Work Is Love Made Visible The Perfect Man did what is natural to man; He worked. My Father works even until now and I work. Christ worked; Christian students work. Work is God ' s gift to man. Through the work of men the powers and hidden energies of God ' s created things are made visible. This gift of God to man can become man ' s gift to God, to his neighbor, and to himself. And then . . . Work is love made visible. And all work is empty Save where there is love. Herein is found the ideal of the student at work in all of his activities as he prepares for his life work during his school days. « ■€ THE SHAMROCK Published by St. Thomas Hifjh School I Ann Arbor, Michigan w ■A m V 1 Im ' ' 1 « 1 . ■ml i i ■' IB ■i . jJHjn no ' ■:.: lilBiBj ' ' ' Kill 1 A 4 T ff ' ao We Dedicate . . . This story of a school year is dedi- cated to the ideal of Christian work. It is in his work that man either effec- tively comm its himself to or turns aside from the fulfillment of the divine plan in his regard. To the Catholic student school life teaches the dignity of work through the achievement of the specific goals pre- sented by Christian education. Spiritual living, intellectual growth, physical and social development demand work to produce the student of character who should stamp his life-work with the visible seal of a Christian worker who believes that Work is love made visible. %.„ ' -T- trr • r£.r - v: U ' n frill ' 6 ' ' ' Ri hl Reverend Monsigiior Warren G. Peek MONSIGNOR AND HIS ASSISTANTS, FATHER GERALD NITOSKI, FATHER PATRICK JACKSON Nowhere is love made more visible than in the daily working hours of the parish priest. As Christ gave Himself by means of His work, so too a pastor delivers himself for the salva- tion of souls through the incessant demands made by his daily life in the parish. For twenty-four years Monsignor Peek has exemplified the devoted pastor whose first concern is the achievement of that work given to him through his ordination: preaching, teach- ing, and administering the sacraments. Second only to his deep interest in the spiritual growth of his parish is the continued effort of Monsignor to provide all the facilities necessary for the education of the children of St. Thomas. In the administration of his parish and school, Monsignor ' s two assistants. Father Nitoski and Father Jackson aid in many ways. But as teachers of religion in the high school, they instruct not only in the truths of Catholi- cism, but also by their personal example. Zealous, self-sacrificing, interested in each of the students, they present a living example of the value of Christian work undertaken for the sanctification of others. In our priests we see fulfilled the words of the poet: And in keeping yourself with labor, you are in truth loving life. And to love life through labor is to be intimate with life ' s inmost secret. For to be idle is to become a stranger unto the season, and to step out of life ' s procession that marches in majesty and proud submission towards the infinite. Father Jackson is conducting a pleasant class in which the Jun- ior Boys are analyzing the questions raised by racial prejudice. 13 MR. JOHNSTON EXPLAINS THE SCRIPTURE LESSON TO THE FRESHMEN BOYS ; Religion Classes The story of God ' s life in man and Man ' s life in God is the most vital course in the school. Religion classes attempt to ex- plain, to inspire, and to guide students. Here is taught why all work is empty save where there is love. Scripture, ethics, the history of the Church, sociology, modern problems that involve moral principles— these topics form the course of study that should produce well-informed and active Catholics. 14 I JUNIORS DISCUSS THE TASK OF WOMAN IN THE MODERN WORLD SOPHOMORES TRY TO FIND THE ETHICAL ANSWER TO THE PROBLEM i Senior Boys Honor Onr Lady Tradition wields a powerful impact on school life, but the most important of all traditional activities for seniors is the procession in honor of Mary. Senior boys honor her as Queen of the Holy Rosary, while senior girls honor her as Queen of May. These pro- cessions are significant spiritual activities for the entire high school. 16 i K Senior Acolytes Practice Eleven seniors have served as acolytes during their four years in high school. Father Jackson gives them a final prac- tice for the Forty Hours Devotion. M. Fitzgerald, J. McMillan, J. Carr, R. Johnston, S. Hufano, M. Gir- aud, D. Miley, D. Fredrickson, T. O ' Brien, R. Work is God ' s Gift To Man STUDY, which is really true work, can help us to know more certainly the values that are right, but a love of work as God ' s gift to man vivifies achieve- ment.
