBUSIO 908 Roy St. N. On September 5, after the initial confusion of making schedule changes. Finding room assignments, and learning new teachers names had cleared, we gathered together to ask a blessing on the year ahead. We were honored to have Bishop Leonard concelebrate Mass for us, along with area pastors. Following the Mass, the Bishop and the other priests joined the members of Upstart and the rest of the student body for lunch. The season of Advent provided the setting and theme for the annual Retreat Days, held on December 6 and 7. Planned by the Religion Department, the days included films, discussions, the opportunity for reconciliation, and a liturgy. But perhaps most importantly, the days provided the opportunity for faculty and students to put aside academic pressures and share their values, hopes, and fears. 1 TALENT $ECW Talent Show 59 T ,4i DANCES Dances at St. Thomas' have been more varied than usual this year. At the Halloween Dance, prizes were given for the best costumes. And for the first time in three years, the Chorus sponsored a '50s Dance, featuring Mike Scherbanic doing his Elvis impersonation. Other dances included the Publications Dance, the Freshman Initiation Dance, and the Quing of Shamrocks Dance. CANDIDS A typical day at St. Thomas D.H.S. finds students involved in a variety of activities in a variety of places. For some, a spot in Kook's has become a second home. For others, behind Vilsack Hall is a favorite meeting place. For still others, the gym or an equally quiet place is the spot to cram for an upcoming test. Candids Two major parts of the puzzle are participation and leadership. The various clubs and organizations St. Thomas offers allow students the chance to put their creative abilities to work. Through the cooperation necessary for clubs and organizations to achieve their objectives, we learn the important contributions others make to our own puzzle. Upstart Each year students elect their representatives to UPSTART, which has as its functions to provide a source of communication between students and the faculty administration and to foster school spirit. They have sponsored dances and special activities such as Coke Day, the Candygrams, and the Door Decorating Contest. The group’s moderator this year is Sr. Marlene. Senior members of Upstart are Johnette Fantaski, Dave Ribich, Cindy Killmeyer, and John Belechak. Junior representatives are Bob Burkovich, Ed Kolano, and Marianne Pekor. Mary Catherine Conroy and Joe Jurinko represent the Sophomores, and Jackie Barclay and Scott Strednak represent the Freshmen. 66 Clubs C.A.P.E. Club The MISSION CLUB consists of students who volunteer to work on a variety of charitable projects. Under the direction of Sr. Margaret, the club has made table decorations for elderly Sisters, visited the Home for Crippled Children and made Halloween masks for the residents, co-ordinated the annual turkey basket project, and sponsored the Quing of Shamrocks fundraiser. Money raised by these activities is donated to various missionary works throughout the world. Clubs 69 70 Clubs The BAND and CHORUS are composed of hard working, dedicated, and talented students who want to perfect their musical skills while providing a source of entertainment for all. They produce two annual concerts, which are highlights of the school year — one during the Christmas season and one in the Spring. Giving direction, encouragement, and a great deal of time and effort to these groups are Sr. Serafma, Band Director, and Sr. Flora, Choral Director. Clubs 71 The members of the COMPUTER CLUB are volunteer student operators who run the daily cards through the school’s computer. Students who have been members for more than one year also enter and alter objectives for teachers and have various reports printed for them. The moderator, Sr. Mary Faith, coordinates the schedule and sometimes fills in for an absent operator. Row 1: Rosemary, Rosie, Karen. Row 2: Mary Catherine, Lori, Eileen, Anne, Peggy, Marianne. Creating a yearbook is a long and difficult process which requires the time, dedication, and cooperation of the staff members. But the real measure of a project’s quality is not in the hours of toil or number of problems. It is in the creator's ability to sit back, look at it and say, “I am proud!’' . . . WE ARE PROUD! Through St. Thomas’ sports program we learn to contribute as individuals to a team project. The girls’ and boys’ basketball teams and the T.I.P. program enable all of us to get a piece of the action. Whether on the playing field or cheering in the stands, we can all share in and help to boost school spirit. Being in competition with others teaches us that both defeat and success are necessary parts of the puzzle of life. ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ The Tomcat Intramural Program is an organized sports program which is designed to promote school spirit and to complement the varsity and physical education programs. It also provides the non-varsity player with an opportunity to participate in various sports. The mastermind behind T.I.P. is Mr. Jeff Flohr, alias the official Official. This T.I.P. year brought forth a drastic change in the teams. There is now a total of 8 teams — 4 female as well as 4 male teams. The much-improved squad celebrated their first victory in three years and provided much keener competition for their opponents than in past years. The team is assisted by varsity manager Cindy Polesnak, and J.V. managers are Sylvia Kopay, Susan Bandik, and Michelle Nadzan. Tomcats 95 Even though they often go unrecognized or unappreciated, the members of the faculty administration of St. Thomas are the ones who actually fit the final pieces of our puzzle together. With their support, we can now begin to see that the puzzle of life is not always an easy one to solve. Completion of the puzzle requires patience and dedication — qualities we seek in all members of the faculty administration. RETROSPECT presents FACULTY Sfv'i , Fitting the final pieces together. At the start of the new school year, we became aware of a few changes in our faculty. First of all, Sr. Mary Faith and Sr. Marlene began a new phase of Project P.E.R.S.O.N., with each one taking on new responsibilities. As an addition to the Religion Department, Fr. Dolan was assigned to be chaplain, a job which enables him to be of service to students by providing them with the opportunity of receiving the sacraments. In October, we said good-bye to Sr. Anastasia and hello to Mr. McLaughlin, a new addition to our Math Department.
