CAROL MEDVIS RONALD VLASATY 23 Sixty strong, the Juniors found themselves looking forward to their last year at St. Thomas, but bent on enjoying every minute of this year. Room 304 lost Sister M. Austina to gain Sister M. Rosaire the second semester. Sister Sheila guided Room 301 with a steadiness that precluded failure of any kind. Collecting enough money to give the Prom was the theme of the first months of school. Enjoying the Prom in anticipation and reality was the chief occupation of the spring months. Remembering its glories and rose-colored moments wove the dream-like texture of May and June. Then suddenly the year’s end had come and we were looking forward again! They are the aspirations of the Priests and Sisters concretized. These stand-outs must be Catholics who are frequently seen at the altar.rail, and who attend the devotions held for the student body. They must be truly devoted to our Lady. Students to the level of their ability, they must also be courteous, cooperative and generous. Friendly with all their classmates, they are completely loyal to their school. Too, they must be humble enough to know that they can't reach the Ideal without God's grace. Elected this year as the most nearly perfect Thomasonians were James Conroy and Geraldine Kmetz. 35 Sitting: Kerry O’Malley Joseph Pytka Pat Palombo Bob Tananis Martin Coyne Standing: Annette Sichitano Gerry Kmetz Betty Lou Varacalli Mary Ellen Vlasaty Richard Misage Joan McCarthy Thomasonian Staff Upper Photo: Pat Palombo Mary Ellen Vlasaty Betty Lou Varacalli Lower Photo: Mary El len Katul ik Betty Gal lagher Bernice Banyas HISTORY HONOR SOCIETY BUSINESS CLUB in of mosT holv LATIN HONOR SOCIETY First Row: P ierino Martel I i Shirley McGivern Marlene Ondercho Patricia Kmetz Beverly McMullen Helaine Dojonovic Phyllis Miller Valerie Burke Second Row: Josephine Baine Aniceta Welsh Mary Ann Kohan Ruth Touhill Anatal ia Script L inda Frankl in Jean Zambron Carolyn Purtell Joyce Platz Third Row: Edward Neff Robert Wolk Thomas McDonough James Tracey Charles Bye Anthony Spadaro James Rost Sitting: Joan Curtis Annette Sichitano Vera Connel I Ray Koscho Betty McMahon Standing: Peggy Crossey Mary Margot Pesta Joyce Rothrauff David Bones Bob Cowell Cecilia Bower John Baird Lucille Joyce Theresa Popovic Betty Lou Varacalli John Solka Gertrude Blasko Honors Scroll EXCEPTIONALLY able youth certificates Ronald Egnitz, Joseph Pytka, Norma Trepak ST. The Prom That evening of evenings, enchanted as a dreamland, full of stardust, little white clouds, and soft music! The time when everything seems perfect, no matter how many things go wrong; when everything and everybody appears different from the way they usually do. The boys are gentlemen; and the girls are ladies in rustling petticoats, sweet smelling flowers and dreamy pastel gowns. It is a day that seems to take an eternity to arrive, seems to pass in a moment, but is remembered for a lifetime. The corsage, the appearance at the Convent, the first time on the dance floor, picture taking, the Grand March, crowning of the Queen, and all the other events combine to make the Prom an evening of Moments to Remember. Holy Mary, watch over each one of the Class of '56 now and bring us safely home to heaven at last. 57 Years of Grace It was on that warm morning of September, 1952, that the Class of '56 first assembled at the doors of our never-to-be-forgotten school. Saint Thomas. Shyly we went into our assigned homerooms and were greeted by Sister Alberta, Sister Jeanette, and Sister Laurentia. While we were getting into the routine of high school, initiation loomed over us like a black cloud. Having survived the initiation, we began to plan for our square dance at Thanksgiving. Basketball helped make the winter months pass swiftly. With spring in sight, we could hardly wait until our first South Park Picnic which met all our expectations even though it rained. Filled with anticipation for our sophomore year, we each went our own way to enjoy the summer months. As sophomores, we came back ready to struggle with our books and harass the freshmen. Again this year we were to be divided into three homerooms with our teachers Sister Alberta, Sister Edwina, and Sister Sheila, who would lead us through the year so capably. We were experts in Latin by now, but geometry and biology were c ji c!rMenges. The first part of the year breezed by with work and play going hand in hand giving us a well-rounded school life. Our big social event was the Initiation Dance by which we took revenge on the poor freshies. The arrival of Christmas brought our traditional winter dance with Rita Klein, a wonderful representative of our class, reigning as Snow Queen. All our activities kept us busy, and soon spring was here bringing us warm weather, spring fever, and our South Park Picnic. The day of the picnic was ideal not being dampened by the rain and everyone had a wonderful time. With the picnic over and final exams a reality, we realized that our sophomore year was now nothing more than a memory. Looking forward to that first prom and filling our minds with ideas for the North and South Park Picnics, we climbed into our junior year. Under the guidance of Sr. Mary Laura and Sr. M. Sheila, we added to our knowledge of religion, English, history, and let us not forget Sister Ignatia Marie's physics class—Where's the one-gram weight? This was a year of speed. How long would it take us to raise money for the prom? Who would be first to have thirty experiments completed? Who would get their 60 wpm shorthand pin? And attached to all these questions was a barrel of fun and success. The event never to be forgotten was our Junior Prom, Younger Than Springtime. In spite of the rain and the date being Friday the thirteenth, all went well. 58 With the arrival of June, we were looking forward to the Junior-Senior Picnic at North Park. Providing St. Ignatia Marie would cooperate with the physics marks, Sr. Sheila with the shorthand, and Sr. Laura with the history, this picnic would be the last time we would be considered juniors. On September 8, 1955, we entered our old stamping grounds once more, but this time as gallant seniors. We were happy to find Sister Marie Bernadette and Sister Ignatia Marie as our homeroom teachers. Chemistry, advanced algebra, and bookkeeping proved to be interesting and at times rather complicated. Our beginning days were filled with raising money for the yearbook, a big project. Then started the long hours put in by the Thomasonian staff that made our yearbook one of which we are extremely proud. After Christmas the mid-term exams turned out to be the much-dreaded battery tests. Along with spring came thoughts of the prom. South Park Picnic, senior banquet, and finally graduation. On June 3, we reached our goal. Our four years spent at Saint Thomas were truly years of grace. Along with the help and guidance of our Priests and Sisters, we learned how to make the most of our high school life using our talents and abilities to the best advantage. 59 PATRONS Rev. J. P.
