How do I know the ways of all things at the Beginning? By what is within me TAO TE CHING TERESIAN-1980 Saint Teresa Academy Kansas City, Missouri 2 3 4 In the beginning there was a void. A vast space filled only with dreams and expec- tations. There are many such beginnings in a person's life. Freshmen begin the school year with a similar emptiness. They do not know what high school will be like and can only be open to the experiences it will bring. As a freshman begins, so does her locker. The $pace starts as nothing but with each passing day new items are added. The locker becomes a partial scrapbook of her life. Schedules, gym clothes, textbooks, pictures of rock stars-AII show bits of her newness and uniqueness. As the student matures, the contents of her locker change. The gym clothes disappear, the rock bands change and the locker becomes not so novel. Papers are thrown as they are received-ring order forms, college applications, graduation announcements. The neatness is no longer°necessary. Each scrap represents a cherished memory and nothing is destroyed. These scraps represent a past for some and a promise of the future for others. The senior locker is the experience along with the end realization of remembered humble beginnings. 6 Beginnings provide an empty canvas waiting to be painted. Whether muted tones or vibrant flourishes are used, whether it be- comes abstract, realistic, or slightly dis- torted is decided by the individual. The finished product will be whatever that per- son determines. 10 12 15 16 17 18 TERESIAN 79 Michele Mayer, senior, escorted by Joe Orpin, was the 1979 TERESIAN queen at the November 21st dance held this year at the Radisson Muehlebach Hotel. Her attendants were junior Sarah Millard, escorted by Nick Hodes, and sophomore Cindy Lobb, escorted by Steve Foster. Billy Joel's She's Always a Woman to Me, was the theme song for the dance. The band, SLEEPER, pro- vided music for the event sponsored by the 1979-80 TERESIAN Yearbook Staff. 19 The 1979-80 SCO once again spear- headed much of STA's spirit and lead- ership by taking part in an even greater number of school activities. Among its major events, the SCO sponsored the annual WPA dance on Friday, February 15th. The theme, SWEETHEART DANCE, was carried out in the Valen- tine tradition of pink hearts; however, this Women Pay All gathering was given a new twist with the election of a Se- nior Queen and her date to reign over the dance. Seniors nominated them- selves and their dates. Then, the week prior to the dance, pictures of all candi- dates were posted and seniors voted for their choice. This year's couple was Martha Neenan and John Franke. Mu- sic for the evening was provided by TUT and THE SOUL SENSATIONS. Other SCO sponsored activities were Costume Day and Spirit Month, which gave us such lasting traditions as the STA Book of Records and tricycle riding and kite flying contests! This theme was carried through the evening by the fes- tive decorations and the songs of the Advanced Choruses. Un- der the direction of Colette Dennihan, the girls roused the crowd with their renditions of such songs as Kansas City and St. James Infirmary ' The chairpersons of the event were Mrs. Sina Beil and Mrs. Phyllis Bukaty. 38 PARENT DINNER-DANCE 39 This year's Father—Daughter Dance, ad- vertised as Disco with Daddy was held, once again, at the Gold Buffet. The girls and their fathers danced the jitterbug and the bunnyhop, along with the new favorite, the pretzel. Johnny Rollins, DJ, provided the music. The senior dance contest high- lighted the evening. Tracy Edralin and her father were the winners. Karla Houston and Patti Russell combined with their fa- thers to become the runners-up. 40 42 Again this year the STA Choruses entertained the school community with Christmas and Spring con- certs. The Sophomore Chorus, the Ensemble, the Junior-Senior Chorus, the Chamber choir and various soloists sang versions of many songs including For Unto Us A Child Is Born and Sleigh Bells at Christmas, and Teach Me, 0 Lord and Arabesque No. 2 in the Spring. The choruses also attended the Avila Festival. The Sophomore Chorus and En- semble, the Junior-Senior Chorus, Chamber Choir, Stella Quiason, Paula Chappell, and Ellen Balke all received ratings of 1. 