THOMAS BOYLE GALE 1895-1963 Col. Thomas Boyle Gale, Annapolis class of '17 and thirty years a Marine officer on active duty, came to St. Stephens in 1947. For sixteen years, he was a basic part of the structure of our school's life. I-Ie was the gentleman who, for years, stepped forward at Commencement to award the annual prize for his mathematics department. As Honor Council advisor, he set a standard of service to be striven for by his successors. He was a faculty mem- ber of the St. Stephen's chapter of the Cum Laude Society. He was an able and Lmderstanding teacher with a remarkable instinct for the mood of his classes. He was respected by everyone -- by his colleagues, the students at St. Stephen's and by his contemporaries at the Naval Academy, to whom he was everyone's favorite classmate. Col. Gale's death at the age of 68 last October 6 was a loss made no less acute by its inevitability. For us, it meant the loss of a gentleman, of an astute mentor and of an esteemed friend. Col. Gale's epitaph, one which follows his own favorite advice f Be concise! J, comes most justly from his service comrades: A finer man never walked. 18 aww. . , ' fc -ful' v '1 . - 1 l . 1' ' - pf . ,. , -. . QL,-L ' im'-. x, : Student Council SEATED: Chandler, Peck, Whitton, Pace, Moreau STANDING: Capt. Iaudon, Sebrell, Squires, Palmer, Reynolds, Watson, Fraley, Sherman, Mr. Gibson. The purpose of the Student Council is to insti- tute and maintain self-government in the student body and to help develop a satisfactory relation- ship between students and faculty. The greater emphasis on its obligations to the students has re- sulted in a more responsible attitude toward problems arising in the student body and in student- faculty relations. It has been the Council's hope and objective that the students will use the Coun- cil to an ever increasing degree to voice their opinions, and that the administration will use it to speak to the students. The Captain gives advice Honor Council SEATED:Pa1mcr, johnson, Edsall, Reynolds STANDING:M1-. Goodwin, Plank, Savage, Shomo, Watson, Mr Gibson. The Honor Council has the important responsi- bility of administering the Honor Code. The Honor Code at St. Stephen's is based on the belief that students can successfully accept the responsibility of establishing and maintaining high standards in school life. Through the years, the Honor Council has performed the invaluable services of instilling a keen sense of right and wrong in every student and of creating a school spirit that holds the re- spect of all who come in contact with it. But I DO like the Honor Council Monitors SEATED: Kreutzer, Pace, Reynolds STANDING: Whitton, Peck, Hatch, R. Johnson, Lynch, Watson, Plank, Mr. Gibson. Monitors are the body responsible for student self-discipline. In only its fourth year, the monitor system has developed into a firm and integral part of St. Stephen's life. lt is because of the strong and responsible attitude taken by its twelve student members that the system can, for the first time, be considered solid and effective. There's a monitor over where? In various ways, it has helped to increase the school spirit and the attendance at athletic contests. Members of the club have led cheers at games, put together programs, parked cars, and per- formed many other services aimed at making our games more enjoyable. Perhaps the greatest task that any organization in a school can undertake is the production of a yearbook, and the production of this year's SCROLL has not been an exception to this. The members of the SCROLL staff have worked particularly hard on the year- book with the hope that this SCROLL will be the best one yet published. We wish to single out several members of the staff without whose perseverence the SCROLL would never have been what it is. These include Tom Watson for his patience and hard work as editor, Ken Bousquet and his crew for their excellent photography, 8 Bruce Duerson for coordinating the business. We hope you will enjoy this year's SCROLL. No, I don't think we should put that in. The second half, however, was a different game. The Saints capitalized on a Ft. Hunt fumble and quickly scored on a twenty yard drive. In the fourth quarter, Freret caught a low pass from Gilpin, but Ft. Hunt came back with a 60- yard pass to bring the final score to 12-6. ,,. ,,i , M ,AAI . Av. l, . ..,. ,- .-...Q JBA.