X Mgt' 'Q Time, an elusive, subtle concept . . . never fully grasped understood, or appreciated . . . until it's spent. Yes, the sand at the bottom of life's hour glass can never be recovered. But if this publication is to have any true , meaning or purpose it must present a series of imprints of images a moment captured in the photograph or in the printed Words. Let this book then be a collection of impressions about life in a community for one year. What? You say this philosophizing is getting a bit ponderous? Maybe you're right. O.K. then, settle back, relax and just enjoy the memories . . . the memories . . . I M ,r gil . is f 1 l xi! 7 F fix - Qin I F ' -,' - ' - 1 ' T ' W .il It .f7- alla ,P- iq ' t i -A. I .. . Frederick the Great 7 For the Senior Class of 1977 the decision concerning the yearbook dedication came about as the result of a long process of debate and thought. The final choice reflects the c1ass's respect for a man of high character and integrity, a man whose keen and penetrating mind seeks to correct flaws in human nature as well as to draw attention to them, to improve defects in systems as well as identify them, a man whose wide range of personal interests range from politics and literature to music, indicating the importance of breadth as well as depth of interest. Such a man is Richard N. Taliaferro, Ir. He possesses these qualities as well as others. He is a calm voice in a sea of dissension, stressing activism as well as a contemplation. He is an at times stern disciplinarian, yet often brims with humor and comradarie. He is an everflowing source of counsel when it is needed and can take advice when it is given and most importantly he is always ready and willing to sacrifice his time for the benefit of others. We formally recognize his years of contribution in this community by dedicating this yearbook to him. 8 m 'CX 'G . AJQJ- -... It wasn't long before the first tragedy occurred, however. Ed Jones, the mainstay of the offensive and defensive lines, was lost for the reason of a knee injury incurred at preseason camp. Having to shift positions a bit to accommodate the loss, the Saints eagerly plunged into the season by taking on the awesome Bishop McNamara Mustangs. The Saints found they weren't ready mentally or physically to challenge the Mustangs and were trounced in a day where nothing would go right - 34-0. Not quite over the shock of the first game, the team travelled to Culpepper the following week to meet the Blue Devils. Lacking the necessary confidence to play up to their potential, the Saints again sputtered, and fell to a team that really was no better than they - 52-18. Knowing that a stimulus was needed to spark the team, the captains and seniors began a series of team meetings at players' houses to keep up morale and get the team ready to play. The meetings turned the tide as the whole team lived up to its potential in thrashing the Mustangs. The offensive line blew open holes and the defense posted a shutout as Player of the Week , lim Vosbeck, rushed for four touchdowns en route to the 42-0 victory. In the all-important High School game the Saints were determined not to lose to the boys and although they ended up in a draw, it was this determination that fired up the defense to its best performance of the year. Byrne Murphy, Scott Crawford and Rob Waggener excelled on defense, which held time and again inside their own thirty, as the Saints had to settle for a tie in a game everybody involved knew they deserved to win, 0-0. The following week in practice, the team suffered a second near fatal blow as co-captain Mark Hughes was lost for the season with a broken hand. With the team's two best players out, both from the line, the Saints had an uphill battle the rest of the season. Against Bishop Ireton the offense registered another lopsided score as they literally ran over the Cards. Coach Thompson credited the victory to the brilliant work of the offensive line of Val Hillman, Bryan Lipps, Griff Thomas, Bill Perkins and Player of the Week Byrne Murphy. The defense narrowly missed its third straight shutout in stomping the Cards, 28-6. With confidence and momentum on their side the Saints opened the I.A.C. competition with the homecoming game against the best St. Albans team in years. The defense again rose to the occasion, forcing the turnovers, led by Player of the Week Derek Browner's three interceptions, and keeping their strong running attack