■ 1 CThomasonidn Recordings 7 Tlic THOMASONIAN T)ed ication We, the Senior Class of 1944, of Saint Thomas High School, solemnly and lovingly dedicate this issue of THE THOMASONIAN to Christ the King and His Immaculate Mother. We do this, not only in the hope of drawing down a blessing upon our work, but also in the hope that Christ and His Blessed Mother will bring to a weary and war torn world, a just and lasting peace. REVEREND FRANCIS SHIELDS Pastor The THOMASONIAN _ ------- -- — ---- REVEREND DONALD O’NEIL •Assistant ( I a s s 111 s t o r if Remember Music is a subtle accompanist for reminiscing, and the soft waltz strains of this ever-popular tune begin to awaken memories for me—memories of the four years our class has spent together. It is ever thus that when standing on a new threshold one looks back to survey the past and recapture a few highlights that will be hidden away in a little pocket of the mind, to be taken out from time to time in the years to come and polished up—as it were. The highlights of the past four years are very bright —so much that it will take years to erase them, because they reflect the daring colors of the world's canvas and echo the stirring strains or martial music. I remember September, 1940, when a varied assortment of boys and girls presented themselves at St. Thomas as first year high school students. I remember the shy glance and uncertainty of some; the assurance of others; but above all —the newness. We are entering a new age, even as the world was, because war cauldrons were then boiling and seething and beginning to spill over all the earth. Our interest was centered only in initiations, declensions, and new friends. We witnessed an unprecedented Presidential election, when Roosevelt was elected for a third term. We had a debating team that year, and the subject seemed rather co-incidental — The Power of the Federal Government. Our first year was over. Complacency ruled over us The ushering in our Sophomore year, came Pearl Harbor with its never to be forgotten treachery. Grim, silent people heard, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, our declaration of war on Japan. At school we worked laboriously over the intracacies of Caesar's Gallic Wars, nevar at the time thinking of its striking similarity with the antics of the Berlin house painter. Our Sophomore year was plainly marked by the absence of social events. We returned in September, 1942, as Upperclassmen, decidedly self-approved. We skipped through parties and dances, and trudged through ex ims. In the attempt to work along with the patriotic efforts of our country, the school sponsored a bond drive in connec • tion with the Third War Loan. Our class went all out for the idea, selecting a Victory Queen and scouring the town for prospective bond buyers. To our complete satisfaction pur class won. We rounded out the year by giving the traditional Prom. The finger of war touched our class for the first time, calling upon one of our boys, the first of a long line to follow. Quite suddenly we found ourselves Seniors. How seemingly long the years had been while looking forward to the fined term, and how quickly it arrived. The year marked startling world events, with the invasion of Africa and Italy the most outstanding. These victories meant only that many stalwart youths of the nation would have to do their part to bring about a longed-for peace. The boys from our class were no exeception. Several left for service. With our ranks rather sparse, the glorious day finally arrived, bringing to a climax a somehow momentous record. To review the history of our class is to review the history of the world, indeed. Our school memories will not be those of proms and parties, football and basketball games, beaus and best girls; it is inevitable that they will be memories of the appalling events of a sickened but brave world—events that have touched even the most significant of us. Our history as a class is not finished; it is being woven into the history of the world, and each of us will be a part of the pattern—a pattern fashioned under God's help, for freedom, for peace and for God. The high school was a central high school with well-equipped and up-to-date buildings, a lovely campus, and a large enrollment from the surrounding communities. Coming up the walk to the main building, I met Rosemary Cummings, Ann Glenn and Kathleen Cummings. Rosemary and Anna were both nurses and Kathleen was Secretary to a prominent lawyer in Chicago. I went up the steps of the administration building and in the foyer Jinnie Dowd and Dorie Finnerty were talking to Evelyn Boyle. I went over to talk to them and learned that Jinnie had become an outstanding interior decorator and Dorie was a society matron, who sponsored many of the local charity affairs. Evelyn, our apt chemistry student, was head of the Science department at Braddock High. Edgar Thoma and John West were passing and stopped to say hello. Edgar, always so careful about catching his bus, was president of the Harmony Bus Line, and John was coach of St. Thomas' champion basketball team. In the receiving line, I saw William McGinley and John Miller. Bill, an able statesman, was the leader of an international peace movement, and Johnny was a well known lawyer, and President of the National Council of Catholic Men. Mae Roberts and Pat Welsh came in right after me. They were discussing modern Catholic education which was of particular interest to Mae, dean of women at a university. Pat directed several dancing schools in Pennsylvania and New York. Ann Van Halanger, a famous singer, was on the program, accompanied by Mary O'Donnell. Mary was now a concert pianist. Looking through some of the classrooms, I found Tommy Scanlon and Eddie Kehoe, both pharmacists. While we were talking Bill McMahon and Jimmy Scuffle came in. Jimmy's extensive Spanish vocabulary had probably helped him attain his post as Ambassador to Spain. Bill, after long years of practical experience, was now administrator of the Diamond Ice Company. I saw Tommy Whitney walking through the hall and I went out to talk to him. He was full of airplane talk, as usual. He was now a successful airplane designer. Richard Butler, who was the Postmaster General, was in another class room with Rita Conlin and Mary Alice Costello. Rita was the author ofjthe latest best seller, The Catholic Plan for World Peace. Mary Alice was a teacher of mathematics in a middle western college. We walked back to the reception room and at the door I met Jimmie Wilson, Bill Dixon and Pat O'Hara. Jimmie was just back from Hollywood, where he had just finished directing a musical comedy. Pat and Bill were in uniform. Pat, an admiral, and Bill, a lieutenant-general. In another group were Agnes Darby, Catherine Guzak, Cleova Luther, and Rita Coyne. Catherine was a commercial artist; Cleo was Secretary to a Congressman; Agnes was Dietician at Braddock hospital, and Rita was a leader in Catholic Action. At lunch Dorothy McGuigan and Kathleen were the financial editors of a Pittsburgh newspaper. Across from me were Stella Chesnik, Francis Mullaney and Stephen Nemets. Stella had become a government girl. Frank was a commentator, and Steve's plan for post war normalcy had just been accepted by Congress. Ellen Schwartz, Jerry Schwaed, William and Mildred McNanamy, and Dorothy Murphy arrived after everyone was seated. I asked Kathleen what they had been doing since graduation and she told me that Ellen was the directress of an orphanage. William had followed in his father's footsteps as a mortician, Mildred was a teacher and Dorothy was a dramatic critic. Jerry was the most popular of the current crop of swoon-crooners. Just then I awoke— Oh, Jinnie gasped, what a crazy dream. PATRONS Rev. Francis Shields Rev. Donald O’Neil Rev. Joseph Clougherty Rev. Norbert D. McCarthy S.S.C.C. Rev. Robert M. Murphy Rev. Kloy I.
