YIIU WHU ARE ABU T TU LIVE Recently rt was my prrvrlege to read two remarkable letters One wa wrrtten by a youth to the mother of hrs grrl frrend m whrch he asked the hand of her daughter rn marrrage l-le descrrbed hrs Catholrc background and stated that hrs educatron and trarnrng had been thoroughly Catholrc Hrs pastor would vouch for these statements rf she would care to consult hrm The second letter was the answer wrrtten to the young man The mother answered that thrs decrsron was one her daughter would have to make and that she had such confrdence rn her daughter s cha acrer he trarnrng and Judgment that any chorce she would make would meet w1th her ungualrfrei approval The letters were wrrtten over frfty years ago and mrght be rnserted as a footnote to Pope Prus Xl letters on Chrrstran Educatron and Chrrstran Marrrage The young mans hrghest qualrfrcatron accordrng to hrs own statement was the trarnrng he had recerved rn hrs Catholrc home whrch trarnrng wa perfected and completed by hrs Catholrc educatron The mother appealed to the same fundamentals of Catholrc trarnrng ln vrew of that trarnrng she felt no concern regardrng her daughters chorce and expressed the hrghest confrdence that her daughter would choose wrsely and well I need not tell you that that marrrage was rrchly blessed by God Those young people of frfty years ago are now approachrng the end of therr days surrounded by therr chrldren s chrldren and respected by all who know them The home whrch they establrshed has always been an outstandrng example of famrly lrfe gurded by Chrrstran rdeals and culture They lrke to speak of the happrness whrch results from lrvrng the Catholrc way lt rs that same trarnrng whrch that young man knew was hrs hrghe t qualrfrcatron that to develop rn you the mrnd of Chrrst They have wanted you to thrnk and act and judge 1ust as Chrrst would They would prepare you for what you must be and for what you must do to frnd the sublrme end for whrch you were created Thrs rs drffrcult work lust as the potter must beat the clay and put rt under the wheel and grrnd rt and shape rt and submrt rt to a terrrble ordeal before he gets the frnrshed p oduct so the teacher must mold your soul Those hours rn the classroom more hours of home work unpleasant drscrplrn eyperrences apparently useless tasks all these add up to help develop rn you the full stature of the Chrrst lrke man ln these days rt rs necessary for you to work doubly hard for you mu t be strong rn your arth The sprrrt o the world rs so oppo ed to your Catholrc rdeals and Chrrstran truth that rt rs rnevrtable that unless you are resolv d to be a strong zealous and loyal Catholrc you X rll become even worse than a bad one We are con rdent and we pray that the m n of St Thomas wrll be strong rn therr farth that th y wrll be the leaven whrch wrll make acrety what rt should be that they wrll alway reflect rn therr lrves therr Catholrc trarnrng ara that the p actrce of therr Farth wrll brrng an abundance of happrness rnto therr lrves FHTHER EMBSER l I I . . . i S . . . , w l W , , , . J M During the past year still another high honor was conferred by His Holiness Pope Pius Xll on an out- standing benefactor of Saint Thomas High School, Sir George W. Strake. Two papal decorations had been given him already in 1937 that of Grand Cross Knight of the Holy Sepulchre and in l940 that of Knight of the Soverelgn Mxhtary Order of Malta Now he has been made a Grand Cross Knight of the Order of Smnt Sylvester The Order of Saint Sylvester is the oldest and most prized of the Papal Orders lt has three classes tll Knights Grand Cross C2l Commanders and C35 Knights The decoration is a gold cross of white enameled surface bearing the image of Saint Sylvester Pope and Martyr The badge is the cross of the Order attached to a silver star the ribbon is of black silk with red border e Senior Class the Student Body in general and the Fathers of Saint Basil foin in congratulating our distinguished benefactor on reception of this most recent honor so richly deserved . . . .
