The THOMASONIAN The THOMASONIAN The THOMASONIAN Ol’R LADY OF FATIMA “There is a great delight in her friendship, inexhaustible riches in the wotks of her hands...” Wis 1 18 We, ike Class of 1946, solemnly dedicate our year kook to our Lady of l'atima, Ambassadress Extraordinary from tke City of God. REVEREND FRANCIS SHIELDS Pastor The THOMASONIAN REVEREND DONALD O'NEIL Assistant The THOMASONIAN Class CD otto “The Secret of Success is Constancy of Purpose” When this Senior Class entered High School some years ago, it had the faith and confidence that it could accomplish what it desired. It desired to complete four years of High School work and be graduated. The Seniors had a goal before them—a High School education. Each one realized that he had an individual task to perform, that he would have to study and act to attain certain standards and requirements planned by his directors. In other words, the Senior Class desired a cloak of achievement to fall upon its shoulders. This cloak itself has no special material value, but it embodies in spirit and essence the accomplishment of a goal. It symbolizes the courage, the character, the intelligence, and integrity of each Senior repre' sented in the class of 1946. The Seniors have woven strong threads of character and personality into this cloak. We have cut the pattern with diligence and work, we have sewed it together with truth and trimmed it with perseverence. Thus we have made our armor durable to protect and to support us as we walk down the road into the Drama of Life. This cloak will be a valuable asset to us. It will help us outstrip our yesterdays, to bear our daily trials more graciously, and to do our work with more force and satisfaction. Class History _u n the fall of 1942, sixty-seven young actors from the various valley schools made their debut in St. Thomas High School of Education. At first we were all rather timid and stagestruck, but we soon found our props. During the first year we were given only small parts, but we played the rolls exceptionally well, especially in the bond drive, and at our class party. We struggled like good actors through the pitfalls of new subjects—Latin, biology, and algebra. After a strenuous examination in our roles, we passed on to better ones. Our second year found us in a bigger scene. Unconsciously, a cloak of self-confidence settled snugly on our shoulders and banished our stage fright. Mildly egotistical, we entered the basketball tournament, defeating each team in whirlwind victories. We attained our goal, championship. In recognition of excellent playing and good sportsmanship, we received the Oscar award. After endless cramming and worrying, we passed. As a fitting end for the year, we embarked upon a South Park picnic. Quite experienced now in our field, we prepared to enter our third year as understudy to the graduates. In our Junior year at St. Thomas, we were given larger parts to test our ability as actors. Although our cast was small, we gave a wonderful demonstration of our talent at the barn dance. Part of the cast took trips to a Latin exhibit, and a Symphony for cultural interest. During a friendly contest between classes, the the male members of our cast won the school basket ball championship. After all the tests in our different parts, we tried to surpass ourselves in the final test of the year, The Prom. We came through with flying colors, and passed on to more-dramatic roles in our Senior year. Years of study and worry are forgotten. This was to be our big year. The lights were dimmed and the spotlight was centered on the stars as the year began with the annual Federation Dance. Time was passing swiftly. The Chemistry Class toured the Jeannette Glass Factory and then returned to work on the Year Book. Days of picture taking, typing, and exacting work followed. Of course, the year would not be complete without the Senior Hop and the South Park Picnic. Treasuring the limited days we were spending together, the Seniors went to North Park. Commencement time arrived. We assumed a croak of poise and dignity. Happiness bloomed on each familiar face, but the honest eye betrayed the sadness in the heart. How true are the oft-quoted words of the immortal bard: Parting is such sorrow. We shall separate and fullfill the special role for which we have been so well prepared by years of training and studying at St. Thomas High. But when the final curtain rings down, may we meet again to share in the happiness promised by the Greatest Director, Almighty God. In the huge lobby I saw many familiar faces. Sitting in a group by the main door were Mary Lou Johnston, Mary Ann McGinley, Leona Limbacher, Veronica Limbacher, and Regina Ferguson, dressed in very lovely fur coats. After a short conversation, I learned that all five were operating a dancing school in Pittsburgh. As I glanced to my right, I noticed four well dressed men, Pat Jones, Tom Manion, Bob Curtis, and Ed Nemanic. Bob is manager of the A. P. store in Braddock; Pat, a football and basketball scout of a large college in New England; Tom, an outstanding news commentator, and Ed the owner of Turtle Creek's most popular and up-to-date theater. An usher showed me to my place and I found Laurel McCue, accompanied by a very handsome sailor, sitting next to me. Our conversation had to be short, but Laurel succeeded in telling me that she was a radar telephone operator for the Bell Teleohone Company. What a surprise I received as I read the program. Eugene Limbacher as Romeo, and Freda Morgan as Juliet ! To think that only ten years ago they had posed for a scene from Shakespeare's play, 'The Tragedy of MacBeth, for the 1946 Year Book. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, led by Maestro Schlabach, opened the program, playing the National Anthem. Dan Gribben performed exceptionally well at the piano and Edward Fetcho, who was also a member of the orchestra, played the violin. As the play progressed, I glanced toward the box seats in the balcony. There I saw a young lady with a note book and pencil in her hand jotting down the important events of the evening. She was no other than Mary Theresa O'Malley, the Pittsburgh Press' star newspaper reporter. During the intermission, the yearly collection for the Infantile Paralysis Fund was taken by Dr. Frank Griffin, superintendent of the Braddock General Hospital, accompanied by Nancy Ann Crossen, head nurse in the hospital. Helping in the Paralysis Drive were four popular slars from Hollywood. Jean Boland, who by her heartwarming scenes, has won the hearts of thousands of movie fans all over the country; Ann Audley, who a few years back took the place of Sonja Henie as queen of the ice; and Anna Margaret Dawson, who won the Academy Award as the most outstanding actress in her picture Meet Me in Saint Thomas. Last but not least, the audience was thrilled by the presence of Joe Thoma, the best male actor of the year. Photographers from the large Pittsburgh newspapers were busy taking pictures of the celebraties attending the play. A picture was taken of Jean Horton and Margie Anater, the two leading fashion experts of Gimbel's Department store, of Betty Lou Wall, Miss America of 1956, now traveling with Hit Parade Orchestra; of Ann Connelly, the very popular singer with Bing Sinatra's Band. Finally a picture was taken of Betty Kline, Altheda Lucas, Patsy Brown, Peggy Huffman, and Anne Adams, the leading social figures of Braddock, who were attending the play in a body. These five women have done much to keep Braddock one of the leading districts in Allegheny County. After the show, I met Barbara Hartle and Gerry Novotny, who told me they were coaching the Saint Thomas Girls' Basketball Team They had just returned from Philadelphia where the team had won the State championship. Bill Klein, Pittsburgh's youngest Mayor, was standing in front of my plane, talking to a group of husky young men who turned and greeted me warmly. They were Jack McFetridge, Jack Flynn, Jimmie Moore, Harry Klaus, and Dan Tomko, my old friends of Marshall Football fame. Jack Flynn informed me that all five had found berths on the Notre Dame Football squad, and that after four years of expert football playing, Jack McFetridge had been unanimously elected All-American half back. Of course, the conversation turned to the Class of 46 and we agreed that the members of that famous class were all playing an important role in the drama of life. Class CO ill 7 e, the Senior Class of 1946, now graduates of St. Thomas High, being of sound mind and body, hereby bequeath the following: To our Pastor and Teachers, we give our highest regard and deepest gratitude, for the help and encouragement they have given us during our four years at St. Thomas.
