Kathym Otwell l The Language Arts Department initiated the elective system this year-a move that pleased faculty arid students alike. New to the curriculum are courses such as Modern Liter- ature, History of Drama, Communication Skills, Nobel Prize Authors, Literary Master- pieces, and Reading Skills. Mrs. Powell heads the department and moderates the school news- paper Contac. Sister Marion moderates the yearbook. Mrs. Otwell xis the third member of the Language Arts staff. l RELIGIQN- ABOVE: Kate Fogelsong finds a diagram in Morality class amusing. Bob Knight finds it confusing and hopes it will go away if he doesn't look at it. BELOW: Sue Chenoweth tries the smile approach on Teen Agers and Christ classmates Amy Anhut and Bob Kraft. Reading and 'riting and lrithmetic, 'taught to the tune of a hickory stick -so go the words of an old'song. Another basic- Religion-is part of our curricu- lum, and in place of the hickory stick, this is taught to the tune of elective courses, modern text- books, audiovisual material, dedicated teachers, student- planned liturgies and retreats, active pupil participation in classroom activities, field trips, and outside speakers. Religion courses provide opportunities for searching, outside ourselves and within ourselves. Students who are open ,and reasonably mature find thatythe ideas presented in their coarses are the facts of life and thats what it's all about: LIFE.. l -3.
