1953 tnuati ST. THOMAS HIGH SCHOOL BRADDOCK, PENNSYLVANIA ‘Dedication Clap hands with festal joy, 0 holy people, And honor the Virgin’s shrine. For there the picture of Our Lord’s great Mother Shines gracious and serene. — 16th century Under your care and guidance during the last four years, Dearest Mother, we have advanced in grace and knowledge. Now the time has come to write the final paragraph in the first chapter of our Book of Life, and begin work on a new and even greater one. In the past, you have been our inspiration, the harbor of our hopes, a worthy basis for our faith and trust, and the foundation of our plot. We shall never forget the help you have always given us. In this new chapter we shall continue to call on you for help, comfort and guidance, realizing that you will lead us safely home across a sea made restless by troubles, fears and doubts. These are the reasons that we dedicate this final paragraph to you — Our Mother, Our Confidence. REVEREND FRANCIS SHIELDS Pastor The unceasing efforts and Christ-like patience of Father Shields, pastor and instructor of St. Thomas, have won for him the love, honor, and respect of the class of 1953. Not only through his weekly instructions, but also by the saintly example of his priestly life have we found the key that will open the door to a holy and fruitful way of living. Father, a shepherd of Christ, has once again brought to another flock of St. Thomas seniors the realization that peace and happiness depend upon things eternal. 4 T e ‘Ideal 7 6 tt44Q Ua t The Ideal Thomasonian possesses those vital qualities which make a good Catholic. A frequent communicant, he is embodied with honor, courage, leadership, scholarship, and reliability. Trustworthy at all times, he takes part willingly in all school activities. Those first days were spent in meeting new friends, getting acquainted with the Sisters, and becoming lost on our way to classes. After overcoming these obstacles, we soon were faced with freshman initiation. Thanks to the Sisters and a few sympathetic sophomores, we emerged from the ordeal in one piece. November and December revealed to us that wood is stronger and harder than flesh when the freshman-class skating parties were held at the skating rink. Soon after Christmas vacation, there were mixed reactions among the pupils when we came to school one morning and found that the school had been on fire the night before. Two wonderful free days resulted. The rest of the year found us making projects for the Latin Festival, and having fun at the Friday night dances in the extra-curricular department. Soon after the annual South Park picnic, our freshman year came to an end with many happy memories and left us looking to the next school year. The first important event ot our sophomore year was the initiating of the new freshmen arrivals. After the merrymaking, we labored scholastically with protractor and compass, trying to understand our introduction to geometry. In biology, we undertook an extensive study of man and beast. The school supply press was well taken care of by J. Bolger, S. Fenner and R. Spelman, through whose pooled efforts the press was a financial success. In a very short time, our second year drew to a close and we had reached the half way mark in our stay at St. Thomas High. Return to school brought us a surprise. We discovered that our class now formed two groups and the personnel had been changed. Much midnight oil was burned in our individual homes keeping up with our studies in the newly acquired chemical and physical sciences. It happened more than once in our lab periods that the room would resound with the noise of a minor explosion, followed by a not-too-pleasant odor. At Christmas time, due to a dazzling and successful benefit dance. we were able to raise enough money for the Prom in May. It was in that month that graceful Junior Misses with lovely corsages were seen escorted by kniehtlv voung men to the Junior Prom at the Edgewood Country Club. With the arrival of the final exams, three years had quietly slipped by and only one precious year remained for us at St. Thomas. St. Thomas is notably active in the Catholic Forensic League of Pittsburgh. The Class of 1953 is honored in having two talented members in its group — Doris Lee Heil and Annette Berilla who have both merited the Degree of Distinction in the League. September, 1952, was the day we commenced the final and all important year at our Alma Mater. That year found us very active in curricular as well as in extra-curricular activities. The Mission Society students were busy collecting stamps, while other students were occupied by the Honor Societies: history, science, and Latin. In the field of sports, outstanding players were F. Popies, R. Spelman, T. Barth and R. Garrity in basketball, and W. Hart, J. Hamill, T. Barth and R. Garrity in baseball. In weekly sessions of bowling at Wagner’s Bowling Alley on Thursdays, J. Naccarato and C. Devine emerged as high scorers. J. Misage, N. Swersey, F. Popies, M. C. Beighley, S. Cupak, D. Motkowski, T. Wilczek and J. Prendergast contributed their skills in assembling a yearbook of superior quality. In May, plans for graduation brought us to the realization that our stay at St. Thomas High was soon to come to a close. Our four years at St. Thomas are the foundations on which we are to build our adult lives. , With the grace of God and the training of Father Shields and the Dominican Sisters, we trust that these foundations will be strong enough to bear the problems of the outside world into which we are now going. St. Thomas High will remain in our hearts forever as a symbol of spiritual and cultural principles guiding us through the years to our goal — Heaven. 48 0 Blessed Virgin, our Mother and Queen! 0 Dove most pure and Spouse Divine!
