HISTORY OF SAINT THERESA SCHOOL Twenty-six years ago St. Joseph's Academy was completed and on Tuesday, the fifteenth of September, 1925, it was formally opened with Mother Marie Louise pre- siding as the first Principal, and five other Sisters of St. Joseph forming the first teaching staff. With the arrival of the Reverend Thomas Comber in October of 1926, work was begun on the Church of the Little Flower. While it was being built, Mass was celebrated in the convent chapel. ln December, 1928, the new Church was completed and dedi- cated. The former Academy became St. Theresa's Parochial School in 1932, when the boarding department was discontinued. That year the enrollment in the school was two hundred students, and the faculty numbered nine teachers under the supervision and guidance of Sister St. Andrew. Also that year the school was accredited by the South- ern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The succeeding principals, Sister Augustine, Sister Norberta, Sister Fidelis, and our present superior, Sister Anna Maria, have guided the school in success and prosperity and have watched its enrollment increase steadily, until now we have over eleven hun- dred students at St. Theresa, and a faculty of twenty-seven teachers. Our athletic pro- gram has broadened and the school has continued to grow. ln 1947 the kindergarten was builtg in 1948 the new cafeteria and the Sisters, con- vent were erected, the office was extended to handle increased registration and a new wing was added to the school building to accommodate the larger enrollment each year. The school grounds have been fenced and last year the football field was equipped with bleachers. A hibiscus hedge, surrounding the entire grounds has been added. Looking back, we see that our school has grown and prospered with every year, under the capable guidance of the Priests and Sisters and all our teachers, and the loving assistance of our parents. We proudly hail our Alma Mater and feel confident that she will progress even more in the years to come. f-Helen Conner , ta 5, Aa , F 4 ,ff 4 REVEREND BERNARD MCGRENEHAN Assistant REVEREND PATRICK J. CLASS FLOWER AND COLORS Of all the flowers growing along the road of life, we, the Seniors. have chosen the Lily of the Valley as the flower of the class because of its beautiful significance. The fragrant-blossomed plant is the true image of the two virtues that have been so strongly stressed throughout our years in school, and which are such necessary weap- ons for defense against the wiles of the world. These virtues are purity and humility. The smooth white petals of the minute bell-like flower reflect the beauty of this first virtue which must become as a sweet fragrance sent out from our souls lingering always throughout our lives and purifying the lives of those around us. The Lily of the Valley, as its name reveals. inhabits inconspicuous places where often only God is there to see and appreciate its beauty. thus exemplifying the virtue which is the cornerstone of all virtues-humility-the virtue by which we acknowledge God as our Creator and our total dependence on Him to Whom we direct our unseen good deeds. As our class colors we have chosen White for purity and Aqua to signify the water flowing from the fount of all grace, Almighty Cod. through the Immaculate Heart of Nlary, to us, giving the graduates of 1951 the strength and courage to carry on in life's school as we have in our years at Saint Theresa-in the love and service of Him Who is Pure and Humble of Heart. Having been credited with two wins, over Trinity Lutheran and St. Pats. by forfeit, we entered our first conference tilt with Cesu. Although we drew first blood, the Crusaders out-conditioned us and the game ended with a score of 25-6 in favor of Gesu. After a week of extensive conditioning drills. we came into our own by defeating a heavier St. Anthonfs team, 14-6. X ti -rf' 'Pvt' -an-1 I 4 31-o 1 F1 C W ' Lied? Zami! St. Ann's Crusaders fell before us by a 58-0 score, and we rolled over Pompano 40-0 in our homecoming tilt. Upsets marked the '50 season. We, as did Army and Oklahoma, fell victim to an inferior foe. St. Mary's defeated us 14-6. We are indeed proud of Vic Calay and Dee Strong who made All-City. 7 Jr' lv-'li :af :faq-nm 42 24466155456 Above kneellng Captam B111 Roberts Standmg Coach John Homko Bob Wlnzurk Tom Schulte ,llm Schulte Frank Sarlng Blll Glllmor Vlc Calay Dee Strong Johnny Carlone Bull Haas and Manager Frank Clark Left: Coach ,lohn W. Although Coach Homko had but three lettermen. all-city' Bill Roberts, Dee Strong. and Bill Gillmor, the team was not altogether inexperienced. Ex-subs. Vic Calay and ,lim Schulte and B-team grads John Carlone and Tom Schulte proved their value during the season. They were joined by new-comers Bill Haas. Frank Saring. and Bob Winzurk. Together. these boys formed the '51 edition of Musketeer cagers. We got the season off with a bang by defeating the Alumni 40-36. .lim Schulte hit the hoop for 16 points that night. Spirits were high for our initial league tilt with Gesu's Crusaders: but along with high spirits came nervous tension which was the deciding factor in Gesu's 54-33 win. X.-4' , - Sts. Peter and Paul's Panthers were brought to submission for the second time in the season by a score of 35-29. St. Pat's Shamrocks revenged their earlier loss by handing us a 67-40 defeat. St. Ann's forfeit gave us another win. Polishing off the season we defeated St. Nlary's Corsairs 36-34. Next year our Varsity will be missing four play- ers of sterling quality: little Bill Roberts, our Cap- tain, whose scoring was second to none on the teamg Vic Calay, our ball-hawking forward: Bill Gillmor, our center, a deadly scorer, and finally, guard Dee Strong, our unsung heroi' who stuck to enemy forwards like glue. To these boys, to the rest of the team, to Coach Homko and Manager Frank Clark, we, the class of '51, have but one thing to say . . . Congratulations, well done. After the Gesu game our boys settled down. but Lady Luck was not with us and St. Anthonyis Raiders edged us out 32-31. Our first taste of blood came at the expense of Sts. Peter and Paul. The Panthers put up a gallant struggle but the Green and Gold could not be out- done and we defeated them 31-21. Roberts bagged 17 points. The Shamrocks of St. Patis were next to feel our wrath. Gillmor was high point man with 12 markers. St. Annis and St. lVlary's fell victim in rapid suc- cession. Gillmor. Roberts. and Calay were the out- standing scorers. Gt-su's legions again proved to be too hot to handle. The Musketeers got a 63-4-4 burn.
