WILLS We, the Senior Class of l978, would like to recognize a man whose immeasurable contributions to the life, spirit, and community of St. Stephen's can never be equalled. A dedicated teacher, an invalu- able advisor, a leader of men, and a friend of all, he is a man strong in his convictions yet open and understanding to those who surround him. Far surpassing his expected duties, for years he has spent hour upon endless hour helping to shape the futures of underclassmen as well as seniors. As students, he has provided us with the precious gift of knowledge. As individuals, he has helped us to realize our potential, instilling within us the desire to succeed and the self-confidence necessary to attain our goals. For this and for all we thank you, Mr. Wills, and we proudly dedicate this yearbook to you. The process of deliberation for the dedication of Scroll '78 was indeed a long and arduous one for the seniors, Although only one person may have the honor of receiving the yea rboak dedication, there are a host of others around us whose presence is dearly felt, and without whom St. Stephen's would surely not be what it is today. These teachers and administrators are an important part of our daily lives, and yet we sometimes take them for granted. For three such people we would like to give a special Senior Recognition, our way of showing them that they are indeed appreciated. .6 xx 2 'NW ff' ' 3 x-vi. l Wh, x in . 4 ' . . 1, H .,1,if-L. ,- ' '71 , 2 - ,.f-'xtcyfag . .-. 4 .jqtrifg if .fi ,ig rg' ijt -gQ5'.j1-:i:li.f3- , ii' ei. x , 'EH 7 it :fi . zz .wC -W 'Lf'-' 1 wwffie f ,im .hula X -vt. He need not have worried. Finishing with a fine 6-3 record, the Saints earned an I.A.C. co-championship with the Landon Bears. However, the Saint's convincing victory over the Bears leaves no room for doubt as to which team was the tr champion. The Saints started the season on the right foot by waxing AA public school Osbourn 32-12. The Saints' scores came on three touchdowns by All I.A.C. back Jim Vosbeck, one by iunior Eddie Thompson, and a pass to tight end Craig Rowinski. At the half the score was tied 12-12, but an inspired Saints'defense, led by All Independent tackle Andy Brown and All I.A.C., All Independent tackle Val Hillman, came out in the second half and shut down the powerful Osbourn offense. Remembering last yeor's game, the Saints travelled to Culpepper with vengeance in mind. Although the Saints came out on the short end ofa 23-6 score everyone at the game knew that the Saints had come to play. The only Saints' touchdown came on a short dive by All Independent running back Honnan Jacob The Big Red started slowly against A George Mason but then exploded with 45 yards on a touchdown pass from Q.B. Rob Wadsworth to All I.A.C., All Independent Stan Freck. The Saints later drove toward the goal line with the drive 1 culminating in a 15 ya rd sco ring pass to Rowinski. After the Mustangs sco red, the Saints were forced to punt. The Mustangs began to drive but were stopped short when Freck picked off a pass. Defensive end Scott Crawford led the defense and All l.A.C. center Army Perry opened holes for the Saints' backfield. Saints: 21-6. For Homecoming, the Saints went up against then undefeated and untied Episcopal who finished the year at 9-1. The Saints broke the ice with a 35 yard scoring toss to receiver Stan Freck, but the Ma roons came back with a long run for a touchdown and a touchdown resulting from a Saint fumble. Then the Saints' defense toughened up and All Independent defensive back Tom Mustin intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a score. Late in the third quarter, lightning struck again when Mustin picked off yet another pass and returned it 35 yards to the 3 yard line. Q.B. Rob Wadsworth took it in from there. Episcopal began a drive late in the fourth quarter and had first and the ten. On first down, end Crawford and D.B.s Freck and Mustin stopped the Maroons for a three yard gain. Second and seven on th seven. Episcopal tried the Saints' left but senior tackle Richard Pleasants made a great tackle on the 4. Third and three to score. The Ma roons tried the Saint right end but it held fast as Mustin made a hard tackle on the 2. Fourth down and two yards for an Episcopal score. One their final play, Episcopal ran off the Saint right tackle but the defense held as cornerback Chris Meloni, safety Stan Freck, tackle Andy Brown, and All I.A.C., All Independent end Bob Webb stopped the runner cold on the 1. The Saints had won the the crosstown rivalry 8-14, , fe- -s . Q l ' i 1 Perry and Freck converge on a Maroon back. Fulcher concentrates as Meloni holds 1 14 The Saints were caught looking ahead when they faced a Bishop lreton team that was obviously playing over its head. The game was played at Wakefield High School on a muddy Saturday night. One Saint drive was halted inches from the goal