-Am ST. CHRISTOPI-IER'S 20-6 St. Stephei-1's, playing its first home game of the season, tried to break the St. Christopher's jinx but lost 20-6. The Big Red beat St. Christopher's in every department but scoring. Their passes riddled our defense and accounted for all three touch- downs. Our only score came in the third quarter when Gilpin completed a 38-yard pass to Palmer on the two yard line. On the next play fullback Longeway plunged over for the touchdown. LANDON 22-16 The Saints lost their first I.A. C. game to a powerful Landon team. We scored first when Gil- pin threw a 5-yard pass to Steve Garnett in the end zone. Landon came back strong in the second and third periods with three long touchdowns. The Saints' offense was stymied until the fourth quarter when Gilpin connected with Freret on a 48-yard touchdown pass. Once again the Saint's defense played well. Except for three long runs, the Bears were limited on offense, and the game was mostly a defensive battle. SIDWELL FRIENDS 8-6 Still seeking their first league win, the Saints traveled to Sidwell Friends. We opened up the scoring in the second quarter when Palmer grabbed a pass from Gilpin and ran 52 yards for the touch- down. The Saints' defense played well throughout the game, but a 30-yard run, Sidwell's longest gain of the day, accounted for their touchdown late in the third quarter. The extra point was good, and Sidwell won by the close score of 8-6. r 1 GEORGETOWN PREP 42-6 Seeking their first league win, the Saints traveled to defending champions, Georgetown Prep. After taking the opening kickoff to the Saints' 28, Prep fumbled and the Saints took over, and 14 plays later scored their first touchdown. Prep quickly countered with two long mms, a pass, and an interception to make the score 30-6 at half- time. Never again did the Saints make a serious threat with Prep controlling the ball most of the time and winning 42-6. CHRIST CHURCH 6-6 looking for their third win, a determined Red team played Christ Church. Once again, our de- fense played a tough game, holding Christ Church to just 99 yards on the ground. The Saints scored midway in the first quarter when Palmer raced 28 yards with a pass from Gilpin. In the second half Christ Church drove SO yards to tie the score at 6-6. In the closing minutes our determined drive was stopped by an intercepted pass at the five yard line, ending the score at 6-6. ST. Al.BAN'S 12-6 Playing in a freezing rain, the Big Red lost its fourth game to a fast St. Alban's team, On the first play of the game, Longeway raced 73 yards a and gave the Saints a quick 6-O lead. St. A1ban's, however, retaliated with two touchdowns, making the half-time score 12-6. Neither team was able to score in the second half although St. Alban's controlled the ball most of the time. ST. JAMES 16-30 Sixteen seniors ended their high school foot- ball career with a lopsided 30-16Nwin over St. James. Stu Wolf scored the first touchdown on a ten yard run in the first quarter. Gilpin ran for 2 yards and the second touchdown and passed to Palmer for two more in the second half. Wayne Hawley intercepted a St. James' pass and ran 38 yards for the final touchdown of the year. It was another disappointing season for the St. Stephen's mud men. Second year Coach Charlie joseph was faced with difficult tasks of building a team virtually from scratch. As always, inexperience proved the fatal factor with only two of last years starters returning and most of the team composed of sophomores and juniors with only a hardy handful of seniors. However, the team did improve on last year's record and in the process, managed to throw a few scores into much older and more experi- enced teams. As it is a young team it will surely develop next year into one of the finest of all St. Stephen's soccer teams. Who's going to get it? These boys will make formidable op- ponents for any team when they join the varsity A squad. It would be impossible to commend every player by name, but a few people should be singled out for particular recognition. These include Chad Wray, an inside and one of the top scorers of the team, Malcolm Cheek, a half-back, Chad Davis, Fullback, and Todd Harding, goalie. These boys along with the other members of the Little Mud Men are 'looking forward to a better season next year. 119 This is Soccer Baseball lst ROW, L -- R: Gilpin, Dellastatious, Flynt, Edsall, Freret. 2nd ROW: Palmer, Johnson, Wilson, Smythe More au . Heading the return- ing lettermen is one of last yea.r's co-captains, Ricky Palmer. With Palmer on first base, Guy Symthe at second, Charlie Freret on short, and Phil Moreau at the hot corner, the infield has plenty of experience. Such names as Robin johnson, jack Edsall, Rusty Gilpin, Dick Wilson, and G. W. Transfer, Jimmie Worden make St. Stephen's outfield a good one. Returning also is last year's catcher, jay Davenport. The pitching corps will consist of Dick Flynt, Don Fontes, and two freshmen, Bill Fraley and Brad Sherman. 120 Track 09 FIRST ROW, L -- R: Moss, Crosman, Chamberlin, Lynch, Jacobson.
