As far as the school system is concerned, Mr. Leo 1. Wagner takes command in his first year as principal. Sister Mary Robert, the assistant principal, and Mrs. Doris Gay- nor, the school secretary, give him all of the aid he needs to run an effective administration. The parish, likewise, is expertly managed by our new pastor, Msgr. Vincent Howard, and his assistants, Fr. james Frenza and Fr. Patrick jackson. Together they not only handle the problems of our church but manage to take part in school functions as well. l Our parish priests: Fr. james Frenza, Msgr. Vincent Howard and Fr. Here at St. Thomas this department is staffed with hard-working and efficient people. Whether it be Mr. Dyer doing the yardwork, Mr. Mercier doing the handiwork, or Mrs. Hieber, Mrs. Mercier, Mrs. Lucas, and Mrs. Clisham serving lunches in the cafeteria, there is no doubt that the school is well kept and will con- tinue to be as long as the quality of our present staff is preserved. x . WHERE THERE IS HATRED LET ME LOVE WHERE THERE IS DOUBT FAITH Religion is more than just Mass on Sunday, receiv- ing the Sacraments, and prayer. THE NY FACES OF ENGLI H Add listening, acting and re-acting to reading, writing and speaking and you have English at St. Thomas. The use of film- strips, records and dramatic interpretations supplement class discussions. The Freshman and Sophomore courses include a study of literary types and mythology. An in-depth study of American literature is taken junior year, while the Seniors concentrate on English literature. Besides covering the basic text, a daily English class includes studying vocabulary, writing papers and reading novels. Individual and group attendance at local cultural events is promoted through the English classes. A few of the APA plays enjoyed by the students this year were: Cabaret, The Price and I Do, I Do. Although teaching history last year, Miss laughrin has taken over all the business classes, which include personal typing, typing 1, 2, and bookkeeping. Bookkeeping is a step toward the business world. Students benefit greatly from the knowl- edge acquired in this subject. Clothing takes another step toward the future. Mrs. McKenna insures each student in the class the basics of sewing. Girls show their ability by the well tailored garments they make. ln Art, Mrs. McKenna also guides the students to develop their talents. Students in Art I learn the basic steps necessary to develop their talent. They use chalk, pencil, and brush resulting in some very creative works. Art II students acquire talent in other areas such as paper mache and yarn articles. 33 DE S SHAPE Above: Freshmen boys get a workout in Coach Mike Ramker's gym class. W TIME F011 ACTIVITIES NW STSC-Democracy 111 Actlon The Student Council's works to bring about greater school unity as well as a closer relationship between the students and the faculty. Under the leadership of Sister Mary Robert, the Student Council has sponsored several projects. The Get Acquainted Dance introduced the Freshman to the rest of the school. Ghosts and goblins made the scene at the annual Halloween Dance. The Christmas Baskets lthanks to the rest of the school, of coursell provided food for the needy. The Christ- mas Mass is something surely to be remembered. The most unusual project of the year, was the revision of the dress code, which was appreciated by most of the students. The officers and the representatives from each class have truly contributed much toward a better school environment. l . . l1I'SCS This year's Future Nurses Club has been more active than clubs in the past. In the course of the year, the girls attended meetings and rallies sponsored by the Michigan League for Nursing. During Public Health Week, the FNC members attended a lecture on public health and a luncheon at which top state offi- cials, including Governor Milliken, were guests. F Being a Future Teacher at St. Thomas is not a once-a-week activity either. This year's club organized many projects including collecting Christmas gifts for the men in Vietnam and planning a playground program for grade school children. 