line and others were stopped within lreton territory. The defense, led by John Lineberger and Ron Robbins, was tough throughout the game as both lreton scores came on broken plays. The loss brought S.S.S.'s record to 3-2. Score of the game: l3-O. A 4 Hifi 'i The Saints opened their l.A.C. season with an impressive l3-6 victory over a tough St. Albans' team. Two long drives, highlighted by passes to Freck and Rowinski, resulted in T.D. plunges by back Hannon Jacob. While the score was close, the game was never in doubt as the defense was in total control. The Saints suffered their only league defeat at the hands of a strong Bullis squad. The Saints scored their lone T.D. on a short run by Jacob as they lost I8-6. The Saints faced a do-or-die situation as they went up against the Landon Bears. The Saints scored first on a 40 yard Wadsworth to Mustin aerial. Jim Fulcher added a field goal to make it lO-lO. Landon held the ball in Saint territory throughout the second half but could only manage one score as defensive backs Freck and Mustin made game saving plays, Final Score: IO-6. After skinnning the Bears, the Saints made the long ride to Sidwell Friends. The day before, many of the players watched as Landon defeated St. Albans and clinched a share of the Conference title. The Saints, as they did all season, performed well under pressure. Rob Wadsworth scored on a keeper in the first quarter. Then the defense took over holding the Quakers to 4 plays or less a series. The Saints left the field at halftime with a 7-0 lead. The Quakers kicked off the second half in a blinding snow flurry. The Saints' defense still held the Quakers scoreless while the offense, behind perhaps the best blocking of the yea r, continued to roll up the yardage. Tom Mustin grabbed a crucial interception on the Saint's iQ yard line, stopping a Quaker drive. Defensive lineman Val Hillman, Scott Crawfowd, Richard Pleasants, Bob Webb and Will Miller stopped most of the Quakers' offense at the line of scrimmage. Hannon Jacob punched in another 6 points at the end of the fourth quarter. The defense scored their first shutout, holding the Quakers scoreless for the last four plays. ll5 'Qu N : . , -c ' -Jax I 71 'T-Anim! mixer-y-' 5: 4 . t ,-2531, v +174 .Z 1 fha - ,- f I 4 X 'P' KFMV nv V ll I . . 4 4 I- -gm 'r.'f, . f. .,. In the first half the offense was able to ack up 23 points and in the third quarter, kicker John Peterson scored his econd field goal of the game making the score 26-O. he last game of the season, against Landon, was a big disappointment. Playing in eavy rain the Saints defense held until the last 6 minutes of the game, when Landon cored twice. Unfortunately for the Saints, the offense couldn't score and they lost 4-O. ll through the year, the Saints showed great ability. This year's Cross Country team at St. Stephen's, filled with personal discoveries, personal victories, and otten team victories, had one major attribute: team spirit. At the beginning of the year, the members of the team all committed themselves to improving, not only on an individual basis, but as a team. The results were often phenomenal. The varsity was led by ca-captains Daryl Jaschen and Will Hollanan, Hallanan, usually close behind Jaschen, was followed by seniors Richard Reid, Brad Freedman, and Rodger Blake, and by juniors Pete Fellows and .left Humphrey. The team finished with a 5-5 record and competed in several at the area meets. This year's iunior varsity, with Mike Novakovic, Mike Gilliam, Win Vining, Andy Boron, and Craig Guth vying for position, toreshadowed what is likely to be a cross country dynasty for St. Stephen's in the not-so-distant future. outstanding 7-l record, team and individual victories in the l.A.C. championship, the members of this team should be very well known throughout the l.A.C. in the next few years. 20 One runner whose graduation will definately leave a gap in the cross country program of the l.A.C. in coming years is Daryl Jaschen. In his senior year, Daryl was All-Alexandria and All l.A.C. He achieved these honors by winning both the Alexandria City Championship and the l.A.C. Championship. ln addition, he was named second team All Metro and first team All Northern Virginia Private Schools. Daryl also placed second in the Palottie Invitational Class A race, twenty- seventh in the Georgetwon Prep Classic Class A race, and fifth in the University of Virginia Class A race. He also finished the season undefeated in dual meets and set a home course record of 15:24 on the three mile course. Several members ofthe cross country team are not mentioned specifically in the article, however, this doesn't make them any less important. These members played an important role in keeping up team spirit as well as striving to meet their own personal goals. In coming years they will be the backbone of strong Varsity teams. Much of the dedication and