I A a S 1972 C f I2 O 1973 l l No one can tell another person in any definite way how he should think, any more than how he ought to breathe or to have his blood circulate. But the various ways in which men do think can be told and can be described in their general features. Some of these ways are better than others, the reasons why l they are better can be set forth. The person who understands what the better ways of thinking are and why they are better can, if he will, change his own ways until they become more effective, until, that is to say, they do better the work that thinking can do and that other mental operations cannot do so well. The better way of thinking that is to be considered in this book is called reflective thinking, the kind of thinking that consists in turning a subject over in the mind and giving it serious and consecutive consideration. Before we take up this main theme, we shall first take briefly the note of some other mental processes to which the name thought is given. The Stream of Consciousness. All the time we are awake and sometimes when we are asleep, something is, as we say, going through our heads. When we are asleep we call that kind of sequence dreaming We also have daydreams, reveries, castles built in the air, and mental streams that are even more idle and chaotic. To this uncontrolled coursing of ideas through our heads the name of ' dnb .dash thinking is sometimes given. It is automatic and .Y ,ink unregulated. Many a child has attempted to see mc whether he could not stop thinking - that is, stop ' . this procession of mental states through his mind - and in vain. More of our waking life than most of us would care to admit is whiled away in this inconsequential trifling with mental pictures, random recollections, pleasant but unfounded hopes, flirting, half-developed impressions. Hence it is that he who offers an offer is taken, he will only find out what happens to be going through the mind and what goes in this fashion rarely leaves much that is worth while behind. Reflective Thought Is a Chain. In this sense, silly folk and dullards think. The story is told ofa man in slight repute for intelligence, who, desiring to be chosen selectman in his New England town, addressed a knot of neighbors in this wise: I hear you believe that I don't know enough to hold office. I wish you to understand thatl am thinking about something or other most of the time. Now, reflective thought is like this random coursing of things through the mind in that it consists of a succession of things thought of but it is unlike in that the mere chance occurence of any chance something or other in an irregular sequence does not suffice. Reflection involves not simply a sequence of ideas, but a con-sequence - a consecutive ording in such a way that each determines the next as its proper outcome and in turn leans back, or refers to its predecessors. The sucessive portions of a reflective thought grow out of one another and support one another. They do not come and grow in a medley. Each phase is a step from something to something- technically speaking, it is a term of thought. Each term leaves a deposit that is utilized in the next term. The stream or flow becomes a train or chain. There are in any reflective thought definite units that are linked together so that there is a sustained movement to a common end. 2 If Q 6 gk 1 fx 1 1 X . - Q , ,ze ' NX' QV, ', '4jfNsA Qs' ' iii 7 4 ri V X I COHEGHIIS 060lCA1Il011 m611IOl2S CLl12l2ICUlA ORGADIZAUODS 1110126 CUl212ICL1lA SGDIORS Un0G12ClASSm611 lowerz school SDORTZS A05 Stlll 1110126 CLll212lCUlA 2 10 21 26 40 52 76 96 105 130 143 Oeolcatlon ,, fi If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. To choose one individual above all others who exemplifies the spirit of a perfect learning environment - this indeed, can be difficult. However, this obstacle has been overcome. The Seniors of '73 have picked a man who, in all aspects of his life, invariably succeeds in impressing others as leading a perfectly ethical existence. In both public and private life, each decision is weighed carefully against the an- cient Christian precepts to judge it's validity, and then examine with a pragmatic eye to de- termine it's practicality. In the classroom or out of it, this decision-making process enables him to judge human beings with a frank and unbiased view, so that he may acknowledge the good and heal the bad. We know of no other man who possesses this incisive, personal view of lgis fellow men. This yearbook, then, can only be dedicated to The Reverend Churchill J. The problem of school spirit, evident in the past few years, was still present. Yet, as the year progressed, so did team support. With the football games against St. Albans and Episcopal, and the entire basketball season, our school showed rewarding team support. Hopefully these supports foreshadow even a more stronger spirit to be seen in the fu. ture. With future spray artists like Hank Berg, promising wits like Keith Martin, St. Agnes Cheerleaders, parents and students who choose to lose their voices at sports events, our club cannot lose. Thanks must be offered to those who sup- port the present teams and look forward Hur the success of our club in the future, The purpose ofour club is to fight the lack of spirit, a fight which should and will begin and end with a bang. Osuna, Newton Bottom Row: Segal, Beckett, Smith, Mann, Metcalfe, Bullion, Cocl-trell, Boatner CROSS COUDIQ This years cross-country