RETROSPECT 1964 Saint Thomas District High School Braddock, Pennsylvania Dedication In the year 1960, the same year that we entered Saint Thomas High School, the first Catholic, John F. Kennedy, was elected to the office of President. At 44, he was the youngest man ever to hold that office. Yet John Kennedy was young not only in years but, more importantly, in spirit and in action. His vigor, tenacity, and perseverence were characteristic of youth. As such he provided us with a standard of imitation. John Kennedy exemplified Christian ideals. Consequently, we regard him not so much a great President as a great man. Increasingly, we grew to appreciate his personal conduct. He meant more to us than just a president; he became a part of all of us, and each one of us has felt a personal loss with his untimely death. It is with the deepest admiration and respect, then, that we, the class of 1964, dedicate our yearbook to the memory of the late John Fitzgerald Kennedy, first Catholic President of the United States. Letter to the Headmaster Reverend Leo G. Henry Dear Father Henry, We write this letter not as a farewell, nor as a thank you, but as an acknowledgment. Through our two years of association, we have grown more and more to depend on your advice and guidance. Occasionally, we did not take heed of your words, but as graduation approaches, we have begun to realize the meaning of them and to appreciate their value. We appreciate even more the fact that you live what you preach. Your personal dedication to see that each one of us reaches his goal has inspired us to work harder to fulfill our potential. We believe that your sacrifice has not been in vain, and will eventually see its fruits harvested. Gratefully yours, Class of '64 Theme Saint Thomas High School has provided os with many opportunities fo, personal develop-ment. Even though we have not yet begun to appreciate them, our days at Saint Thomas were not designed merely for intellectual growth. Just as adolescence is comprised of many factors, so too does high school accommodate with its varyingexperiences. Fore- most among these experiences is the realization of our considerable dependence on God. Each one of us has learned the significant value found in the virtue of Faith. Every time we say ”1 believe,” we possess the realization that, even with the human imperfections we encounter around us, especially among ourselves, there will always be that Absolute with Its unfailing guidance. Appropriately, therefore, we choose ”Credo” as our theme, with the hope that this word will have even deeper meaning in our lives. Sister Mary Victor tries to explain an alge bra problem to David Jumba. Mr. Hynes decides that math is not in his line. Miss Heil hands Kathleen Ebner her next assignment ... the Absentee List. a c u I t r Sister Mary Anthony and Mary Ellen Dougherty move fast to reach the deadlines. Sister Dolorita talks over newspaper business with Mr. Crowley and Joanne Blasko. Sister Mary Carmel smiles as she busily attends to her duties as vice-principal. Mr. Mazur and Miss Morowski teach Francis Navish the use of the balance. It's in the Bible ... That's what Sister Mary Nicholas and Mr. Giegrich tell Kathleen McLaughlin. Now where is that card?” Mrs. Olivo and Patricia Kotlowa hunt in earnest. Faculty Sister Vivian and Sister Fidelis try to explain to Maryanne Payne that Latin isn't all that bad. Bob Marko, History Honor Society representative, consults Sister Mary Carmel and Sister Marie Charles about plans for the next meeting. Mr. Clarence Wargo reads the schedule for intramural games to Jim Fatula. Another edition out! That's what Mary Ellen Man-gan, Sharon Kill, Thomas Szulc, Geraldine Downey, and Robert Marko look so relieved about. Shirley Valko, Patricia Zych, and Paula Zezza listen to Renee Walter and Margaret Szarmach explain the next step on the agenda. Albert Dzcrmejko explains the importance of column heads to the other newspaper members: Thomas Michlovic, Regis Sherer, Judith Nehilla, Maryanne Pvtka, and Donna Puz. Crucible A crucible is a large vessel used in the manufacturing of steel. The Crucible, our school paper, is, as it were, a melting pot of student and faculty opinion, ideas, and ideals. It is, in a sense, a medium for grinding out our opinions. The Crucible, dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, is published four times a year by the students of St. Thomas. The principles and policies of The Crucible are: to foster a Christian attitude in the student body, to bring school news of major and minor importance within reach of all students, to engage student interest and encourage a loyal school spirit, to reflect a unified student body functioning in a Catholic school, to give opportunity for students to express their opinions and ideas, and to provide opportunities for students interested in journalism. Jo Anne Blasko, Bernadette Sage, Robert Becker, and Christine Deiling are reviewing their hard work. Retrospect It has been a long, hard struggle preparing the 1964 yearbook, but it is finally finished and ready to be examined by all. We are all happy to have been a part in the making of this yearbook and are pleased by the effects of our efforts. The Retrospect is one of the most important undertakings of the senior class. It holds within its pages all the memorable events that we want to remember and records the faces of our friends. We have worked hard spending endless hours laboring over copy and typing up copy-sheets to make our Retrospect better than that of any previous class. The editors, James Fatula and Jo Ann Rocco, decide a plan for the next yearbook meeting. Carol Benes. Joanne Blasko, Barbara Bujakovski, and Cecilia Bonacci compromise on the pictures for the yearbook. Has Teresa Terrick finally found a layout? That is what Patricia Cusack and Theresa Cusack are smiling about. int McKmgin. Terrance Klazer, Darariry CTlanaell, and Jane Terhaako page through farmer yearbooks for suggestions.