drive evident in St. Stephen's cross country runners were derived this year, as usual from Coach Osuna, who demands and gets the best from every runner. This season, his assistant, Coach Koach, added his special elements to the team, including an active weight training program. lt takes o special breed of person to coach a team which receives little support and attracts few spectators, but St. Stephen's cross country coaches are two of the finest. The Saint's varsity soccer team this year had a disappointing season in terms of wins and losses. However, in erms of effort, determination, and spirit, this team scored higher than many of those in the past. lt was always ppa rent to the few spectators that the members of the soccer team had no intention of losing and were therefore illing to give their utmost in every game until the final whistle had blown. A vital component of the team was goalie Todd Ruback, who is said by many to be the finest goalie in the I.A.C. n terms of saves of shots on goal, and of his excellent leadership in the backfield, this praise is much deserved. ther members of the Saint's resolute defense included fullbacks Val Hillman, Ted Mathias, David Peete, Jim oomey, Andy Si Sidle, and Will Miller. Providing a solid link between the defense and the offense were halfbacks angford Jordan, David Kern, and Will Hallanon. The ever-persistent forward line consisted of Jim Fulcher, Michael ngelides, Mehmet Uzer, Tom Prior, and a special addition to the team, Chilean exchange student, Juan Balbontin, ho arrived in time to fill the space vacated by Bernie Carr, who missed much of the season due to an unfortunate jury. A good deal of thanks should be expressed to coaches Gary Gardiner and Doug Adams who were willing to train nd support the team through thick and thin. The Saint's soccer team cannot totally be blamed for its poor showing this season. Again, the ridiculous winter occer season was plagued with snow and sub-freezing temperatures, culminated by sloppy mud. This often made roctice difficult if not impossible altogether. The concluding disappointment came when the soccer fields finally ecame dry and playable, and the l.A.C. tournament, in which the Saints had a good deal of promise, was ancelled. l25 Fl ,Ac ,.. f Q xi Q --S . Under the excellent leadership of first year coach John Kraus, and his assistant Rick Babyak, the attitude of the St. Stephen's Varsity basketball team changed from loosing to winning. With this new attitude the Saints enjoyed a good season while playing a rugged schedule including 9 games against teams that were ranked in the area top twenty. The team consisted of a good blend of veteran and rookie players. Returning starters from last year were Craig Rowinski, Richard Reid, Clark New, and Stan Freck. The other starting position was held by Andy Lyons and John Lineberger. Co-Captain, senior, Clark New was the leading scorer while senior, Stan Freck, and Co-Captain, senior, Richard Reid provided inside strength and rebounding. Junior Craig Rowinski provided additional rebound- ing, scoring, and good, unselfish passing. Junior Andy Lyons also added excellent passing and good defense, while John Lineberger aided in scoring and defense. Able bench support at the forward and center positions was supplied by hustling seniors Bill Argerson, David Riley, and junior Pete Combs. Offensive spark was often supplied by sharp-shooting Jeff Cook, while seniors Scott Crawford, Bruce Claybrook and junior Bob Rockefeller provided additional scoring, ball handling, and tough defense. Some of the highlights of the season included a glorious victory over Episcopal High School, a first round tournament victory overSt. AnseIm's, and a successful team trip to North Carolina. Other memorable moments include the many other victories, and close decisions to highly ranked St. Alban's and Georgetown Prep. Special thanks go to the coaches, players, statistician and manager Scott iRicoJ Edgell, equipment manager Mr. Moore, timer Dick Babyak, the cheerleaders and the fans that cheered the Saints to a winning record at home. 130 , L Z is i Y I2 1' 4 Craig Rowinski sinks o free throw. The team competed against Triple and Double A schools, along with the toughest private schools in the area. They easily took the l.A.C. champi- onship, out-sco ring their opponents 289-44. They also took seven individual championships in the tau rnament. The Saints hosted the first, of hopefully many, wrestling tournaments, They took fifth place against seven AAA high schools. The wrestlers took a beating but were for from intimidated. They walked away with a first from Richard Pleasants, a second from Charlie Fairchild, two thirds from Hannon Jacob and Max Ramsey, plus a fourth from Pete Fellows. The team beat Good Council, Metro League Champions, and St. John's at a tri-meet. Coach Herb Soles had a great deal of help from