To put such self-government on firm basis it was felt that a written constitution was necessary, With the Principals permission a Student Constitutional Committee was formed made up of fifteen seniors and the class President, Frank Hoffman. Each of the three Senior Homerooms sent representae tives. Flfter many busy early morning sessions the Constitutional Committee produced a splendid docu- ment, the Constitution of the Saint Thomas Student Council. This, it is hoped, will serve as adequate basis for the Councils of future years, President Hoffman immediately put the new Constitution into effect by starting the necessary elections and choosing a Cabinet in accordance with the Constitution. The Cabinet was made up of three seniors: a Vice-President, Hank Perry, the Parliamentarian, Iohn Fleming, and a Secretary, O. E. Clay. The remaining members of the Council were divided into three groups: The ludiciary Committee, the Social Flctivities Committee, and the Student Hctivities Committee. The first of these is composed of two seniors, one junior, a sophomore, and a freshman. lt is the duty of this group to handle those guilty of small misdemeanors and suchlike. The Social Hctivities Committee consists of three membersi two seniors and one junior. lt is the duty of this group to see that dances and other social events are arranged through the Student Council or given help by the Council in one way or another. The Student Hctivities Committee, which is the largest of OFFICERS OF THE COUNCIL lohn Fleming, O. E Clay, Frank Hoffman, Hank Perry ST DET IIUUNIIII. CONSTITUTIONFIL COMMITTEE Back Flow: George Glauser, Morris Surnson, Eddie Robicheaux, Pat Collins, Tom Lyons Middle Row: Pete Lomonte, Bill Burke, George Theall, lohn Malanaphy, Charlie Fischer Front Row: Iohn Fleming, Hank Perry, Frank Hoffman, Leonard Droddy, lohnnie Niscavits the three, is composed of elected members from each of the school clubs and organizations such as the Eagle. the Hquin, Sodality, Band, Sports, Missions, and others. This Committee has the duty of seeing to it that the activities of the various student groups come through the Student Council. ln the past year the Student Council did not carry on all its functions to the fullest extent because of the late date of its formation. ln order to give next years Council an easy start a President has already been chosen. Still, this years Council has not been idle, Hn outstanding event which it promoted was the mid-year Iunior-Senior Ball at the new University of Saint Thomas. Hnother was the problem of settling the lunior-Senior Prom. The staff of the Hquin wishes to compliment and thank the Student Council of Saint Thomas for its splendid cooperation and the Work it did for the entire student body during this past school year. mac DHFT W -E' Jos , - T' THE STUDENT COUNCIL Back Row: George Glauser, Morris Surnson, Tom Lyons, Ed Robicheaux, loe Molloy, Dick Fry, Ed Kuebler Middle Row: Iohn Niscavits, Hank Perry, lack Daft, Iohn McCarthy Front Row: Frank Hoffman, Ken O'Conncr, Leonard Drodcly, Ice Kelly, Pat Collins, Iohn Fleming ft H' ,Nig- '- x.5f x- Qtr GC ctw: r tx fw ? aded a neara ld : 2-l W fd? st af' edcceedmg e S ...D X Leav1ng Del11nd 1 tara ae d snado NVQ: f E 3 Then there appeared ard re a W4WWIu1.. These two ideas are science and democracy. High School investigation of the natural sciences and the social studies of necessity reveals that the world of today is driven on by the scientific ideal and the democratic ideal. Todays world emphasizes that happiness for the human person can be achieved, or at least promoted, by delving ever more deeply into the mysteries of the material universe, by compelling it to yield its secrets. By gaining knowledge of nature's wonders, both physical and biological, a person can free himself from the haunting fear of the unknown. But history and the other social studies make it painfully obvious that human beings do not always get along well together. From time immemorial men have abused and enslaved each other. But the march of democracy must be made to proceed with increasing tempo so that men will stop injuring and preying upon one another. The need of some international and supra-national agency to main- tain peace among the nations of the human family becomes more apparent every day. The blood of the recent war dead and the sufferings of those who have survived demand an end to the international anarchy which has prevailed, more or less, since the break up of mediaeval unity four centuries ago. Pls a matter of plain fact the two above mentioned ideals: that of science, which aims at the con- quest of the material universe, and that of democracy, which aims at the conquest of individual freedom, are not modern either in origin or in inspiration. The natural scientist who by painstaking labor in his laboratory and field investigations achieves such wonders is driven on by the hope of