HOMASONIAN 1958 Ok at +9 may Lear tLe voice of Oliy praises, an A tJf „f Jt Ok won clerou J worL A Pi. 25 ■7 SAINT THOMAS HIGH SCHOOL BRADDOCK, PENNSYLVANIA The THOMASONIAN Ok at d) may Lear tLe voice of -Jhy praise and ted of ad dJLy wondrous works. Ps. 25 .. 7 The Voice of God has been transmitted to all men - sometimes as a mere whispering, sometimes through revelation, or then again through the prophets of the Old Law. No matter in what form the Will Of God has reached us, men of every age have given praise to the Voice in their humble way. It was at the appearance of the star that the Voice of God echoed forth from the lowly cave in the Person of Jesus Christ. The Divine Word undertook the mission of imparting God's Will to all. He labored among the faithful, instructing them, inviting them to Christianity. His very life was offered on the Cross as a sacrifice for the salvation of men. His sufferings were of infinite value meriting for the world graces without number and without measure. Through the centuries that followed, Christ’s institution - the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church - became Cod’s mouthpiece. The successors of Christ and His Apostles, obeying God’s command to teach all nations, proclaimed the Gospel to all parts of the earth. Our parents, as recipients of the true Faith, saw to it that the Voice was instilled in our souls. Through their loving care and sacrifice, they enabled us to attend a Catholic school where we reaped the benefits of a Catholic education. Here, our knowledge of God’s attributes, precepts, and mysteries was further developed. Our Faith was further enriched and our Christian principles were strengthened. It is then with grateful and sincere hearts that we dedicate the Thomason-ian of 1958 to our beloved parents who have made it possible for us to receive the gift of Faith. In the following pages of this yearbook, we shall endeavor to display the gifts of Cod implanted in us during these formative years. Now, as we are preparing to leave school and step into the future, we shall once more as a class unite in thanking God for the blessings bestowed upon us, raising our voices in praise of all His wondrous works. To Father Shields we acknowledge our gratitude. His efforts have proved untiring in providing us with the opportunity of growing spiritually, physically, and mentally at St. Thomas. His weekly instructions were particularly beneficial to our religious growth and development. Our only desire is to carry these ideals throughout our entire life. Our Oath er hath declared Pi. 43:2 It has been inspiring during our years at Saint Thomas to have had the assistance of Father Drap. His presence at the rallies and games has been encouraging to the students and the members of the team. He has not only been a great help to us in our daily life, but he has been an inspiration to us in all things spiritual. Through the years we will always be grateful to Father for all his kindness and help during our high school years. 7 Sister Mary Grace, O.P. Music Sister Marie Karen, O.P. Art Sister M. Eunice, O.P. One of the oldest organizations in Saint Thomas, the Science Honor Society, is composed of juniors and seniors interested in the complex mechanism of science. At the honor meetings, which are held twice a month, these relentless investigators of scientific phenomena exercise their knowledge and skill. Members of the society look forward to the day when being a scientist is no longer a dream but a reality. The Periodic Chart enables Science Honor Members, James Holmes, Leroy Schnaubelt, Timothy Lavelle, Patrick McNulty, Paul Buzard, Anatalia Scripp, Ronald McLaughlin, Jean Zam-bron, Richard Fantazier, and Joyce Platz, our future scientists, to balance many difficult equations. The Mathematics Honor Society consists of lads and lasses who earn their titles through hard work and study. Membership requirements are a high scholastic rating and keen interest. Members of the Mathematics Honor Society Mary-anne Matta, Daniel Krejdovsky, Helen Thompson, Leonard Baczek, Joann Nicholas, and John Wallo have their problems well in hand, or so it seems from their pleased expression. Loraine Modrak, Bernard Weigold, Roslyn Terhanko, David Olsa-vicky, Lawrence Furry, Patricia Bigley, Annette Fedak, Philip Shank, Robert Wolk make plans for the May Classical Honor Meeting to be held at St. Thomas. The Classical Honor Society has a twofold purpose. First, to strive for a fuller knowledge of the Latin and Greek classics; secondly, to diffuse this knowledge toothers. That the society fulfills its purpose is evident to those who visit the annual Latin Festival held at Buhl Planetarium. Meetings held monthly at different schools include an educational and social program. Only the fortunate Latin students who maintain a high scholastic average are eligible for membership in the Classics Societas. The Modern Language Honor Society, although still in its infancy, has been making noteworthy strides through the lively interests of its members and moderators. The 1958 Chapter of St. Thomas High School is anticipating with enthusiasm its participation in this year’s spring activities. A trip to Washington, D. C. and a visit to the Burlitz School of Languages are two highlights of the year. Richard Zula and Ronald Sabol explain Spanish Chart to Marlene Onderko, Rose Marie Brennan, Mary Ann Kohan, and Annette Banasek. 