M. Sheehan, E.S.B., Faculty Advisnr Volume Nine 5., THOMAS HIGH SCHOOL Foreword For the theme of this year's Hquin we have decided to indicate the fact that God is present in each of our school activities. If the symbol, which is explained on the dedication page, seems out of place with some of the drawings, this merely underlines our imperfect understanding of God's interest and presence in all that we do. I wish here to give thanks to Father Sheehan whose help assured the success of our efforts. My gratitude also to Raeburn Studios and Mr. Samarjian who handled our photography, and to Mr. Ralph Harbison of the Gulf Publishing Company whose instruction and advice got us started and kept us going. Particular credit is due the members of the Qquin editorial staff, those tireless workers who have given so steadily of their time and energy. Special thanks is due, also, to Larry Storrs, who drew our introduction pages; to Bob Kainer, who did the pictures of St. Basil and St. Thomas, and whose Eagle cartoons are seen throughout the book, and to Gerard Hughes for the frontispiece of the school. Finally, I want to thank our principal and faculty for their constant co-operation, and those members of the faculty and student body who helped in special ways. To have been editor of the Qquin of 1953 is the acme of my days at St. Thomas and undoubtedly the greatest honor I have ever received. I Eff Griggd . E. P. Magee, E.S.B., Principal Two of our recent graduates died this past year. Mickey OIConner graduated in 1950. We are proud of him because of the kind of person he was. He also was an outstanding athlete. He died last Rugust of polio. Ioe Scardino graduated in 1949. He was not an outstanding athlete, nor was he a brilliant student, but of him, too, because of his personal qualities, we are proud. He died in the service of his country last November. These two St. Thomas alumni are well remembered by their schoolmates and their teachers. There is a perpetual memorial to them in our hearts and in our prayers. This past year, as was fitting, an athletic memorial was established for Mickey O'Conner, the outstanding athlete. The citation which accompanies this memorial applies also, in its essentials, to Ioe Scardino, and it contains, I think a message for each of you. I will repeat part of it, with slight changes. If their careers were looked on from a merely natural point of View, we would say that their lives ended before they began. But there is no natural point of viewethere is only God's point of View, and from that point of view, they had reached the perfection that God wanted. Every boy must reach this perfection, whether his life be long or short, and that perfection requires that we become like God who is perfect Truth, perfect Goodness, and perfect Love. We believe loseph Scardino and Mickey OlConner had developed these qualities in a way that St. Thomas High School can be proud of them. Q few of you graduates have made brilliant records as students. Some of you have won distinction in athletics or in other school activities. That is good, but there is something more important. We hope each of you will always be mindful that the goal of every boy is eternal lifeenot a temporal lifeeand that there is an obilgation upon each one to develop those God-like qualities which were reflected in the lives of Mickey OiConner and Joe Scardirio. The purpose of our Student Council is to bring about a closer cooperation between the staff and students on school discipline and school activities. It enables our students, especially the Seniors, to present their Viewpoints and requests to the faculty, cmd to develop leadership and share in responsibility. It is quite evident that the Student Council here at St. Thomas has been instrumental in the development of the outstand- ing school spirit which we have today. Hlong with the more detailed work of the Coun- cil, the frequent assemblies at which the Principal discusses school affairs with the Seniors and the frequent assemblies for the whole student body are, we believe, very wholesome and helpful aspects of our school life. The Student Council plans the social activities, which this year included the cere- monies for the Home Coming Game, and the Mid-qur and Senior Proms. This year's Council also did the promotion work for the Port Hrthur Trip, promoted the Intramural Basketball Tournament and instituted the Student Hall Patrol. The spirit of our school this year has been seldom matched and never surpassed. This is in no small measure due to the leadership of our Student Council. May this spirit continue and increase. Celmcm. 3A2 ofAem , CTM4 In the New Testament there is not much written about Mary, Christ's Mother. But what is written is significant, and every Catholic has some knowledge of how important she was, and is, in her Son's plans for us. It is like that with the Mothers' Club except that the pictures on this page do not begin to signify its real im- portance. They work in the background, but their work is done out of love, and is of the utmost importance to our school. The projects of the Mothers' Club in 52-53 included the Style Show in the Fall, the Christmas Party, and the preparing and serving of the Father and Son Banquet in February. The Mothers' Club provided the school with some new equipment which helped our evaluation to be the out- standing success that it was. They also joined with the Boosters' Club in putting on this Spring Festival. The Mothers' Club has done much to help the students and the life of our school. They are all successful. Those who own their businesses, are making money; those who work for others, make good salaries. They are all good men, too; thoroughly reliable. This is why we want more people from St. Thomas to become depositors here. We should like to have students as savings depositors-help them to become thrifty. Later, when they enter business or professional life, they will have the background of a bank connection which will prove helpful throughout life. a linbeck Construction Corporation m l' h P. 0.