achieving perfec- tion in human life. He believes implicitly that advances in science will contribute to the achievement and maintenance of human perfection. But this very notion of the possibility of perfection for human beings is as old as Christianity itself and therefore not a distinctive contribution of the modern world. lt was the Son of God Himself Who said 'lYou therefore, are to be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect. The champion of democracy is also driven on by implicit belief in the perfectibility of political, social, and economic relations among human beings. He, too, has before his eyes the ideal of human perfection, and he believes that democracy as a way of life will bring this about. But what the pres- ent day, non-Catholic prophet of democracy fails to see is that the very foundations of democracy: social justice and the infinite value of each human person, came into the world as part of the teach- ing of Iesus Christ. Furthermore, these foundations were very much in evidence in the structure of mediaeval institutions, even though the external trappings of democracy, such as parliaments and written constitutions, may have received less emphasis then. By way of contrast we have but to witness the absence of the notion of human terrestrial perfecti- bility in the pagan Orient. There the notion prevails that human history moves in cycles. Hence it matters little what achievements are effected by a given generation since the wheel of time will turn full circle and bring all things back to their starting points anyway. This is the cyclical theory of human progress. In Western civilization, which still draws on the spiritual capital of Christianity, the notion prevails that human history moves more or less on a straight line from the imperfect to the perfect, or at least the desire of human perfection has always been present. This is the linear theory of human progress. The scientific ideal and the democratic ideal, which seem so secular at first sight, actually derive their origin and motive force from the Christian Religion whether this fact is realized or not. It must be the business of a Catholic University in the twentieth century to give to science and democracy the quickening vision of Christian Wisdom so that it may introduce order and organization into them. They will thus be able properly to minister to the ultimate destiny of the human person. The UNIVERSITY OF SHINT THOMQS, which opens this Fall, belongs to an environment which is eminently successful in scientific and technical achievements and which gives every promise of even more success. But man does not live by the bread of scientific and technological accomplishments alone. These latter cannot and will not be neglected by the new University, but their natural subordi- nation to the higher knowledges of philosophy and theology must be made clear, H contemporary writer says: Today the young Hrnerican comprehends the intellectual tradition of which his is part and in which he must live only by accident: for its scattered and disjointed fragments are strewn from one end of the campus to the other. The UNIVERSITY OF SHINT TI-IOMHS aims to provide under- standing of the fragments in relation to the common intellectual tradition of Western civilization perme- ated as it is by the teachings of Iesus Christ. In 1900 the Basilian Fathers began their work in Houston. Now, after forty-seven years, this rapidly expanding city is to have a Catholic university. The work of Father Nicholas Roche, C.S.B., and the other early builders is coming to fruition on a higher level. The Basilians of today are happy to be able to advance that work. Most Reverend C. E. Byrne, Bishop of the Diocese, also sees the fulfillment of a cherished hope. Our Holy Father Pope Pius XII himself has already blessed the new undertaking, and so there is every reason to hope for its success. Prospects for next years H Squad are bright because of the performance of the B. So that these could play as teams, the lntermediate League was formed in l944. lts popularity has increased with each new season, and this year was no exception. By the latter part of September the League was going strong. Teams were formed, and coaches were appointed. Hlthough better football probably has been played, yet the excitement and thrills connected with these games could not be eaualed. Saint Marys, coached by lvlr. l-lajovsky, won the regular season championship by holding an undef feated record for season games. Pllthough they were favored to win the Play-Offs, Mr. Coopers fighting Marquette team copped the title in a surprisingly easy l9-6 win. To climax the successful season, the most valuable players, as judged by the coaches of their respective teams, unexpectedly received letters for their consistent play. Qs of this year, the presentaf tion of letters will become an annual feature of intermediate sports.
