Under the guidance and supervision of the Sisters, we survived the fatal day of initiation. Recovering completely, we established a new precedent in door prizes, a live turkey, given at our own Thanksgiving party. Scholastically, debating season discovered M. Meindl, N. McDonough, W. Metzger, and John Arnold, rivaling the upper classmen for points. Top honors at the Buhl Latin Festival were awarded to G. Meindl, C. Devlin, and J. Arnold. Under the shrewd business management of C. Gentile, the school supply press reaped huge profits. May 28, 1949--Rain fell, but our spirits were not dampened at our first annual South Park excursion. We concluded the year with happy memories and joyful expectation of our future years. Dimmed hall, black-clothes figures, flashing sabres, fearful freshmen faces presented a spectacle as the class of '52, increased in number, initiated the new arrivals. After the frolicking, many a soph brow furrowed over our introduction to angular mathematics. In biology, several goldfish met an untimely end by means of a compass point. Again our class captured honors at the Buhl, with M. Meindl and M.E. Qualey chosen as Latin virgins. Unexpected vacation days were enjoyed due to a slight conflagration in the school. Lo, and behold, the underclassmen phase of our high school years had come to an end. Segregated—boys from girls—we commenced our junior year. With minor blowups and sulphur odors, we almost succeeded in raiding the school of students. Due to the big snow, once again we vacationed at our homes. Plans for our dazzling benefit dance went on in spite of the snow. On December 27, through snow and ice the students gathered to enjoy the dance of the year , held to raise money for the May Prom. May saw the blossoming of Junior Belles in filmy gowns and fragrant corsages, as they attended the Junior Prom with their gallant escorts. June 7—Class clowns had heyday at our first North Park Picnic. Three years coming to a close found embedded in our hearts a loyal love for our dear St. Thomas. September 4, 1951.—As we entered our beloved school, we noticed that dazzling changes had been effected in the school hall, under the artistic direction of our senior artist, Donald Baracca. The new faculty member, Reverend Bertoline, revolutionized the teachings of Religion and P.O.D. Also, never before has any senior class been able to boast of so many poets and essayists, due to the student development in composition. A year book to surpass all others was assembled by Pat Gilkey, our editor, Robert Caulfield , G. Meindl, R. Barth, H. Slonska, D. Baracca, and our efficient senior secretaries. In the field of sports, R. Onderko, R. Deutsch, and R. McGivern , through their vitality, sparked the spirit of our basketball team. Thursday evenings found us gracing Wagner's Bowling Alley. 1951 saw a restoration of the Thomasonian Newspaper which was an enthusiastic success. Seniors were active in many Honorary Societies: history, science, and latin. Donald Mazikwas elected first president of the newly formed Business Club. Through the tireless efforts of Bob Caulfield and Tom Fabyanic funds were solicited to finance a newly organized baseball team. Graduation plans are the only sad note in our glorious senior year. As we leave St. Thomas, we beg our Sweet Jesus that the happiness and joy we found at St. Thomas may not end at our departure, but be with each of us forever. -50- Our IJciterda y y r R. DEUTSCH R. Dec. 2G, 1951 THANKS, THOMASONIAN CLUB IDEAL THOMASONIANS ELECTED GOMMENDABLE NEW VENTURE While Bincere gratitude has always been in the heart of every student at St. Thomas for the wonderful efforts of the Thomas -onian Club, no concrete appreciation has ever been manifested. The sole purpose of this article is to say Thanks, Thomasonians, for your support. The students are thankful for the financial assistance given to the basketball teams, the commercial department, the speech and debate clubs, and the senior banquet. A feeling of pride envelopes the students when they realize the aim of the organization. The advantages the Thomasonians have made possible to the school will never be forgotten by our grateful student body. NEW MEMBERS OF THE FACULTY Invading the halls of St. Thomas, a new influence prevails--black hair, and a black cassock, serious countenance easily provoked to a vide grin and a gilt marked by a determination rivaling that of Caesar's, characterize our new faculty member. Class instructions are punctuated by a series of Huhs and He's on the ball. Psychological effects, meaningful gestures and weird diagrams are employed frequently by this master of the arts to make his point clear. Although he has been at St. Thomas only a short time, Father