V 1 1 Mrs. Rosemary McKenna l I POTS AND PANS Where is a better place to express yourself than in art class? Students learn the essentials of the craft such as brush strokes, and color combinations and how to work with water colors as well as oil paints. Sculpturing is also popular in the course. This year we've seen new outfits galore that came out of clothing class. Sewing machines, pattern books, pins, needles, thread, patterns, and colorful material could be seen around Room 200 during class time. Out of the confusion was witnessed all these being trans- formed into new skirts, jumpers, ponchos, etc. As for foods class-the large number of people in it learned almost everything possible about the subject at hand -foods! Important facts such as vitamin value, and cal- orie content of different edibles were brought out. But the grande finale took place when the cooking began. Throughout the days people's noses were in the air trying to decipher the different smells-there was choc- olate chip cookies, brownies, cherry pie. . . Thank you Mrs. McKenna for educating us in the fine crafts of artistry, sewing and cookery. - .1 tw: A ., xt. , , u t lt 1 ff' P-1 Uv-.wh .YH , Lt 1 at nw ew ,tt tl. t if mst W du wr. Num- berwise they could be called mini-chorals, but perfor- mance-wise they were maxi- chorals all the way. At both practices and concerts it was evident that interest and enthusi- asm were the qualities that char- acterize both teacher and stu- dents. lr I ABOVE: Some members of First Semester Choral, Chris Oliver, Mike ldruzich, Peggy Parrot, Susan Simon, and Marie Khymayyis. BELOW: The girlls gym class plays many sports during the year including field hockey. How clearly all of us upperclassmen remember those Freshman days when we were required to take Physical Education and Health. This year's Freshman have enjoyed that fifty-live minute period of pitting themselves against each other to keep both physically and mentally fit. They have played volleyball, basketball, field hockey, badminton, archery and other invigorating sports. Miss Muczyn- ski came new to the St. Thomas athletic department this year and the girls all enjoyed her. Mr. Ramker, a Two-year veteran has survived through the task of teaching the boys. Yes we will never be able to forget all those days of showers that were also required and how a person suddenly woke up after first hour gym with hair that looked like a tornado had just passed through it. If only you guys could know what a disaster it was trying to get back to looking like our normal selves, maybe then you'd appreciate our good looks. just always remember that gym was exciting in every way. Mrs. Barbara Mosher brings experience and enthusiasm to her work as head of the department. Mr. Eugene Leppanen, who assists her, is a competent mathematician, who also applies his skill to a related area-Drafting. Sister Florentia and Sis- ter Barbara, our language teachers, feel quite at home both in their fields and at St. Thomas. This year French IV and Latin III have been added to the curriculum, enabling students to earn a major in two languages. Skill in reading is emphasized during the first two years of language courses. Speaking and writing in the foreign language are additional skills impart- ed in third and fourth years. Redies wait for their turn. ., F4-M,-dc, 3511 X Q., , 'x . Classes are open to sophomores, jun- iors, and seniors. The young upperclassmen chemists and physicists elect science courses for a variety of reasons: natu- ral interest, challenge, career requirements, and a chance to associate with Mr. Bartley, friend and line teacher. A secon- dary reason for a few might be the boiling pot. Mrs. Cal- houn also manages to keep busy. In addition to three Biology I classes-a sophomore requirement-she teaches the depart- ments newly added Advanced Biology and Conservation elec- tives. Both courses have proved popular, having reached maxi- mum enrollment long before registration was completed. I3 The Social Studies Department consisted of two teachers, yet it main- tained a busy schedule offering a wide variety of courses. Mr. Alfred Curtiss, famous for his hieroglyphics on the chalk board, headed the department. Mr. Richard Look, transferred to St. Thomas from St. john's, Ypsi. Even though we couldn't all register in his World History, Geography, or American History classes, Mr. Look became quite familiar to all during the football season. Mr. Curtiss taught semester courses in Current Events, Government, Economics, and Sociology. With the combined efforts of these two line teachers, American History was brought to the Juniors. Through panel discussions, explora- tions of maps, and current news- papers, students became aware of what formed the foundations of today, and how the world presently stands. The excitement of the .weekend began Friday evening at the traditional Homecoming dance, this year entitled Around the World in 71 Days. It was a glittering success with lovely decora- tions and the fine entertainment provided by The Whiz Kids. t Queen Clare! Canham reigned over the gala affair with her lcourt, Sheila Kinney, Debbie Kraft, Karen Kluin, and Mary Krasny. The evening proved to be' an enjoyable and ex- citing experience for all who sailed off around the worldL The bonfire on Saturdlay night made spirits blaze high. Held on the K of C grounds, it pro- vided an, opportunity for each class to try to out yell the other in cheers and for the whole high school to prove their spirit. In between these festivities students from the various classes worked secretly and feverishly to complete their floats which would be' shown in all their glory at Sunday's game. BELOW Coach Look s advice to Irish players paid off in victory. On Sunday, October 18, the sun was bright and so were the faces of loyal St. Thomas fans. This was the big day-our Homecoming game against Our Lady of Lourdes. Before the game floats and cars crowded onto the school parking lot preparing for the caravan. The queen and her court rode on the Senior float-a huge Shamrock. The junior float was awarded first place. Between the halves of the Irish all-the-way victory, the traditional half-time ceremonies took place before a large crowd of students, alumni, and other St. Thomas fans. Homecoming '71 was a weekend of fun and spirit that began with a lovely dance on Friday and lasted through the spirit-filled bonfire. Winning the game on Sunday brought a great weekend to a close. V , We. The St. Thomas Pep Club had done it again! Break loose, the freshmen theme set the pace for the fun-filled Pep Week. The Sophs converted the familiar high school corridors to Soph Blvd, 73rd Street and simi- lar names, and posted colorful traffic signs warning all pedestrians that the Irish would have plenty of GO to STOP the Aggies! Helium-filled balloons floated everywhere with the Juniors' up and away message. The Seniors brought Dogpatch, U.S.A. to Ann Arbor with their corncob pipes, straw hats, farmer clothes, and hillbilly band. Pep King Leon Hieber and clever class skits highlighted the Pep Rally and a 62-55 Irish victory overASt. Agatha climaxed the week. VARSITY COMES ALIVE , l With the St. john-St. lThomas merger, football also took on a new look--both literally and figuratively. A strong vdteran St. Thomas lineup, a group of seasoned St. john's players, and some new blood from fboth schools' jV's of last year: this is the composition of the 1970 Irish squad. Bur it wasn't easy. Head Coach Dick Look and the other varsity coaches worked long and hard to unify the team and bring out the best in each player. In the season opener, St. Thomas stunned the favoried-St. Ladislaus, but the victory was marred by the injury of senior quarterback Ken Mdrris. Pete O'Neil, sophomore, finished out the season for Morris and did a fine job. Other outstanding individual achievements are these: Bbb Long place a 40-yard field goal and 22 otit of 27 extra-point kicks, Bob Knight rushed fclmr 1065 yards and scored 14 touchdowns. Bob was named best in the league and also All Second Division. Along with teammates seniors jim Sutton, Chuck Koch, and jim Ziegler, Bob was listed on the All League roster. Chuck Koch was voted Most Valuable Playerl by his teammates. With attention concentrating on the Varsity team, few were aware of the tremendous per- formance of this year's JV team. Coach Dave Otwell's little guys finished the season not only undefeated, but also unscored-upon. Lit- tle wonder Coach Look says the future is very promising. 1 I ei Q N fxfwig FIRST ROW: Gary Clark, Ray Ritter, jim Sutton, Chuck Koch, Co- captain Frank Pennisi, Captain Tom Driscoll, Greg Aquinto, Pete O'Neil, Tom Lynch, Ken Morris, SECOND ROW: Vin Peters, Bob Conlin, Tim Nelson, Dan Burke, jim Simon, Paul Carroll, Mike Pen- nisi, Al O'Neil, Bob Long, Bob Knight, joe Libs, Scott Meldrum, 54 TOP ROW: Dave Chicoine, joe Gorman, Iion Weber, Brian Boyce Leon Hieber, Coach Gauntlet, Coach McDermitt, Coach Otwcll, Coach Peterson, Coach Look, Coach Sutton, Coach' Pizzo, Kevin Kelly, ,lim Clark,Jim Ziegler, Ted Chenowethhjohn Rustl. 1 l wfte.. Although the scoreboard showed the Irish victo- rious in only five of fourteen league games, those who followed the Irish faithfully through pre-season scrimmages, regular games, and post-season con- tents saw more-much more. Determination, team- work, and enthusiasm accompanied the Cagers to court time after time. As the season progressed some of the early weakness were worked out, but hopes for an exciting state tournament were short- lived. The Irish were defeated by Dundee in the first round of the playoffs in early March. 58 , 9 Thdnias SCORE BOARD St. Ladislaus De Sales St. Mary St. Agatha Lourdes Mt.. The largest class at St. Thomas, this year's ninth grade are obviously with us. In fact, they are-literally-all over the place. While a few tried a little too hard to be cool, the majority seemed to realize that a school is as good as its stu- dent body. But S.T. sophomores refuse to be overlooked. They have maintained the enthusiasm they showed last year by being active in all school organizations. The sopho- mores cheering section is usually well filled at athletic events. No, the lively Juniors are as 'cwith it as they were from their first days at St. Thomas. Their presence is felt in the numerous fund-raising activities they sponsor: bake sales, dances, candy sales. But, More important, their presence is felt in scholastic, athletic, and other co-curricular activities. While Junior year naturally takes on that wait-until-we're-seniors mentally, the Class of 1972 is right here now. And we're glad! SENIOR LIFE HB- Senior year means many things. To all it means graduation from high schoolg to most it means deciding on a suitable college and the subsequent applications and testingg to some it means a part-time job to help finance future educational expenses. Senior year means the enjoy- ment of certain uprivilegesi' around school. The Class of 1971 had, also, some unique experiences: the co-ed Senior Retreat in Canada and the Spring trip to Nassau. This completed book was the goal we kept in mind when problems and frustrations tempted us to settle for something less. Our sense of accomplishment includes a sense of gratitude for the combined talents, interests, and enthusiasm of many people. We recognize them as follows: The entire St. Thomas staff and student body, who on many ,occasions assisted us in various ways, the exceptional photographer from Craine Studio and our excellant student photographers lvfike Kruzich and Tom Nlarshallg Seniors Mary jo Chicoine, Sue Belanger, jane Mosher, Colleen Ryan, and Carol Ullrich whose invaluable service during the first semester made our ad and subscription drives so successfulg Nlary Sherzer, Kate Fogelsong, and Pat Driscoll who worked for one seniester. Special appreciation, of course, belongs to Juniors Cindy Gould, Debbie Kraft, and Patti O'Donnell for their year-round contribution to layout, editing, and copy-writing' operations of the SI-IAMROCK. 1 1 The influence of Mr. Frank Vel and Sister Mary Edward can be detected in our book. To these two and to all others of the Detroit Student Press Summer journalism Work- shop we owe our gratitude. And finally, to our advisor, Sister Marion Haas forhelping us' especially with the organizational aspects and for insisting that pretty good is not good enough. . To all then who shared in the making of the 1971 we DEDICATED the 1971 SHAMROCK. Weihope you like your book. We do! ' X Kathy Conlin and Karen Brown, Co-editors.
