Dedication We, the Senior Class of 1943, of Saint Thomas High School, solemnly dedicate this “Log’’ to me men in the armed service of our country. We do this not only in recognition of their valiant deeds on the battlefield, but because it is they who are preserving the rights and the freedoms that we cherish so dearly. the THOM ASONI AN 194 3 The THOMASOMAN 19 4 3 Reverend Francis Shields Pastor The THOMASON! AN 194 3 Reverend John Fording Assistant The THOMASONIAN 194 3 The THOMASONIAN 194 3 MOTTO: Now We Launch, Where Shall We Anchor? It is an old saying among sailors that every great ship has a soul. This is certainly true of the good ship, “Thomasonian ; for every student, from far and near, who has walked her gangplank and followed her four-year cruise has felt the power of association with that ship, not only during the cruise, but in after-life as well. Especially is this true of the fifty students, who in 1939, clamored enthusiastically over the railing of the “Thomasonian.” They were eager for sturdy winds and white-capped waves. Theirs was a great battleship, equipped with the essential tools and materials. Their four-year cruise was well mapped and carefully developed. Courses in Christianity assured them of a more serene and balanced life. Mathematics developed their reasoning power. Commercial subjects—typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping—made them reliable, capable, anti exact in all their undertakings. Sciences—biology, physics, anti chemistry—gave them a broader knowledge of the progress of the scientific world. Spanish united them more closely with their South American neighbors. English enabled them to express their thoughts more intelligently and coherently. No other voyagers on any ship could have received better training than the class of 1943. All that their trip on the “Thomasonian” has taught them will enable them to buffet the heavier storms of life. The training received, the pleasures enjoyed, and the knowledge acquired, will aid them in attaining their goals. After a successful and prosperous voyage the Thomasonian” has now anchored, setting a group of wiser, stronger, and more seaworthy mariners upon the shore of a topsy-turvy world. They had hoped to enter into a world of peace, love, and concord. Instead, they must go into a world filled with bloodshed, hate, and revenge. Now all their thoughts are turned to doing everything they can for God and country. No doubt most of the Senior boys of “43” will be called upon to serve their country in the armed forces. Already three have answered this call. I'he girls also will do their part. Some will be nurses, while others will work in the factories. No matter how little it is, all must do everything in their power to help restore this beautiful earth to the peace and grandeur which was its possession when it came from Almighty God. I'he class looks forward to great opportunities and hopes to meet all challenges bravely and triumphantly. How they will meet these challenges and take advantage of the opportunities remains to be seen. The log of this mother-ship shows a brilliant record and, if the future can be judged by the past, “all will be well.” If, however, in spite of all, trials and difficulties will prevail, the new mariners will go forward confidently knowing that each is “the master of his fate, the captain of his soul.” The THOMASONIAN 1943 Dolores Aranos Quiet and sedate, book-loving Dolores has endeared herself to all her classmates. Jean Betz A remarkable talent for writing was discovered by her work on the “Thomason ian.” This is only one of the many talents of our “Jeannie with the dark brown hair.” Edwin Ashoff Earnest and cooperative, Edwin has made many friends at St. Thomas. Joseph Broz.da “Joe” has won the loyal support of his classmates by his belief in fair representation and by his splendid work as President of the Federation. Brenda Biggins By her engaging smile and winning personality, Brenda has played an outstanding part in her class. She was an active member of the Speech Class. Through ability, I president 1 John Kenst Friendly and capable, John is the strange, (juiet type, whose opinions and sayings are listened to with interest. James Laughrey A happy disposition and an earnestness in work have enabled Jimmy to line! a place at the head of his class. Francis Mansion Francis’ extreme modesty could not hide from his friends and followers his splendid ability and outstanding work as a basketball star. Teresa Jones An ambitious spirit and willingness to accept responsibility have helped to make Teresa a joy to all who know her. Jean Klaus As an active member of the basketball team, Jean did much to further interest in girl’s sports during her four years of high school. Margaret Mangan Her (juiet ways and sweet smile have brought happiness to her classmates. Tit • THOM ASONIAN 19 4 3 The Thomasonian Log Sept. 1939 to June 1943 1939-1940 Sept. 5, 1939—The good ship “Thomasonian set sail on a four-year voyage through the seas of Catholic education to a port of honor, “Graduation. With Captain Sister Robcrtine at the helm and fifty courageous and ambitious sailors as a crew, we are filled with hope and determination to reach our destination . . . we will succeed for we have faith in God. Our first year of sailing reveals a spirit of cooperation. Oct. 2, evening—In the crowV nest, our lookout spies a new continent, “Debating.” Ocrr. 3—Our ship anchors here and three willing sailors, McCrea, Dalton, and Dinger embark on its shores. They thoroughly explore the region, making startling discoveries, and returning with many honors. Ocrr. 20—Men on board play shufticboard (football) with a crew of men from St. Justin's ship, gaining an amazing victory. Celebration is held aboard ship. Oct. 30—The sea is calm. A cool and mysterious air hovers about the ship. We reach a small island called “Initiation Isle.” Now occurs our first trial and, though inexperienced, we are united. We prove by our spirit in handling the dangers facing us that we are part of this ship, “Thomasonian,” ready to meet and conquer all that obstructs our course. Nov. 5—Student Council is formed and we resolve to strive to maintain high standards of good seamanship. 1940 1941 We have entered Sophomore Sea. Weather is uncertain. Storms may be approaching. Our debaters arc at the stern onward striving in their duties. Members of our crew, Whalen, Faust, O'Keefe, Gordon, and McCrea, discover an island and acclaim it for their own. This island, “My Tom-Boy Girl,” is reached only by earnest practice and endeavor. These gobs steal the show and always will be remembered for their fine performances. Feb. 9—Sorority and Fraternity groups stage a winter dance on the top deck. This reveals our cooperative spirit and becomes a financial assistance to the ship. 1941- 1942 Our voyage is half completed. Sept. 4—Some of the crew attempt Latin for the third year; others remain below or on the first deck and choose the easier, Spanish. Dec. ;—Oceans and seas are in fury! Pearl Harbor is attacked by the Japanese! Dec. 8—War is declared by the United States! One dauntless sailor. Baker, leaves our ship and boards the U.S.S. Terror. We sail through the rest of the year with these thoughts uppermost in our minds. May 12—After long months of preparation we sponsor a memorable occasion, the Junior-Senior Prom. 1942- 1943 Voyage is in its last phase. Two valiant defenders of our rights, Walsh and Fletcher depart from our bounty and become sailors in the U. S. Navy. Oct. 27—Senior members of the Catholic Federation hold a dance and proceeds go to a missionary sailor. April 27—Colorful Easter dance is given by the Seniors. First classmen. Tierney, Undercoffer, McCue, and McDonough weather the storms of Cicero and Virgil. June 13—The ‘' Thomasonian” is launched at the great seaport, “Graduation.” In memory of our four years of hardships and successes, we arc proud of our accomplishments, and grateful for the religious instructions and care bestowed on us by the Dominican Sisters.