in check. Hannon lacob burst through the line for sixty-seven yards for the decisive touchdown in the first victorious Homecoming game in six years, 15-7. The feisty and vastly improved Bullis team were the Saints' next opponents. Both offense and defense sputtered in the first half, with the defense coming up with the big play when needed. But it was the offense, behind the running of lim Vosbeck and passing of Robbie Wadsworth, which ate up the clock and scored the lone touchdown in the 7-0 win. In a very sloppily played game in which the Saints couldn't quite get on track, a strong Landon team handed the Saints their first loss in five games. The excellent pass defense of Karl Lundeberg, Chris Meloni, Derek Browner, Craig Rowinski and Rob Waggener didn't allow a single completion. But the Saints' inconsistency cost them the I.A.C. crown 19-0. The season's finale typified the guts and determination style with which the team played all season. David Mast was all over the field in yet another shut out for the Saints. It was Doug O'Brien's spectacular touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter that broke the deadlock and iced the victory for the Saints, 6-0 v. Sidwell Friends. It was a season anybody would be proud of just by the 5-3-1 record. But considering the adversities the team overcame - the two best players lost, the two crushing defeats early in the season, and the lack of confidence by all - the season was highly successful. Losing only one game in the last seven and narrowly missing the I.A.C. crown is the basis for Coach Thompson's statement, It was the most satisfying year I've ever reached. The players would like to thank Messrs. Biddle, Baumberger, Gardiner and Thompson for their unending patience and hours upon hours of work which was the key to the season's success. A special thanks to Coach Gardiner for giving so much of his time, which was demanded so much at school and at home. They seemed to be jinxed by rainy weather, five of their seven games being played on muddy fields. The Frosh had a very tough schedule having to play schools such as Georgetown Prep, O'Connell, and Landon. To these teams they suffered disheartening losses. In their first game against Bishop Ireton the young inexperienced team was unable to pull everything together. Costly mistakes, such as fumbles, kept the offense from striking as often as they Wanted to. These types of problems hindered the team throughout the season. In their next game against Episcopal the Freshman had to play juniors and Sophomores who were much bigger than they. Although the team was unable to score offensivly, the defense was superb. They kept the Maroon scoreless the second half by holding them on the five yard line for four plays in succesion. Although the season was not victorious, the young team had seen what the other side of football was like, and had matured greatly from it. The coaches had seen much talent and knew the players would become even better in the near future. Some of these players include Dick Hazel, co-captaing Clyde Turpin, Andy Mehan, Paul Butler, Steve O'Brien, these are just some ofthe players who made up the teamg there were many others who also contributed. , Z N .4 . Even those of us who see the finish line long after it has been worn away, are proud to be members of the team. Cross Country is not an easy sport, and it does not possess the glamour and ostensible awards of the big name sports like football and basketball: but these deficiencies notwithstanding, a runner is never sorry for having participated. Perhaps the runner's attraction to Cross Country can be attributed to the feeling that the high level of endurance and achievement intrinsic to running is something that most people cannot hope to attain. The climber might scale the mountain because it's there, but the runner climbs the hill because no one else will. A sample of the extreme dedication and profound desire which creates good runners can be found in the persons of Greg Burnard fSr.J and Daryl Iaschen Ur.J. Their reasons for running may be personal, but their results are obvious. Greg, very successful in years past, this season placed 9th in the Class 'C' race of the Georgetown U. 5 -- ' 4 - - -'. 5.