jatAer Wagee jclclredded lie SZniOPd REV. E. P. Magee, E.S.B., Principal Two of our recent graduates died this past year. Mickey OIConner graduated in 1950. We are proud of him because of the kind of person he was. He also was an outstanding athlete. He died last Rugust of polio. Ioe Scardino graduated in 1949. He was not an outstanding athlete, nor was he a brilliant student, but of him, too, because of his personal qualities, we are proud. He died in the service of his country last November. These two St. Thomas alumni are well remembered by their schoolmates and their teachers. There is a perpetual memorial to them in our hearts and in our prayers. This past year, as was fitting, an athletic memorial was established for Mickey O'Conner, the outstanding athlete. The citation which accompanies this memorial applies also, in its essentials, to Ioe Scardino, and it contains, I think a message for each of you. I will repeat part of it, with slight changes. If their careers were looked on from a merely natural point of View, we would say that their lives ended before they began. But there is no natural point of viewethere is only God's point of View, and from that point of view, they had reached the perfection that God wanted. Every boy must reach this perfection, whether his life be long or short, and that perfection requires that we become like God who is perfect Truth, perfect Goodness, and perfect Love. We believe loseph Scardino and Mickey OlConner had developed these qualities in a way that St. Thomas High School can be proud of them. Q few of you graduates have made brilliant records as students. Some of you have won distinction in athletics or in other school activities. That is good, but there is something more important. We hope each of you will always be mindful that the goal of every boy is eternal lifeenot a temporal lifeeand that there is an obilgation upon each one to develop those God-like qualities which were reflected in the lives of Mickey OiConner and Joe Scardirio.
