RETROSPECT Saint Thomas District High School Braddock, Pennsylvania 1974 NO MAN IS AN ISLAND, ENTIRE OF ITSELF; EVERY MAN IS A PIECE OF THE CONTINENT, A PART OF THE MAIN; IF A CLOD BE WASHED AWAY BY THE SEA, EUROPE IS THE LESS, AS WELL AS IF A PROMONTORY WERE, AS WELL AS IF A MANOR OF THY FRIENDS OR OF THINE OWN WERE; ANY MAN’S DEATH DIMINISHES ME, BECAUSE I AM INVOLVED IN MANKIND; AND THEREFORE NEVER SEND TO KNOW FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS; IT TOLLS FOR THEE. DEVOTIONS XVII JOHN DONNE (1573-1631) PHILANTHROPIST (philanthropy + -ist.), n. Specif.: (a) A lover of mankind; a benevolent friend of men; one devoted to human welfare, (b) A generous giver to education, charity, social work, etc.; a liberal benefactor. Dear Graduate (and all you young people who care), The future world needs you and depends on you. We, your elders, leave you a divided world that is not admirable. Be not an island unto yourself, but seek advice and learn from others. You must be freer than your elders were. You must return to the Gospels of love and the brotherhood of the Early Church. You must take risks and set new precedents. You must not be afraid of trying what has never been tried before; otherwise, you shall never be creative. You must not be afraid of authority. Youth, not authority, is the source of creativity. You must be proud, bold, and free if you wish to create. When finally authority intervenes, it is ordinarily more noble to obey than to disobey; and to obey with love, even if one feels that right is on one’s side, and even if authority has been employed unfairly. Halted in one direction, the energy of the Gospels seeks out another crevice for its growth. The mustard seed, finally, breaks its pots-patience is on the side of the Lord. Those motivated by self-love give up. Please do not give up in this century of blood and heroism. If ever some of us desired to live in a time when we might give our lives to justice, ours is such a time. Let us hope that many from among vou join with your brothers and sisters-join the few-who work always and everywhere for justice, peace, and eternal happiness. 6 SISTER MARY FAITH REANEY VICE-PRINCIPAL SENIOR MODERATORS MR. There is only one woman in the world and her name is All Women. There is only one child in the world and the child’s name is All Children. (Carl Sandburg) P.L.A.N. Programmed Learning According to Individual Needs OPINIONS SENIORS JUNIORS Positive Positive This may be the start of something great. For once, the student has a chance to take the initial step. It has been said that it is the property of true genius to question the constant, and with PLAN we may begin to accomplish this. PLAN will soon become the superior method of teaching in the future. This program makes one feel FREE in school; this is something many of us haven’t ever experienced in education. PLAN enables me to be a person who is free to choose and be responsible for myself and my work. It really makes YOU work! No one is pressuring the student and he may work comfortably at his own pace. If he can work at his own pace, the end result will have to be good. This system makes for an ideal relationship between student and teacher. This is a good pr()gra m edSaSPft enaS me to work according to my individual ability and needs; I can devote my efforts to specific aspects of a subject rather than merely touch upon superficial information. The choices of topics vary widely and there is something to suit everyone. We’re able to make full use of every classroom and all audio-visual equipment. The diversity makes learning more interesting. Free flow days are exceptional. I think this is great for the times when we need a change and when we need to concentrate our energies on one specific subject This system lets us work are learning. LOVE IT! I understanding of what we We have comfortable working conditions. (For next year, could we consider couches in classrooms?) This system gives one a chance to challenge oneself in how much one can accomplish in a given length of time. The student actually learns, rather than memorizes, for the sake of a test I l elieve that the PLAN Program shows that the students of St. Thomas are able to work both constructively and cooperatively with each other and with the teachers. PLAN made me realize that, in the future, no one will be behind me pushing me to get work done. I’ve realized the responsibility and will power it is going to Like to make it in the world after graduation. It allows me to Ik myself by letting me develop my own interests. I’m learning more this year than last year. I never thought learning could actually be enjoyable. It gives me a chance to find out what I know as an individual. Small group discussions are a good way of learning what our own biases are and we get more insight into what others feel about the same idea. The system helps in the GROWTH experience. Negative