Mr. Freret, Mr. Houk and Mr. Barbee, who has just returned to St. Stephen's, hopefully to stay. This team also had super support from an elite group of fanatically loyal fans. Someone was quoted as saying, lf the wrestling team was as great as their fans they would easily be State Champs. They were almost , but fell short of capturing the State Championship by three points. They did, however, take home nine medals and will come back next year for mo re. Under the able struction of Coach Koach, a group of some six serious lifters sweated through concentrated daily practice essions, working on their strength as well as their technique. These lifters executed the basic Olympic lifts which 'e the standard for competitive Weightlifting. These lifts include: the bench press, the clean and jerk, dead lifts, and 1uats. At the beginning of the season, each lifter set his own goal, whether for competitive lifting, for increased nordination, or simply to remain in top physical shape for football or other sports. Through hard work and mstant lifting, each of the members of the '77-'78 Weight Team has achieved his goal. Blair, The monitors, elected by their fellow classmates, have the task of maintaining a certain degree of law and order throughout the school. They have such manifold duties as keeping the halls clear, monitoring study halls, and monitoring the lower school, library, and lunch room to keep the school running smoothly. This year the monitors did their best to perform these tasks fairly and with a minimum amount of hassle for everyone. Although they receive more than their share of abuse from their peers, they carried out their assigned duties well, not out of a desire to cause trouble for their fellow students, but out ofa sense of responsibility and ci desire to maintain and improve the school for all its members, students and faculty alike. l5l mor C ozmcil 'NW' Sitting U to rl: J. Hamilton, D. Peete, J. Lineberger, D. Jaschen, A. Blair, R. Wadsworth, R. Reid, T. Mustin. The Honor Council has always been an integral part of St. Stephen's. Since its founding, the Honor Council has served to uphold the integrity and represent the morality of the student body. As the Honor Code states that no student shall lie, cheat, or steal, or withhold information concerning those who do, the purpose of the council has been to determine the innocence or guilt of those accused of violating the code. However, the Honor Council and the Honor Code are only as effective as the student body permits. Consequently, each student must act as a member of the Honor Council, responsible for living within the boundaries of the code and for exposing those who may take liberties with it. The i977-78 school year proved to be one more example of how an effective honor system can only benefit the members of a community. The members of this year's council were seniors Rob Wadsworth, Tom Mustin, Daryl Jaschen, Richard Reid, and David Peete, and juniors John Lineberger and Jay Hamilton. The Honor Council was headed by chairman Andrew Blair. l52 Student Council .a ' if-'fi'-1 ' l ,jf 4, H.,- . lificwim. f' . 'V ' ,rf--H.'l5i:' 5 Elbffk l Lu 1. President David Peete and Vice-President Jay Hamilton led the council through the year with their ideas and actions. The council was able to get the Pepsi machines installed in the athletic wing and organize the dances forthe yea r. lt is being looked into if more tables could be put in the cafeteria to ease the burden ofthe lo rge amount of seniors and juniors who must eat at school due to the new ruling. The council had o meeting about once a week this year and was able to promote a general air of well-being throughout the school and ease f th tensions brought on by the beginning ot the school year. There is o good outlook on the part of next year's council and some o e part of this should be credited to the actions of this year's council. For us it is the last yea r. We will leave St. Stephen's with many fond memories. Think back a moment on all that we have seen and done this year - SSS l8 vs. EHS l4 . . . the Homecoming Dance with its undercover chaperone . . . Rev. Doty's convocations and the Ambassador's problem with alcohol . . . Cookie's thoughts on Male and Female . . . pinball at the l l . . . our three week vacation . . . rented party rooms . . . Holiday Club lfor those who can remember itl . . . Albert Marland Day . . . lOOth Night with Dave's home movies? . . . Rodger's disrupted speeches . . . the collapse ofthe senior lounge . . .and even an occasional class or two. All these were an important part of our year, and we will long remember them. ln the years that we have been here, the school has grown immensely, and we have grown with it. Now we are to leave. What the world will hold for us we cannot say - but we do know that the Class of l978 has left its mark forever on the history of St. Stephen's School.