45 Junior and senior Fatima members listen attentively to words of wisdom from Father Shields. The Fatima Club is Active in Our High School In this Twentieth Century in which we live, with its materialism and false philosophies, it is so easy to lose sight of the real goal for which we are here. In order that we may give some serious thought to this all important task of working out our salvation in the way God has planned for us, our Bishop has requested that vocation clubs be established in all of the high schools of the diocese. Here at St. Thomas, our girls join the club as freshmen at a formal reception and Communion breakfast held early in the school year. A social hour is held each month, with a different class taking charge. Vocation skits, fashion shows, movies, and lectures are only a few of the programs presented so far. To climax this year’s activities, we hope to plan a pilgrimage to one of the nearby shrines in honor of the centenary of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Fatima Club at Saint Thomas includes all high school girls. The purpose of this club is to spread devotion to Our Lady of Fatima by attending Mass and receiving Holy Communion on the First Saturday of the month. The monthly social meeting consists of a play - sometimes an original skit - produced by our girls. Sisters Vivian and Thomas More are the group directresses. Freshmen and sophomore Fatima members prepare for Forty Hours Procession. 46 Grace Stobey, Robert Wolk, Catherine Mroziak, and Geor-gine Kasardo, seated at the desk, proudly display offerings which reflect the generosity of the Mission Club members. The Federation of Catholic High School Students, along with its other functions, sponsors the Diocesan History Honpr Society. The monthly meetings provide a natural outlet for the students interested in Social Studies. These gatherings enrich their background for a better understanding of the current problems in the world. Some of the aims of the society are to foster interest in America’s heritage, Catholic traditions, and Western Pennsylvania. Toclimaxtheyear’sactic-ities, the society conducts a tour to a particular site of historical significance. The command of Christ to “Go teach all nations” is being carried out by the student body of St. Thomas. Although they are not going to foreign countries, nevertheless, they are sending others by their prayers and sacrifices. They help the missions by giving school supplies, stamps, and at Christmas time, they collect and prepare toys for children. The St. Thomas Mission Club has been outstanding for its contributions to the Propagation of the Faith. One of the duties of Eileen Vargo, Stephanie Jumba, Mary E. Hughes, Marianne Me Laughlin, Jo Ann McMuldren, PatriciaHook, Georgianna Gaspar, Marlene Connelly, Mary Alice Curran, Carol Eaglesome, and Francis Lennon is to collect mountains of stamps for the missions. Kenneth Tronsberg points out historical facts to Carol Eaglesome, Mary O’Rourke, Bernadette Bower, Marianne McLaughlin, James Rost, Stanley Os-trawski, Donna Lee Pusk-ar, Donald Dudas, and Timothy Dalton. Ruth Touhill, Shirley McGivern, and Pat Matelan review shorthand notes while Eileen Vargo and Betty Ann Miggin study the bookkeeping chart. The Business Honor Society helps in bringing all business honor students together to discuss methods used in the business world. The students, aided by their teacher moderators, prepare programs, which aid them in learning office techniques. One particularly interesting and instructive project was the trip to the l.B.M. plant conducted this spring. The diligent hands of Linda DiLu-centi, Francis Lennon, Walter Seng, Dolores Macko, Michael Balog, Mary Ann Novack, and Robert Fan-tazier are making sure that each stroke counts. Diane Harnicar and Elaine Mospan were absent from this picture. “Music, Maestro, please! echoed in the conservatory from Robert Wolk, Joyce Platz, Anatalia Scripp, Denise Hornak, Carol Jean Suley, Betsey Swisdak, Melanie Mizerak, Catherine Mroziak, Catherine Dun-levy, Helen Thompson, and Loraine Modrak after Jean Zambron requested an unusual concerto. One of the newest clubs introduced in St. Thomas is the Musart Club. The purpose of this club is to bring together students who possess a keen interest in music and art. Through this organization, students become acquainted with their respective fields. Concerts, discussions, and performances are a source of inspiration to the members. These activities serve as an impetus to our students to accomplish a greater perfection in these arts. 48 Thoughtfully planning the Red Cross activities are: Lucille Lemak, Josephine Baine, Edward Stim, John Repasky, and James Rost. “A door is always opened to those in need.” These words describe the policy of theREDCROSS. Our school is represented by four seniors who attend monthly meetings at the RED CROSS CENTER. Programs are planned at these meetings. A benefit show for the veterans was one of our activities for the RED CROSS this year. Recently added to the many societies of St. Thomas High School is the Keystone Jets, an engineering club affiliated with the engineering school of Michigan State University. The Jets, having a membership of forty-one, have had several guest speakers and have gone on four field trips. The future programs of the Jets promise to be very interesting. It makes itself heard in practically all of the speech and debate contests held on the local or national level. Its motto -“Better Catholic leaders through better Catholic speakers” - is an ideal of every Thomasonian. Each month the students are given an opportunity to engage in a district tournament. But as the season draws to a close, all eyes are turned to the National Grand Tournament. Winners of the district semi-finals may participate in this national contest. National competition is the reward of hard work and perseverance of all the members. This year its voice has made itself heard as far as the nation’s Capital, where the debate team has been invited to enter a tournament at Georgetown University. Such competition is the proving ground for tomorrow’s Catholic leaders. A circle ol smiles proved to be an interesting pose by Helen Thompson, Melanie Miz-erak, Mary Pat O’Rourke, Myrona Videc, Arlene Mauck Donna JeanCverko, Catherine Mroziak, Georgint Kasardo, Mary Ann Matta, Maureen O’Halloran, Joann Nicholas, and Barbara Motkowski members of the Speech Club.