-' -1. Invitational, 2nd in the Alexandria City Championships, and 46th out of 500 in the Georgetown Classic fthe largest race on the east coastj. Daryl placed 2nd in the Class 'C' race at Georgetown, 3rd in Alexandria, and 64th in the Classic. Daryl was chosen to be a member of the 3rd All Northern Virginia team, a great honor for a junior. The 1976 season reached culmination with a spectacular performance by Greg when he came from behind to take first place in the I.A.C. championship race. This led to his being selected on the All State Private Team. Daryl finished in 10th place and the rest of the team did sufficiently well to give St. Stephen's a reasonable fourth place overall. Following Greg and Daryl on the squad are Seniors Paul Schwartz, Paul Brier, Steve Muller, and Iuniors Will Hallanan and Roger Blake. The Runners of the future include sophomores Steve Payne, jeff Humphrey, Bill Hoiles, Craig Boyett, and freshmen Chris Mast, Caldwell Dugan, Karl Honkala, Mike Gilliam, Steve Holman and Kit Marnane. 69 15 8: Under K .. With strong support from the bench, the Saints finished with a win over the boys at E.H.S. - 60 to 48. i uc FAC Y ' A 3 A? 4 'Q - A J- . Unfortunately, the Saints started off poorly with a cold streak of five straight losses. Presently, their record is a disappointing 0-5. Height was definitely a disadvantage for the Frosh, who possess only two big men, Rob Freck and Brian Wally Walters. The team compensates for its small size by using the quickness of their three guards and forwards, joey Everly, Rod Carew, and Steve O'Brien. The St. Albans team thoroughly dominated the Saints. Incapable of stopping the Bulldogs' big men, the Saints changed their tactics but were still unable to come back. Following their loss to Bishop lreton, the Saints matched up against Landon. After a shaky first half, the Frosh rallied from behind to lose by only three, 54-51. The Freshman team has the talent but has not yet put it together. Under the coaching of Mr. Thompson and Mr. Berg, the Frosh will prove to be great competitors in years to come. Hallinan, Coach Gardiner, Coach Ful er. Winter . . . the time of year when old Lord North breathes his frigid breath and coats the hills with a mantle of snow. It is a time of skiing, ice skating, and staying indoors with sports like Basketball and Wrestling. But Soccer in the winter? It is, as any reasonable person can see, a gross error on the part of the I.A.C. to permit the playing of the world's largest spectator and participant sport in the winter, but alas, it must be tolerated. The '76-'77 year is a fine example of mismatch between winter and soccer. Our Saint Stephen's Soccer team has been into the season for nearly three months and has completed a grand total of four matches thus far. The team itself is a carbon copy of last year's team, excluding one graduate. Leading the Saints into battle this year are the crafty Giles Beeker and Marty Rengers on the wings with All I.A.C., All Metropolitan Karl Lundeberg operating in the center forward spot. Backing the offense up is the skilled and promising David Kern, with tough Bucky Lewis, Eric the Pearl Miller, Tom Prior, Will Hallinan, and Ricky Simpson, all competing for the halfback corps. The defense is manned by Disco Dave Peete, Greg Hollingsworth, Val Hillman, and Riley Bates, with goalies Steve Tighe, Ahmet Uzer, and Tony Alexis rounding the squad out. Through' the new European approach to the game, introduced by Coach Gardiner, the Saints have perhaps the most talented Soccer team the school has ever fielded. At present, the eager Saints are busy practicing indoors in the art-music wing, waiting for the Spring thaw which will undoubtedly usher in some victories for the St. Stephen's Soccer team. The grapplers ended their dual meet season with a 12-2 record, losing only to Good Council and a very strong O'Connell team. The Saints, led by seniors Dave Fellows, Griff Thomas and Mark Hughes, completly dominated the I.A.C. and chalked up victories over the Single A State Champions, Brentsville, and our friends across the street, Episcopal. In the first tournament of the year at Bishop Ireton, the Metro Holiday Invitational, the grapplers had one champion, Dave Fellows, two runner-ups, Pete Fellows and jeff Humphrey, and three thirds, Griff Thomas, Charlie Fairchild and Hannan jacob. The next tournament was the I.A.C. Tournament where the Saints completely dominated, placing ten wrestlers in the finals and crowning seven champions. Champions were jeff Humphrey, Eddie Thompson, Dave Fellows, David Berg, Hannan jacob, Griff Thomas and David Branch. Holding the runner-up positions were Mark Hughes, Dick Hazel