I am heavily dipping into the well of former knowledge and experience when working on an OLU. Negative After eleven years of another method, it is difficult to adjust to. It might l)e more beneficial if we had the entire year to complete a POS. Somehow, the quarters seem to limit us. Students with little or no self-motivation may get little accomplished. No social activities can have priority over PLAN work. Time is used so effectively that no one cares about others enough to help them. Public display of the printout can sometimes l e humiliating. Many kids are shy and cannot tolerate being individually instructed and corrected. Due to the error of the computer, tests are sometimes mismarked and the student must go thru the humiliation of seeing tested on the printout when, in reality, he didn’t fail the test at all. I think it is the lazy way out for teachers and students. Students tend to become jealous of one another concerning how many objectives the other person has completed. This brings into the picture the competition factor. I think that many of the students in the school are so busy complaining about PLAN that they aren’t really giving it a chance to work. Because there are no teachers constantly watching over us, we become easily tempted to get along by doing nothing. SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN Positive Positive I think thuL y JJwe evaluate PLAN we must take into consideration the people working] ithin the system. If there is a student who really wants to learn and us his time wisely, the new system couldn't be be tter. On the other fend, with a student that cannot be motivated by any means, the system will not work. It seems to be working here because most of our student, are in the former category. I can learn .better this way because my learning needs are met by individual attention. I assign myself homework and take tests when I feel I’m ready, not when someone else thinks I’m ready. I was always held back by slow learners. This hasn’t happened this year. . . PLAN has relieved the bon d .m of the regimented classroom. The indejwndence and freedom of choosing our own lessons will benefit us if we plan U enter college. What is most important is that it lowers ihe teacher-student ratio to a one to one basis Instead f always learning and considering the teacher’s opinion to 1)0 flawless, we get toiomuii; u oui own opinions. This is a new way of learning individualism and gaining maturity. This is exactly what is needed in school. Now I know what it’s like to conquer something! Because of this program, stude nts are graded as individuals and not graded in comparison to the rest of the class. For once, I feel important I retain more information with this method because I have to find the material myself. PLAN helped me to realize my own self worth. When you start out by being given credit for having ability, you really do produce. Negative A new system like this should be started with children in first grade. In this way, a student will slowly learn to be independent. We’ve always depended too much on the teacher, so this was a shock to the system. PI AN is the greatest educational process I have ever known and I’m very glad I have the privilege of using it during my first year here. I it will stav for many moire years to come so thapA can help other people like it nafc helped me. 1 am learning to use my time wis | I like PLAN because it gives the individual a chance to be on their own and also helps them to overcome their learning problems. You are a single person, instead of just something in a class. I now know what the goals are that I am striving towards. I like PLAN l ecause it teaches ME and not an image of me that a teacher might create. I appreciate being graded for the quality of my work as well as the quantity. PLAN creates a positive attitude towards learning and towards thinking on your own. With this system wre have no excuses for not learning. If a teacher isn’t available for help, another student is available. I like PLAN because it gives me more time to study and research. I am learning more than I did last year and am eager to go on with PLAN. Negative Independence is sometimes hindered by the interception of teachers. Sometimes the system is defied because a certain number of OLUs is assigned. It’s almost like saying, Take a number and please wait. Teachers are sometimes too helpful. I don’t like faculty computers. (I thought they were perfect.) I tend to get lazy when I work on my owrn. This system is supposed to allow me to work at my own rate. However, I slow down and I don’t worry because I am doing the best I can.’’ I am not doing the best I can and I need a push. . . . the mind is restless, turbulent, strong and unyielding. . . as difficult to subdue as the wind. (Bhagavad-Gita) 61 62 To understand is hard. Once one understands, action is easy. (Sun Yat-sen) DIVERSION (di-vur -shun), n. 1.