42 of the Future. HOMECOMING DANCE BEGINS DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES Homecoming Weekend, October 10-12, was a memorable one for St. Thomas students, faculty, and alumni. The Days of Wine and Roses Dance on Fri- day night initiated the festivities. The artistic decora- tions and the choice of the Collegiates for music proved the seniors' ability as sponsors for this activity. Highlighting the evening was the traditional Crowning of the Queen. The following night, spirit blazed to a new high at the Bonfire at the K. of C. picnic grounds. With enough warmth reserved from this, many loyal Irish fans braved the rain to attend the Homecoming game with Mt. Carmel on Sunday. Although floats got a little soggy Ceven the seniors' prize-winning fire- breathing dragon eventually succombedl, football uniforms a bit muddy, and cheerleaders and spectators somewhat drippy, the Homecoming Court smiled through it all, and in their halftime appearance on the field gave the impression that it was a bright, sunny day after all. Led by the strong running of captain Tom Darga, the team swept through its league season without defeat. The Meet at Grosse Pt. St. Paul, our victory by one point, gave St. Thomas the championship this year. Tom Darga remained unbeaten in all of our class C meets, earning all-state honors. Outstanding perfor- mances were given by Seniors Pat Chase, john Carr, and Steve Royce. Co-Captains Tom Marshall and Dan Hardie, along with jim Deighton and Kevin McMahon, also turned in fine efforts and received letters. Special thanks should be given to Coach David Peale, who did a fine job, and provided much inspiration to all. O OPPONENT Orchard Lake St. Mary St. Alphonsus St. Agatha Gross Pt. St. Paul Sacred Heart Seminary HOT IRISH EXCITE THE CROWD This year's basketball season can be summed up in one word: frustration. In the 5-win, 9-loss league play, most of the losses were by six orless points. After taking 2 out of 3 non-league games in the pOSt-Season, the Irish met defeat in the first round of the district tournaments when they were upset by a strong Dundee team. Co-captains Steve Royce and Mike Deighton had a starting line consisting largely of seniors. A number of the reserves performed consistently well. Coaching credit goes to Mike Ramker who produced a fine team in his first year in this capacity. OPPONENT S.T. St. Francis de Sales 79 82 St. Mary 79 54 St. Agatha 68 67 Our Lady of Lourdes 68 70 Mt. They first shook this school by surpassing the juniors and the sophomores in the yearbook drive when they attained their S1000 goal. Their fantastic representation at both the football and basketball games confirms this enthusiasm. Such bursts of spirit continually astound the upperclassmen and if the class of '73 follows the exemplary pattern they have set up for themselves this year, they will continue to be a credit to themselves and St. Thomas High School. rf' .Q ' 1 1355 ,, if 1 he x Q-,sf-,:El1:y4-- l F 54 L A S534 Q f L 'l' , 3 ,QQ X 1 Fit'-f , - f-., K ,qw I .ui -1- 2' .Fx ,-sad Mary Arnold Karen Bell Michael Brikle Constance Blond Judith Bridault less Brown Joanne Butler Carol Chard Susan Chenoweth Mark Chicoine Lynn Clark Robert Conlin Richard Darga james Deighton Stephanie DeNoff Sharon Diroff Anne Eisele Mary Ford Mark Foster Rochelle Gibson Barbara Green Theresa Hadley Edward Hanlon Theresa Haynor Stephen Heilmann Paula Huczek Kathleen Iott Barbara jacob jeff Knight Thomas lohnson Gary Klinger Robert Kraft Lisa Langstaff Linda Leite Susan Liska james Magielski Mary Marshall john McCarty Mary McDonald Kevin McShane Mary Ann MeZa Thomas Mitchell Pamela Madjeski 78 0 0 0 ' l iii-P by -T57 I wi . St. Thomas finds these people of many moods and many interests nice to have around. The Sophs are represented in every all- school organization, they participate enthusiasti- cally in all school functions, and sponsor many themselves, such as the Valentine Dance and Activity Night. The Class of 1972 with its athletes, scholars, and other leaders will continue to attract the attention and admiration of all of us. ,B gg? ft ? l fa ' i? ' , . Q XJ-it-lx, + lunior year is a great and busy one. For, although only a little free time exists after the tests are taken, the scholarships worked for, and colleges consid- ered, the class of '71 wisely takes advantage of every minute of it. They are always represented at the games, dances, and other activities by a good major- ity and thus our continuously aiding school spirit. And despite the lack of time, the juniors are con- stantly having Bakes sales, selling refreshments and sponsoring activities to earn enough money to hold a successful junior-Senior Prom. For obvious reasons St. Thomas takes pride in the junior Class of '71 and hope that their drive and initiative will carry them successfully through the rest of their high school months. ,JW f ,V ,4 I , lf' lx if .Sl P2 --11 Kevin 0 Mara J, Alfonso O Neill FA' , , f I 4- i .ns V 1 1 in , i V i ii i? -my-.
