T-H-E 1957 T -H O M -A S O N ST. THOMAS HIGH SCHOOL BRADDOCK, PENNSYLVANIA PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS 1957 ST. THOMAS HIGH SCHOOL 4 DEDICATION With grateful hearts, we look back on our four happy years at Saint Thomas High School. We ask our Mother Mary to thank our Creative Father, our Saving Redeemer, and our Sanctifying Spirit for all the help given us in these fruitful years. As we stand on the threshold of life, we implore our Mother to be ever mindful of our needs and to pray to the Triune God for us, so that we may be able to conquer all the difficulties we shall encounter. With these sentiments, we, the Seniors of 1957, humbly dedicate this yearbook to the Most Holy Trinity through Mary. 5 OUR PASTOR A familiar sight to all of us every Monday morning is Father Shields standing in front of our class prepared to give his weekly religious instructions. No matter what the weather may be, we never fail to see this zealous priest smiling and ready to teach us the word of God. Although we are not all members of his parish, he has extended to each of us the same fatherly interest. He has been both a friend and advisor, admonishing and encouraging us through these years of Christian training. “Receive Holy Communion weekly” is the frequent advice he gives. He has instilled in our hearts a love for the truths and mysteries of our Holy Faith. While aspiring to reach the high level of Christian ideals set before us by our beloved priest, we shall always remember his untiring efforts in developing our spiritual and intellectual welfare. With these sentiments in mind, we the Senior Class, express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to our pastor, Father Shields. OU R ASSISTANT PASTOR When we returned to school at the beginning of our sophomore year at St. Thomas’, we learned that we had a new assistant pastor, Father Drap. Since that day he has been both our leader and friend. His affable manner and unfailing good humor has won the confidence of all the students. We know that Father is always willing to give freely of his time and advice whenever we need it. Whether we are leading in victory or trailing in defeat, he is always there encouraging us. Because of his priestly guidance and friendly interest in our school and athletic activities, our basketball and baseball teams have steadily improved. We know that wherever we shall go, we shall never find a friend more cheerful, more patient, or more willing to help us than is Father Drap. Father Francis Shields Sister M. STUDENT COUNCIL KENNETH WILLMOT After an exciting two-day campaign, Kenneth Willmot received the honor of being the first president of the Student Council at Saint Thomas High School. With the honor came the responsibility of presiding at all meetings of the Student Council and bringing to the attention of the students all matters of school interest. Kenneth, who came to us from Saint Mary Magdalene School in Homestead, is an excellent student. His intense interest in mathematics and science has inspired him to seek a career as a chemist or physicist. We students offer to Kenneth our thanks for leading the Student Council of Saint Thomas’ to success. EVERYONE IS GOING TO THE GAME. Standing: Robert Wolk, Leonard Baczek, Raymond Moxley, Michael Fallon, Casey Kusaj, Arlene Mauck, Dorothy Paharik, Madeline Gimera. THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE STUDENT COUNCIL SPEAKS. Of the students, by the students, and for the students is the government set up by the Student Council--the most important organization in our school. Early in the school year the Council was organized through the efforts of our faculty and the entire student body. Comprised of approximately forty students, the Council aims “to provide a means for student participation in school government, to promote and control student activities, to foster school spirit, to develop good citizenship and Catholic leadership, to assure membership in the Federation of Catholic High Schools of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and to further its activities, and to promote the general welfare of our school.” Since the first formal meeting we have progressed steadily. Assuming the responsibility of hiring buses for away games and devising a plan to enable students to use the library during class hours are some of the activities accomplished so far. FORENSIC LEAGUE Left to Right, Lee Schnaubelt, Lawrence Furry, Dorothy Kuzy, Joyce Platz. “Better Catholic leaders through better Catholic speakers” is the motto of the Catholic Forensic League, the speech and debate club in the diocese. To fulfill this end the league was formed in 1947, one of the first Honor Societies organized in the diocese. Since its inception, Saint Thomas students have been most active in this organization. The speech season begins each year in early October and ends usually in May. Each month a speech and debate tournament is held with one of the high schools acting as host. At these tourneys the students compete with other speakers and are judged according to a point system. A beginner must earn twenty-five points to receive his first degree, the Degree of Merit. He then advances to the Degree of Honor, to the Degree of Excellence, and finally to the Degree of Distinction, thehighesthonor given. A speaker must work hard and really be superior in his ability to merit these degrees. The goal of every speech student is to participate in the district finals and eventually in the national tournament. To be eligible for the nationals, the student must be a winner in his own district. This year the national finals will be held in Philadelphia. Medals, trophies, and even scholarships are awarded at these events. Besides these diocesan events, each year some of the Thomasonians participate in the American Legion, the Hurst, and other nationwide contests. “ATTENTION PLUS 46 First Row: Left to Right: Marianne McLaughlin, Maureen O’Halloran, Barbara Motkowski, Maryanne Matta, 'Georgine Kasardo, Dorothy Paharik. BASKETBALL After four years of being a doormat in the Catholic Basketball League, the Tomcats have finally managed to forge ahead in the standings. Even though title chances are slim, the boys are playing all-out to upset the league leaders. Bob Pearce and Mike Fallon have returned to play their last year for St. Thomas. Bob Cowell and Jerry Auld have been top flight substitutes giving Coach Larry Mannion two good reserves to call on. Three Juniors — Bill Doran, Chuck Bye, and Jim Collins -- along with Pearce and Fallon round out the first five. Other substitutes are Pat Fallon, Mike Mudry, and Ed Neff from the Junior Class, and Jim Tomasic, a sophomore. 55 Jerry Auld WHO’S GOING TO GET THE REBOUND? The 1957 edition of the Tomcats' baseball team has been bolstered by the return of five senior veterans, with a host of fine underclassmen including several promising freshmen. Jerry Auld will return to keep up his fine play in centerfield. Ernie Kuban, who played shortstop last year, will give second base a whirl. Behind the plate, Tom Jones will again return catching for “Golden Arm”, Bob Pearce. Jack Quinn will also be back in the outfield. These five make a strong nucleus for the Tomcats' chances for a title.
