ST. THOMAS DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL BRADDOCK, PA Growing, changing, and maturing are inevitable processes of life — ones which we sometimes anticipate, sometimes dread, and almost always fail to appreciate. It may have escaped our notice, but each moment and each experience have merged within us to form totally unique persons. Although our uniqueness is evident now, we will continue to grow and build on what we have achieved. Throughout the following section we will share the thoughts and words of others, hopefully to help us see how we can affect others ... understand ourselves .. . continue to grow. - M.F. Selection is determined by faculty vote. This year, the students chosen to receive the award are MARLENE FABYANIC and R.J. PEKOR. In her four years at St. Thomas, Marlene has been actively involved in various clubs and organizations such as Upstart, National Honor Society, and Math and Science Clubs. This year she was RETROSPECT editor, and was also chosen to receive the BAUSCH AND LOMB AWARD lor excellence in science. R.J., too, has been a familiar figure in extracurricular activities. A T.I.P. captain and president of National Honor Society, he is also student director of the Senior play, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN. Congratulations to both for meriting this high honor. 22 UNDERCLASSMEN BACK: Dale, Joe, Dan, Leo, John, Pat. Paul FRONT: Bob, Katie, Michelle, Kathy, Ray The exhilarating feeling of being an upperclassman truly comes in the junior year. The excitement of initiation, of being a threatening force over the freshmen while laughing in good spirit is a memorable event. This excitement doesn't cool, because the ring ceremony and plans for the Junior Prom follow in rapid succession. When the night of gowns, tuxes, and dancing finally arrives, troubles are forgotten and all the hours of preparation seem well worth it. Academically, the junior year brings a host of new classes such as Microbiology and Chemistry, open to all who are willing to put forth the effort. Another test of confidence and achievement comes in the form of the PSAT. This gives some the opportunity to vie for a National Merit Scholarship. The junior year is the year to look towards the future and anticipate our continued growth. 24 . ...MIC ti © BACK: Kathy, Cheryl. Anita, Vicki, Diane. It's a time when you're sandwiched in between eager, excited freshmen and powerful, full-fledged juniors. You don't have much force around the school, but you make yourself known, just the same. Although there are a few minor inconveniences, there are some new and challenging experiences to explore. For instance. Chorus is open to all interested, willing sophomores. And you can take biology to help you develop your scientific potential. For the more industrious students, there's the chance to join the Computer Club. As a final tribute to seniors, sophomores plan and stage the Bon Voyage Dance. Sophomores are generally enthusiastic, bright, and bubbly. Sophomore year is an experience never to be forgotten. 30 bioloqy voyAqe dANCE . . . boN BACK: Steve. Ray. Terry. FRONT: Lorraine. Ranae. Tina, BACK: Ralph, Bob, Mike, Barry. FRONT: Tracie. Darryl, Butch, Tracy A foreboding excitement penetrates the crowd as they huddle together awaiting the inevitable. It's freshman initiation, and fear intermingled with the anticipation of becoming an accepted faction of the school is typical. Once encompassed in the circle of Saint Thomas, the freshmen can join in the normal chaos of events and organizations. The Intramural Program offers a wide variety of competition and is our excellent opportunity to become involved with upperclassmen. For those freshmen looking towards a more rewarding and difficult athletic goal, the junior Varsity squad of the Tomcats is a great starting point. Becoming acquainted with Project Person and Student Numbers may prove trying at first, but eventually the system of individual learning is accepted. This uniqueness, truly begun here, is a worthy philosophy to carry through life. 34 BACK: Terry, Mark, Kevin, Robert, Laura FRONT: Trade, Cheryl. ROBERT DUCH Headmaster Each day we meet with the familiar faces of those who make our graduation day possible. The teachers of St. Thomas teach us not only the subjects required for graduation, but also the subjects of human nature: thinking, loving, and living. They help us to overcome many obstacles and prepare us for the many more ahead. A teacher is an advisor, a philosopher, and a friend. Over the course of four years, teachers offer us the opportunity to grow as individual, responsible citizens. Pride is taken in the sharing of the many hopes, fears, and aspirations of both the students and faculty administration of St. Thomas. SR. MARY FAITH REANEY Vice-Principal Shorthand 40 MS. In retrospect, we can recall the days and nights of working while unconsciously pulling out our hair, and the premonition that insanity is slowly creeping up on us. Although these moments are forever seared into our memories, we leaf through this book and feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment in bringing it to you.