and Richard Pleasants. The Saints entered the St. Albans Tournament with great momentum and placed second in a strong field of seventeen teams. The grapplers crowned two champions, Griff Thomas and Richard Pleasants, a runner-up, Charlie Fairchild, a third, Dave Fellow and a fourth, Jeff Humphrey. The Saints also captured the fastest pin trophy with Richard Pleasants' 27 second pin and the most pins trophy with Griff Thomas' three first-period pins. Next it was off to Woodberry Forest for the Virginia State Prep. School Wrestling Tournament. Three state champions, Dave Fellows, Griff Thomas and Richard Pleasants, two runner-ups, Charlie Fairchild and Ieff Humphrey and a third, Eddie Thompson were crowned, and the team placed second in standings, only 71!z pts. behind the first place team, Blue Ridge. The team rest all of its success on the fine coaching of Herb Soles and Roger Barbee, whose dedication to the sport is never ending. The 1976-77 Wrestling team would like to thank both coachs for all there time and help. Next year's team will miss the seniors but with help from up coming senior, Richard Pleasants, and other promising under classmen the Saints will be as strong as ever. Among the young track aspirants contributing to this collection were John Chace, Herby Hughes and Dave Wilkes - hurdlersg Greg Burnard and Daryl Iaschen - distance men and of course Bill Perkins and Steve Minnig who led the team to multiple field event victories. The upcoming winter and spring track teams of '77 also promises an equal amoung of ribbons and trophies, employing hurdlers Iohn Chace, Steve Minnig, Karl Lundeberg and Iim Vinesg sprinters Brian Lipps, Lindsay Merrill and jim Vosbeckg distance men Burnard and Iaschen and as always Bill Perkins pacing the inferior competition in the shot and discus. Best wishes to the graduating members of the '76 season and good luck to those on the one of '77. Baseball '77 This year's baseball team promises to be one of the most offensive and high scoring teams in the history of the school. The Saints have eight starters returning from last year's team. The only weak- ness that appears in the Saints' lineup is at pitcher. The team has no experienced pitchers returning this year. The outfield will once again be the team's strongpoint. This year's outer defense features three-year man, Ed jones, four-year starter Eric Miller, and two-year starter, Marty Rengers. The in- field will be led by Hannon Jacobs and Rob Long. Scott Crawford will battle Rick Nagle for the catcher's position, once again. The dynamic duo of Eric Miller and Marty Rengers will again be batting in the number one and two spots in the lineup. Last year Miller and Rengers, between them, led the Saints in every offensive category. These two, coupled with the Saints' hard-hitting leftfielder, Ed jones, and powerhitter, Charlie Engh, should carry the Saints to many a victory. Seniors Dave Chapman and Bill Franklin led the team with exceptionally solid play along with Sophomores Bill Pascoe, Robbie Wadsworth, Richard Reid, and Dennis Spirides and Freshman superstar Andy Lyons. A good number one player and depth led to a winning team. The '76 team had this and surprised many by beating stronger teams. For 1977 the team has Andy, Bill, Robbie, Richard, and Dennis returning. .Q- Golf W ,.v. Row Two: Paul Schwartz Ieff Humphrey Scott Crawfor l.ong, lohn Lineberger, lay Hamilton, Gordon Barnes, Eric Devaney. This year's Student Council, as opposed to the previous year, stressed student participation and school spirit more than the legislative aspect of school government. Under the leadership of its President, Byrne Murphy, the Council initiated several new programs in areas that it felt were sorely needed. A Big Brother program was started for all new students to the school to help orient them to St. Stephen's and to make it a bit easier for them to start out. The Homecoming tradition was resurrected with floats et al. The Interscholastic Activities Committee, founded the year before, was formed again this year and saw a considerable amount of business setting activities with other schools such as multi-school sponsered dances, ski trips, exchange, programs, etc. Another program was the Recognition Program whereby the Council formally recognized the members of the St. Stephen's community who it felt had contributed significantly to the school. The Council also performed smaller tasks, but just as important, which