The changing seasons remind us of the necessity of growing loving learning ... Every girl who enters the doors of STA ex- periences countless growth “happenings”. She is born to new ideas new facts new expressions of herself and others. The STA girl matures as she learns to ask those difficult questions concerning her life and the world around her. She develops ideas and feelings about herself and others; and finds herself testing those ideas and feel- ings for their truth and wholeness. Drawing on Page 1 of Cat Stevens was done by Mary Ammatelli 2 St. Teresa Academy Kansas City, Missouri 3 new ideas new facets new expressions The SCHOOL COMMUNITY ORGANIZA- TION goal for this year was the promotion of spirit and unity. The first activity, an all-school Mass planned by the faculty, successfully launched us into a year of real spirit and fun. In October the winds were gentle with all the homemade advisory kites; and a special ribbon went to Sr. Michaela’s advisory for the “best looking” kite, while Mrs. Fuhrman’s advisory took the prize for the longest flying kite. On the Friday before Halloween, students paid one dollar to the Missions for the privilege of com- ing to school in full costume. •A Don’t you feel a change a coming from another side of time, breaking down the walls of silence lifting shadows from your mind. Placing back the missing mirrors that before you couldn’t find filling mysteries of emptiness that yesterday left behind. And we all know it’s better Yesterday has past now let’s all start the living for the one that’s going to last. Yes, we all know it’s better yesterday has past now let’s all start the living for the one that’s going to last. Don’t you feel the day is coming that will stay and remain when your children see the answers that you saw the same when the clouds have all gone there will be no more rain and the beauty of all things is uncovered again. And we all know it’s better Yesterday has past Now let’s all start the living for the one that’s going to last. Don’t you feel the day is coming and it won’t be too soon when the people of the world can all live in one room • when we shake off the ancient shake off the ancient chains of our tomb we will all be born again of the eternal womb. And we all know it’s better Yesterday has past now let’s all start the living for the one that’s going to last. Lyrics and Music by Cat Stevens c 1971 FRESHWATER MUSIC. LTD.. (BMI) All Rights Reserved Used by Permission 6 learning—growing remind us that it is impossible to stay the same During the school year, one day a month has been dedicated to FACULTY IN-SERVICE DAYS. Students, parents, and invited guests are generally among the day’s participants. This year the in-service days have been geared toward investigating the future and the changes that the future will bring to STA students. The students have played a key role in the discussions despite their reluc- tance to give up a “free-day”. However, usu- ally after hot coffee and donuts, the group plunges into the program designed by a fac- ulty planning committee. learning—growing- -opening new doors II r i u a D O z; The Hotel President was the setting for this year’s Teresian Dance. The queen, Bobbi Orford, reigned over the dance with her at- tendants. Mary McQuaid, junior, and Ann Cosgrove, sophomore. The all-woman band, KC JUNCTION, provided the music for the evening, including the theme song, “All in Love is Fair”. 14 Father-Daughter Banquet On January 27th, fathers and daughters gath- ered together once again for their annual din- ner dance. The banquet, which was held at the Gold Buffet began with cocktails, followed by dinner and dancing with music by the Boos Bros. The highlight of the evening was the dance contest—this year’s winners were Susie Adams and her father. 16 don’t you feel the day is coming that will stay and remain when your children see the answers The annual Hollyberry Boutique and the Auction are the main money-making activities spon- sored by the Mothers’ Guild and the Fathers’ Force. On December 3, beautiful gifts, handmade by mothers, students, and faculty, were sold at the Hol- lyberry Boutique. Cookies, cakes, and other baked goods were available in addition to a lun- cheon menu. Through the dili- gent efforts of our mothers, the Boutique was a huge success. On the following night it was the fathers’ turn. At the BASH Auc- tion, cars, vacations, dinners with celebrities, televisions, and vari- ous other items were auctioned off to net a grand total of $25,000 for St. Teresa’s Academy. On December 17 18, the Glee Club, Concert Choir, and Sophomore Chorus, under the direction of Jude Guden- kauf, presented their annual Christmas Concert. The Christmas carols ranged from the traditional as in “Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus” to the contemporary: “We Wish You the Merriest.” The soloists were Roberta Gum- bel and Christy Meinhardt. 22 Christmas Concert 23 26 On February 19, parents, teachers, and alumnae gath- ered at the Plaza Inn to honor the class of 1927, of which Mrs. Adah Downey Teasdale, mother of Gov. Jo- seph Teasdale, is a member. The evening of fun began at 7:00 with cocktails, followed by dinner. When dinner was over and the last dish cleared away, the show be- gan. With “The History of STA” as a theme and featur- ing the Advanced Chorus, Concert Choir, and the STA dancers, the performance opened with a rendition of “Kansas City” and continued from there with selections ranging from the “Windmoor Fight Song” to the dra- matic close of “Climb Every Mountain.” Tony Dipardo and his band then took over with music and dancing until 1:00. 27 Close Up On January 30th nineteen STA’ers left KCI with Sr. Rose Mershon for a week of learning and laughter in Washington, D.C. In those few short days in the capitol city they saw all they had expected to see ... senators, buildings, museums, embassies ... but they also grasped so much more. They saw that it is possible for anyone to make an impact on our government. They also realized that our representatives really care about their constituents. 28 The W.P.A. dance in February was a huge suc- cess. This was the first dance to be held in the school gym in ten years. Couples entering the dance were handed a ticket with a number on it along with a Mardi Gras mask. Clowns and mas- ked monsters mingled with the crowd of smiling faces spreading the Mardi Gras theme. In the cen- ter of the gym was a net of balloons which was dropped during the last hour of the night. The balloons popped immediately, spreading confetti around the room. 30 32 33 (Lower center)SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS (left to righQMary Beth Ayl- ward. Students displayed their talents by singing in the Spring Concert, exhibiting art work, recit- ing poetry and recreating scenes from several Broadway plays. Students were also invited to visit art and acting classes during the week. One of the many highlights of the week was the tribute paid to Jude Gudenkauf by the Ad- vanced Chorus during the Spring Concert. Jude retired af- ter four years as choral director and forty years of teach- ing. She was presented flowers and a congratulatory citation signed by Senator Harry Wiggins from the Mis- souri Senate. 88 Fine Arts Week 89 90 Family Picnic May 11 was the date set for the Annual Family Picnic. Prayers for a sunny day were answered and the largest crowd ever turned out. The food, ranging from outdoor grilled hotdogs and hamburgers to baked beans and chocolate cake, was delicious. While parents were relaxing and enjoying the weather, the kids were playing football, frisbee, and having water gun fights. 92 This year’s prom was held at the Plaza Inn International Hotel. Dancing and listening pleasure was provided by the popular band. Grand Slam. Halfway through the dance, the band took a break while the Prom Committee partici- pated in the Grand March. Making the final entrance were the queen, Mary Worm- ington and the junior atten- dants, Kathy Higgins (left) and Nonie Mitchell (right). After-prom, at King Louie West, involved bowling, pool, ice-skating, and pinball until 4:00 in the morning. Prom 1977, as in the past, proved to be as exciting and exhausting as everyone had anticipated. -O ■u King Louie West 95 And we all know it’s better Yesterday has past now let’s all start the living for the one that’s going to last 97 Mary Beth Aylward was chosen Academy Girl 1977 by the faculty and senior class.