Bertollne has completed many projects for the benefit of the students. Before coming to St. Thomas, Father Bertollne taught at Central Catholic High, St. Vincent Prejg, and St. Vincent College. He received his B .8 .degree at St. Vincent C611 ge, and Master of Arts degree from the University of Pittsburgh before entering t. Francis Seminaryp Continued oo page k) From the nominations of the students of the senior class, the high school faculty chose: ROBERT BARTH and PATRICIA GILES Ideal Thomas onians. These students received the honor on the basis of outstanding Catholicity, scholastic ability, cooperative spirit, and participation in school activities. Congratulations, Bob and .Pat: SENIOR PARTY Dancing, refreshments, and entertairunaot provided by Senior wits will highlight the class party on Thursday afternoon, December 20. Effervescent soda pop we're sure will produce bubbles of good cheer in senior hearts. The chairmen on committees for this party are Nancy McDonough , Refreshment; Mary Meindl, Entertainment; and John Banyas, Clean-up. YEARBOOK Once again it is time to start work on the yearbook. This year's staff of the THOMASONIAN have been discussing publishing companies, pictures, ads, and money. The annual yearbook drive was opened the first of November. ARE YOU CO OPERATING? The sole purpose of the Mission Club is to aid the missions all over the world. You may help the missions with little or no sacrifice. A few cents contributed to the fund will not bankrupt you. There are other ways of helping besides giving money. Bring in old beads no matter what the shape or size may be. Bring in cancelled stamps. Be sure to contact a local-mission club delegate to learn how to cut these stamps. me. First, ne asked my name; then, he mentioned a funeral that he was to attend the following morning There was no way of getting there, unlees I would take him. The way he said that, with a smeer and a laugh made my body shiver. Unconsciously, I agreed to take him,not realizing how foolish I was. I could not take my eyes from this devili6h-looking creature that now placed his ice-3 ike body next to mine. Chills passed through my -eins. He talked a great leal. In all hi6 conversation the subject was DEATH. I suppose he was thinking about the funeral In the morning. Near the -ad of the drive, I asked who the poor fellow was who was being buried. His slanted eyes looked deep into my fearful ones. I was petrified at his anaer. (To be continued.) C ONf-ORTO The Ac-ociation for the Preservation and Protection of Senior Latin Students was formed to prevent too much homework from being given to this rare and vanishing specie of Latin students. Since this is such a select group, a few requirements aie necessary before one can enter the Society. They are: 1. Be a Senior. 2. Be stu fyinr Virgil Kill a lion in hard to hand conbat. li. Run 100 yards over red-hot coals in nine seconds. 5 Have the Ac:, icd memorized. There is some talk of lessening the entrance requirements, since two hundred and sixty-four aspirants to the society have met unfortunate and untimely deaths in the process of gaining membership. At present there are thirty-two members in the society, sixteen of tiorr. have boon admitted to the A.P.P. of S.L.S. post mortem, having passed the entrance requirements but failed to live from their aftereffects. Onderko -57- EaUall Once again, an unprecedented activity has been introduced into the history of St. Thomas High. Through the bountiful co-operation of the Thomasonian Club, a baseball team will be fielded this spring. Our hopes are high for a winning season, and we expect St. Thomas to be numbered in the ranks of the baseball powers of this district in the future . We, the student body, express our deepest gratitude to the Thomasonian Club for bringing another fine sport to St. Thomas. Robert Caulfield and Thomas Fabyanic, with the student council, persuaded Father Bertoline to form a bowling league at St. Thomas. Aided by Father, therefore, in October the seniors and juniors organized the league which consists of six teams; namely, YALE, COLUMBIA, CORNELL, HARVARD, PENN STATE, and PRINCETON. Captains of these teams are, respectively: Robert Caulfield, Martin Nee, William Metzger, Edward Haberle, Regis Kollar, and James McCarthy. The COLUMBIA TEAM, captained by Martin Nee, leads the league having won twenty-seven games, and lost three. Martin, also, holds the highest individual score. The bowling league, besides enjoying a new experience in the field of sports, found bowling night a time of sheer fun. The bowling season ended in May followed by a banquet. a Irons Reverend Francis Shields Reverend Vincent Bertoline Reverend Leo J. Beck Brother John Boyle, S. J.