it thought would benefit the school, such things as bringing in outside speakers, providing the long-called-for Student Suggestion Box, arranging for the acquisition of benches, in the courtyard and trash receptacles in needed areas, and posted all articles concerning St. Stephen's on the front bulletin board to keep the students abreast of things. But perhaps one of the biggest accomplishments was the laying of the ground work for the acutely needed senior lounge. In conclusion the Council was more active than in previous years, more so than many students may have realized. d Honor Council 'RS- Left to Right: Mark Hughes, Mr. Goodwin, Steve Tighe, Andy Blair, Byrne Murphy, Doug O'Brien lChairmanJ, Greg Burnard, Richard Reid, Dave Fellows. Established years back by the student body to maintain the personal integrity and honor of the students of St. Stephen's, the Honor Council convenes each year to fulfill that purpose. Under the direction of faculty advisor Mr. Goodwin, the Council seeks to carry out its purpose through the application and observance of the Honor Code, the basis for student conduct at St. Stephen's. The Council's task then, though small in name, is aided greatly with help from the students themselves. For the Council's eight members - two juniors and six seniors - form but. a small part of the whole of those responsible for upholding the Honor Code, namely, the entire student body. 4 X onitors fs. if gf! 1 Q X , l I lv ' . The monitors are a select group of seniors and juniors whose thankless task is to help maintain a modicum of order in the school halls and on the grounds. Contrary to popular belief the monitor's chief goal is not to hassle the students but to achieve a minimum level of noise and to quell other, more boisterous activities. The monitors also provide some degree of personal safety to the students in breaking up fights and other forseeable situations which might result in personal injuries. With these priorities in mind the monitors go about their daily duties often under a barrage of abuse lverbal and otherwisej from the students. Keep in mind that the monitors are there to help you and that the more cooperation you give them, the easier and more efficiently they can operate with a small amount of inconvenience to anyone. This year's Hop Committee was one of the most successful of past yearsg it sponsored activities ranging from the Homecoming Dance to a Disco Dance with WKYS radio station. The Hop Committee was divided into three groups with two students heading each group. These groups were each assigned a different taskg decorating, cleaning up, or selling tickets at each dance. Every group did an excellent job providing the students of S.S.S. with very successful dances. This success rests greatly on the shoulders of D. Fellows, D. O'Brien, C. Engh, B. Lewis, B. Lipps, and S. Tighe, all of which were heads of groups. Many thanks to Mr. Smith, the Hop Committee sponsor, faculty and especially to the Mother's Club whose help the Hop Committee deeply appreciated. '10 , . wb gl!! I. Re d Key Club ' m--'--- The Red Key Club is a dedicated Red Key Officers purpose service organization for the school. Participation has been excellent with many putting in time at the Pepsi stand and helping at Red Key co-sponsered dances. The constitution has been rewritten and has brought a new vitality to the work of the club. Led by President joe Lamb, Vice President Griff Thomas and Secretary Roger Blake, the year has been a successful one for Red Key. Nevertheless, these difficulties were gradually overcome as enough novice thespians enlisted to shore up deficiencies in the ranks and finally the group managed to pull together for their true cause: a solid performance on stage of Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker which included among its dramatic personae in leading roles our own David Brown, jimmy Vines, David Singleton, Riley Bates, lim Toomey, George Wooditch andfrom St. Agnes: Page Iones, Cathy Sheets, Susan Moore, Courtney Woodman, Kate jones, Lisa Ulatowlesky and Mardy Carr. The Cast would also like to take this time to thank Vice President of Encore, jimmy Vines who skillfully engineered the lighting arrangements and President Joe Lamb whose presence was felt by cast and stage crew alike although he himself was rarely seen. Booster Club This year's Booster Club had an excellent student body turnout. Under the leadership of President Iulian Burke and Ioe Ra Ra Lamb, his assistant, the club was able to have a more organized booster section. At this time I would like to express my deep appreciation to the faculty, students, and parents of St. Stephen's. Keep the spirit going in the future! 