Early in December the call for basketball was issued to St. Theresa cage candidates. Although Coach Homko had but three lettermen. all-city' Bill Roberts, Dee Strong. and Bill Gillmor, the team was not altogether inexperienced. Ex-subs. Vic Calay and ,lim Schulte and B-team grads John Carlone and Tom Schulte proved their value during the season. They were joined by new-comers Bill Haas. Frank Saring. and Bob Winzurk. Together. these boys formed the '51 edition of Musketeer cagers. We got the season off with a bang by defeating the Alumni 40-36. .lim Schulte hit the hoop for 16 points that night. Spirits were high for our initial league tilt with Gesu's Crusaders: but along with high spirits came nervous tension which was the deciding factor in Gesu's 54-33 win. X.-4' , - Sts. Peter and Paul's Panthers were brought to submission for the second time in the season by a score of 35-29. St. Pat's Shamrocks revenged their earlier loss by handing us a 67-40 defeat. St. Ann's forfeit gave us another win. Polishing off the season we defeated St. Nlary's Corsairs 36-34. Next year our Varsity will be missing four play- ers of sterling quality: little Bill Roberts, our Cap- tain, whose scoring was second to none on the teamg Vic Calay, our ball-hawking forward: Bill Gillmor, our center, a deadly scorer, and finally, guard Dee Strong, our unsung heroi' who stuck to enemy forwards like glue. To these boys, to the rest of the team, to Coach Homko and Manager Frank Clark, we, the class of '51, have but one thing to say . . . Congratulations, well done. After the Gesu game our boys settled down. but Lady Luck was not with us and St. Anthonyis Raiders edged us out 32-31. Our first taste of blood came at the expense of Sts. Peter and Paul. The Panthers put up a gallant struggle but the Green and Gold could not be out- done and we defeated them 31-21. Roberts bagged 17 points. The Shamrocks of St. Patis were next to feel our wrath. Gillmor was high point man with 12 markers. St. Annis and St. lVlary's fell victim in rapid suc- cession. Gillmor. Roberts. and Calay were the out- standing scorers. Gt-su's legions again proved to be too hot to handle. The Musketeers got a 63-4-4 burn. St. Anthony's cagers ignored the fact that Roberts scored 21 points and went on to defeat us 68-48.
