The Administration and the Faculty ZEUS- KING OF THE GODS The ancient Greek was a deeply reli- gious person. He had a strong sense of his weakness before the grand and ter- rifying powers of nature, and he acknowl- edged his dependence upon the divine be- ings by whom he believed these powers to be controlled. The salient feature of the Greek religion was its incorporation of a hierarchy of individualistic divinities having human form and feelings. The Olympian gods, in fact, were nothing more than super humans. Anything a man could do one of the gods would be able to ac- complish with greater facility. As individ- uals, the deities of the Hellenes were not exemplars. All of them, though strong in respect to one phase of life, were weak in others. Zeus himself — the leader and most powerful of the gods — erred because of his all too human foibles. Col- lectively, however, the gods exerted upon the average Greek an influence which mo- tivated him to try to achieve the ideal of the fully developed personality. The be- lief was that each individual deity, jeal- ously protecting and encouraging his own sphere of human endeavor, would strike down unmercifully the individual who neglected his particular responsibility to- ward that god. Nemesis, the personifica- tion of retributive justice, also kept the Greeks from becoming too proud of one achievement, to the detriment of others. It can be said that the faculty is analo- gous to the Olympians, in that it exerts upon the student body an influence sim- ilar to that which the gods exerted upon the Greeks. Only the means are different.
