The Alpha, the Omega; the Beginning, the End. Quite an easy way to summarize this senior year, bui only a minute expression of what being a senior REALLY means. No words could every fully express the depth of emotion each of us has felt — the apprehension, the confusion, the anxiety, the excitement. But above all. there exists the deep regret of leaving people we’ve come to know and love. Peering into the mirror of the past, we view ourselves entering the doors of St. Thomas as weak and immature adolescents exposed to a totally unique environment for the first time. But these four years have had a deeply impressionable effect on our lives. As we prepare to venture from the safe confines of these surroundings, we feel confident that we have the ability to cope with whatever situation life may offer us, for the faith others have had in us will be the strength and motivating force behind our endeavors. Though a way of life we have known for twelve long years is about to come to a close, we prefer to consider this a new beginning. We are approaching the crossroads of our lives — on the threshold of developing the person each of us yearns to be. And though we have reached the climax of our high school years, we are standing at the nadir of a new mountain in our lives, progressing ahead, but never abandoning the treasured influence of the friends we have made. So it is to this perpetual climb, this continual progression, that we dedicate this book. To surge onward will take strong will and determination, but the lasting memory of the moments we have shared together will serve to strengthen our endurance as we continue our climb to the summit of our lives. And so it is through not only photos and token souveniers that we relive April 4th and 5th, but through our own personal movie camera. This gem, as invaluable as the Hope Diamond, is our Memory. It is equipped with a guage for registering emotions, a zoom lens for finding and capturing action shots, and an accompanying tape recorder for adding dimension to the view. And, contrary to popular belief, the films only become clearer and more precious to us as they age. But in reminiscing about such a once in a lifetime happening, we, the Spirit of '76, should realize that the images of people and events that we ourselves carry will be the only answer to “Where Have They Gone?” The rousing, unsettling awareness that graduation is at last imminent should induce us to build a link with the past — a drawbridge we can let down when we feel a need to reassure ourselves of how far we have come. For, as any type of progress depends upon what has already been accomplished, so our advancement in life relies upon what we have to build on. 104 105 Ms. Angela Cuss “Esteem cannot be where there is no confidence; and there can be no confidence where there is no respect.” Giles Though we have in the past encountered teachers outside the classroom situation, rarely does our mind disregard that “WE” are separated from ‘THEM” by some ingrained subconscious barrier. Ms. Guss, it’s only when a person of authority finds the confidence within herself to relate, on a personal and open basis, that she is able to share not only her knowledge and experience, but HERSELF! And in our case, your accomplishment of destroying that “subconscious barrier,” has served to fortify the respect and esteem each of us feels for you.
