THE NY FACES OF ENGLI H Add listening, acting and re-acting to reading, writing and speaking and you have English at St. Thomas. The use of film- strips, records and dramatic interpretations supplement class discussions. The Freshman and Sophomore courses include a study of literary types and mythology. An in-depth study of American literature is taken junior year, while the Seniors concentrate on English literature. Besides covering the basic text, a daily English class includes studying vocabulary, writing papers and reading novels. Individual and group attendance at local cultural events is promoted through the English classes. A few of the APA plays enjoyed by the students this year were: Cabaret, The Price and I Do, I Do. Below: A returned paper brings comment as Carm Bellestri hands Steve Dinka a graded theme. Above right: Patty Wykes answers all john Barry's questions in junior English. Below right: Freshmen can enjoy English not only by reading, but by listening, as demonstrated by Sue Chenowith and jess Brown. Far right: Routine vocabulary drills will certainly make some kind of impression on second-year English students.

nvolvem ent makes c asses fun Three elective courses which prove very rewarding are Speech, journalism, and Novel Seminar. The jour- nalism class publishes the school paper, Contac, under the direction of Mrs. Powell who also conducts the Novel Seminar. Speech class offers many opportunities for getting rid of various inhibitions which interfere with effective communication. 20
