T I. e THOMAS ONIAN CIVIL AIR PATROL CADETS Men in the air forces call them Kuvis —a strange name for members of the Civil Air Patrol Cadets, for kuvis are birds without flight. Why the nickname? Well, Cadets learn all about flying, but are not allowed to pilot planes. Later on they are permitted to learn to fly on their own. Former girl Cadets made up more than half of the W.A.S.P., crossing and recrossing the ocean with precious cargoes of men and equipment. Training in the Civil Air Patrol helps boys and girls, fifteen to seventeen years old get the feel of planes and their operation—an important step towards earning a pair of wings. A Cadet learns the principles of plane construction theory of flight, engine operation, crash procedure, plane servicing, meteorology, navigation, radio, Morse Code, military courtesy and drills Cadets act as navigators on inter-state planes, also. The 69th T.-J. Squadron is located in Swissvale. Here every Tuesday, Cadets drill and take notes. On Thursday an instructor has a First Aid Class. It is not all work though. Dances are given, skating parties, wiener roasts give a pleasure touch to the Army life oi these cadets. The Civil Air Patrol trains for a great future for American boys and girls.
