l s.T. VARSITY COMES ALIVE , l With the St. john-St. lThomas merger, football also took on a new look--both literally and figuratively. A strong vdteran St. Thomas lineup, a group of seasoned St. john's players, and some new blood from fboth schools' jV's of last year: this is the composition of the 1970 Irish squad. Bur it wasn't easy. Head Coach Dick Look and the other varsity coaches worked long and hard to unify the team and bring out the best in each player. In the season opener, St. Thomas stunned the favoried-St. Ladislaus, but the victory was marred by the injury of senior quarterback Ken Mdrris. Pete O'Neil, sophomore, finished out the season for Morris and did a fine job. Other outstanding individual achievements are these: Bbb Long place a 40-yard field goal and 22 otit of 27 extra-point kicks, Bob Knight rushed fclmr 1065 yards and scored 14 touchdowns. Bob was named best in the league and also All Second Division. Along with teammates seniors jim Sutton, Chuck Koch, and jim Ziegler, Bob was listed on the All League roster. Chuck Koch was voted Most Valuable Playerl by his teammates. With attention concentrating on the Varsity team, few were aware of the tremendous per- formance of this year's JV team. Coach Dave Otwell's little guys finished the season not only undefeated, but also unscored-upon. Lit- tle wonder Coach Look says the future is very promising. 1 I ei Q N fxfwig FIRST ROW: Gary Clark, Ray Ritter, jim Sutton, Chuck Koch, Co- captain Frank Pennisi, Captain Tom Driscoll, Greg Aquinto, Pete O'Neil, Tom Lynch, Ken Morris, SECOND ROW: Vin Peters, Bob Conlin, Tim Nelson, Dan Burke, jim Simon, Paul Carroll, Mike Pen- nisi, Al O'Neil, Bob Long, Bob Knight, joe Libs, Scott Meldrum, 54 TOP ROW: Dave Chicoine, joe Gorman, Iion Weber, Brian Boyce Leon Hieber, Coach Gauntlet, Coach McDermitt, Coach Otwcll, Coach Peterson, Coach Look, Coach Sutton, Coach' Pizzo, Kevin Kelly, ,lim Clark,Jim Ziegler, Ted Chenowethhjohn Rustl. 1 l wfte..