108 Row One: Parker, Galloway, Col. Left to Right: Krahulec, Galloway, Mills, Boling, Iaschen, Shepard, Miller, Goldberg, Schwartz, Blake, Miller, Glick, Brown. Sailing Club This year the sailing club enjoyed a much larger membership than in the previous year. Members ranged from beginning sailors to the old pros. Berk Shervin, Vice Commadore of the club, was a member of the winning team of the Sears Cup, a national competition for three man teams. The Sailing Club is looking forward to many activities in the near future, including another team race with Christ Church School and even, providing Col. Parker is willing, a St. Stephen'slSt. Agnes cruise. On the whole the sailing 'club is a collection of modern day mariners getting out on the water whenever they can. Outing Club The purpose of the Outing Club, founded this year by Paul Schwartz and John Shepard, is to encourage and to aid students who have outdoor interests. It provides a place for students to exchange valuable information, to share interests, and to find partners for their expeditions. Although the Outing Club offered no school sponsered programs this year, it is hoped that in future years our club will be able to coordinate with St. Agnes' Outing Club and provide many fine opportunities for the interested student to learn a new pastime. 109 Goldberg, Schwartz, E. Row Two: Waggenhoffer, Goldberg, Schwartz, Abramson. 110 Emanon This year's EMANON, our school literary magazine, followed in the grand tradition of past years and put out another brilliant issue. The EMANON was led by zany Paul Goldberg, radical Paul Schwartz and artistic Karl Lundeberg with Mr. Reed as the moderator and steadying influence of the group. Many fine young talents were discovered and the old talents produced again. We hope that this year's EMANON is truly reflective of the talent hidden behind the walls of St. Stephen's. Deacon Although hampered by a decreased budget, this year's editors of The Deacon, Paul Goldberg and Paul Schwartz, were able to turn out several fine issues. The Deacon covered a wide range of stories, varying from sports to alternative measures to deal more effectively with the Honor Council, all written with the incisive objectivity expected of St. Stephen's journalists. This year's staff also had more contributors than in any recent year. We hope that in the future, 1976-1977 will be looked upon as the year that Deacon experienced a rebirth and revitalization in its drive to regain its rightful prominence as one of the school's most important publications. Computer Club In only its second year, the ' ' 'A 'T ' Computer Club, a conglomerate of leftover math whizzes and calculatory prodigies, has gained much notoriety here at St. Stephens. The club itself is run and organized by a select group of computer geniuses know as The Core. This year's gallant crew of Core members consisted of Will Deatrick, Roger Blake, Erich von and Bill Blake who managed to run the club with a reasonable degree of proficiency. The club meetings were spent mostly teaching new members about Computer Club - 1st row:.H. Craig, R. Blake, S. Cleary, R. Lasley, D. Iaschen, W. Blake, P. Butler. Whenever club members aren't involved in some deep intellectual enterprise, they can usually be found at the teletype playing a game of Star Trek. lt's Academic 1976 This year's lt's Academic team has a new faculty advisor in Mr. Renner. He has been drilling the team rigorously, and he expects a much better showing than that of last year. There are eight people fighting it out for the three ' Hume gum positions, and this includes the two returning veterans, Paul Schwartz and Ahmet Uzer. The - squad has been meeting since school began, The attendance, as well as the enthusiasm, has been 1 ' excellent. Last year's team suffered N due to lack of quickness - the other schools consistently beat us to the buzzer. The practices have helped to ameliorate this weakness, and perhaps, eliminate it altogether. : . 5 111 CONNIE Co-eds jill Rubask and Caroline Reed Nancy Thompson Lisa Marshall Betsy Ramsey Tammy McCrory Maryanne Hylton We sincerely apologize for the poor coverage of the Co-eds and any discomfort or nightmares caused thereof.