43 Freshmen Marjorie Aston Maureen Aylward Patricia Baldasso Bridget Beitling Lora Biersmith Kimberlie Alexander Ann Ammatelli Laura Anderson Heidi Bledsoe Mary Blickhan Melissa Boland Debbie Boyle Lauren Brice Eve Brosnahan Cathy Brown Patty Burke Lorraine Byrd Sondra Campbell 44 Colleen Craig Renee Cramer Carol Crass Diana Creten Jeanine Crookshank Karen Curry Janice Davis Mary Jo Dickhut Susie Donohue Leisa Douglas Maria Dreiling Carla Edralin Lisa Edwards Chris Effertz Jeannie Effertz 45 Ann Fitzgerald Maureen Fitzsimmons Julianne Fortune Linda Fowler Jeannette Frazier Anne Fritzlen Mimi Galey Rachelle Garcia Sharon Garcia Helen Gardner Ann Geisel Aggie Glynn Ann Goodwin Mary Goodwin Kathy Gorman Nora Gray Kate Greene Meg Grimaldi 46 Karen Growney Teresa Guerra Karen Halbhuber Jinny Hamilton Michelle Hare Karen Haynes Maureen Hennessey Margaret Hilboldt Jeannie Hodes Lisa Hughes Geraldine Hutman Becky Johnson Kris Kane Marian Keller Mary Kelly Nancy Kenier Gretchen Koehler Amy Kostoryz Stephanie Kramer Jeannie Latenser Martha Little Suzanne Loeffelholz Stacey Lomax Ann Madden 47 Julie Magrel Nancy Mair Michelle Malone Lisa Manzo Kelly Matthews Jenny McAuliffe Johnetta McFadden Anne McLaury Melissa McNamara Peggy McShane Susan Mercier Margaret Miley Julie Morris Lisa Morroto Maureen Mulcahey Joan Mulligan Angela Murphy Jackie O'Brien Jennifer Ochoa 48 Andrea Ortiz Christine Perez Mary Ellen Pistone Marie Pouroashasb Leeann Pratt Margurita Ratcliff Mary Pat Reardon Laurette Reinhart Mary Rhoades Betsy Rhodes Mary Beth Rice Loretta Richmond Andrea Ritchie Diana Rodriguez Dana Rowland Gina Sampson Amada Sandoval Mary Schmidt Alice Schmitz 49 Karen Tucker Martha Turek Kamin Vernon Alison Scholes Kelly Smith Pamela Snead Mary Solomon Anne Spachman Connie Speese Susan Sterner Amy Stock Pamela Stueve Linda Sullivan Anne Tangeman Carrie Totta 50 Eileen Warner Kathleen Whalen Elizabeth White Sonya White Carolyn Winston Karen Wittman Suzanne Volz Annette Wainstock Erin Wallerstedt Trisha Worth Jami Zapien Ann Zimmer 51 Sophomores Ann Alderman Jennifer Alexander Teresa Baldasso Mary Balestere Ellen Balke Catherine Baumann Peggy Beaven Lorraine Bednar Beth Beil Gloria Bernal Mary Ellen Bessenbacker Jean Biersmith Daneen Blackmon Jeanne Blomster Teresa Bono Laura Borserine Mary Breier 52 Laura Brock Carol Broski When did it all begin ... There was a new coach, Ms. Bode. There were injuries to two im- portant players and the key positions of setter and spiker had to be changed. Still they delivered a spec- tacular performance. With a regular season record of 8 wins to 5 losses, the girls were able to advance to districts. There, the team went undefeated to place first. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the first round at state. At the UMKC tournament, however, the girls won 9 of their 11 games to cap- ture the first place trophy. The JV and Freshmen teams are also to be commended on their fine sea- sons. 73 Basketball Once again this year STA sported Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball Teams, headed by Ms. Sue Christen- son. The teams played opponents like O'Hara, Southwest, Sunset and Hogan and the Varsity team went on to play in the district finals held at Center High School. The Varsity cap- tains were Mary Flaherty and Eileen McGraw, while the Junior Varsity team was headed by Anne McLaury and Mary Carol Schmidt. 74 VARSITY TEAM: Anne Fritzlen, Ann Geisel, Mary Flaherty, Libby O'Brien, Karla Houston, Karen Ireland, Liz Yancey, Ellen Collins, Aunna Baker, Eileen McGraw, Rosie Sullivan, Laurie Smith, Julie Morris. The Varsity team finished second in the dis- trict finals. 76 Varsity and Junior Varsity teams: Jeanne Blomster, Lauren Coleman, Ann Schleicher, Laura Borserine, Jenny McDonald, Susan Sterner, Tish Metzler, Laurie Mair, Liz McQueeny, Kathy Farrington, Ann Fritzlen, Louise Perucca, Mary Sterner, Mary Ann McGannon, Amy Thompson, Suzy Loeffelholz, Michelle Atchity, Lisa Marietti, Molly Mitchell, Maria Dreiling, Susan Hopfi- nger, Teresa Schroer, Ann Goodwin, Loretta Richmond, Maria Manzo, Kelly Smith and Gina Mar ietti. •'si TRACK TEAM: Front Row Lesia Akins, Eileen McGraw, Sue Coppinger, Maureen Aylward, Julie Morris, Jenny Hamilton, Jenny McAuliffe. The Royals game was not the sole attraction. Many STAers and their escorts could be found at Arrowhead Stadium where the 1979-80 Junior-Senior Prom was held. The entertainment was provided by Back Talk. The Grand March began at 10:30, honoring Michelle Peltier and Debbie Lombardino as the junior attendants, and Suzanne Giblin as the Prom Queen. After-Prom was held at King Louie East, where the bowling al- leys and pool tables received much attention. From there, various people had breakfast parties, and then it was home for a few hours of sleep before the picnic the next day. 85 87 RING NIGHT 88 April 15 marked the date when the Class of '81 took its first step toward seniority as they received their class rings at a ceremony hosted by Jane Growney, 1980 Academy Girl. Sister Barbara Verheyen spoke to the Juniors and their parents at the ceremony on the school motto and Fa- ther Jim Ford blessed the rings. Following the ceremony, a reception was held in Donnelly Lounge. 89 90 Jane Growney was elected ACADEMY GIRL for 1980. This is the highest honor bestowed by the Academy to the senior who exemplifies the spirit and tradition of St. Teresa's Academy. Sarah Jo Johnson, Aunna Baker and Susan Coppinger were also nominated for this award. 91 Top Photographs: Susan Coppinger, Salutatorian, and Stella Quiason, Valedictorian, of the 1980 Senior Class.