team was not a great success with a rather dismal record of three wins and seven losses. There were several reasons Har this type ofseason. To begin with the team was plagued with injuries. Several runners were affected with the usual shin-splints and stomach cramps. This wouldnt normally be any problem with seasoned veterans, but this years team was made up mostly of Sophomores with only one returning Varsity runner, Sam Metcalfe. Inexperience dealt a heavy blow from which the cross-country team never recovered. It was a building year Hur what is hoped to be a better team in future seasons. Two Sophomores headed the cross-country team, Johnathan Reed and Geoffrey Page, Hallowed by, Sam Metcalfe, captain ofthe team, David Rowland, Gary Cockrell, Jeff Hilton, Bill Beckett, Ronald Smith, Doug Mann, and Tom Bullion. For once the junior Varsity out-played the Varsity by winning the j.V. I.A.C. The results ofthe Varsity I.A.C. is still in doubt, but don't hold your breath, it's expected that the Saints placed seventh. It was a building year, and Mr. Osuna has high hopes that the group of runners now will be strong contenders, if not champs, in the l.A.C, 1973 al' me XLLLx 5 - MMM, , , ' if X 1 .sg , S 1 Q is A1 ' Q 1 -ee 9 1 1 1 ' , ,ff 1 -. , fs 1 Q QQ, ,Q 1 1,5 A - 2 1 ,ETQW-1111 3 ,f-Q 1 ' ,L 2 1 ' EV' 1 7 1 ' ,Q w.,,f .1 is Q 1' vs 1 1 1 . f - ff M ,ix g 1 f - -,, K -- , 5 V ' 5 A K v Q 1 H 1 f ., ,X Si- 2-Q Q ff MY fm 1+-ji 1 1 11 1 L ? f f M 1 :wf ' J Q111Q? . ,Q ' 1 111 i' S' W rs.- ' 'Off' '1 vs' I '. ,, , ,gli I tv. 4. -. .P . 'lui .A ' ' Jah With many inexperienced players and over half Freshmen, this year's j.V. had an excellent season despite their 3-4-1 record. Under the direction of Mssrs. Hagan and Daniels the team started out slowly, but came on very strong in their last game except Rst a heartbreaking loss to Episcopal. Following an opening loss to a strong B,1. team which had many varsity players on it, the j.V. tied Wrtmxeter 12-12 in an exciting game. Suffering from an impotent offense and many bad breaks, they dropped two straight to St. Albans and Friends. Many teams would give up after these dishearting losses, but the young Saints came back with an overposering 18-O victory over Landon, Phil Mulford and Bruce Freedman generated the offense while Flint Webb and Steve Olentine led the defense to this shutout victory. The following week, against a much stronger Bullis team, the whole team came together for a come from behind victory, beating Bullis 20- 1-4. This was definitely the high point of the season as Rick Collins scored twice and intercepted 2 passes. Flying high after two brilliant victories, the j.V. overwhelmed a Charlottesville school, Belfield, 1- 1-O. Rick Collins, alias Twinkee , scored both touchdowns in this victory. In the last game, against Episcopal, the Saints were robbed of two touchdowns on questionable calls which prevented an easy victory. One long run and several bad breaks gave the MHraL1d6rS fi couple oftouchdowns to leak by 12- 6. Several players will probably move right up into Varsity spots next year as they have gained the playing experience needed. Despite their lack of size and ability, compared to their opponents, their desire to win and their coherence as a team was the key to their victories. ! - 4951... Coach Herb Soles has built up his wrestling program amazingly climaxing with this year's team, the IAC Champions. The grapplers were not touched in IAC competition and they posted the best record in the school's history, 10- 3. The lower weights were occupied by young and coming studs , The outstanding 98er Mason Washington shares the school record with 15 pins. At 105 Bill Babyakin his first year of wrestling proved that he is a fierce competitor and has great potential. Will Holman at 112 with a record of 10-5-1 was probably the most im roved wrestler. Jim Allison broke into the line-up at 119 in early January replacing the injured Steve Olentine andp picked up many key points. At 126 Jim Headlock Vandervort spent the season stretching op nent's necks, while veteran Sam Metcalfe at 132 enjoyed one of his best seasons placing 4th in the State andyijn the St. Alban's tournament. Sophomore Steve Shaw did well at '38 against much older and more experienced opponents. Hank Berg's record doesn't show his true ability since he was in a very tough weight class at 145. Co-captain Risk Hesselbacher whipped many strong opponents and he placed 2nd in the State Championships. Robby Richardson dropped from heavyweight to 167 in one year and posted a winning record. Espen Bear Brooks, who has been on the Varsity Wrestling team for four years, had an excellent season at '85 losing only one match. Finally at heavyweight, George Read after winning the Episcopal match pulled several u sets during the course ofthe year. These last three weights have the job of either icing a victory or making up the diigerence in score. 114 v' K if lac champions 98 105 112 119 126 152 158 145 155 167 185 Hwr. Under the new leadership ofCoach Dick Hagen, who replaced Mr. Thompson, the Saints posted an excellent 15-7 record. Taking advantage of good height and quickness of this year's team, Coach Hagen em hasized tough man to man defense with a fast breaking offense to compliment it. After winning their first eight games they were finally toppled by a tough St. Albans squad, but came back later in the season to play one of their best games, beating the Bulldogs by an overwhelming 13 points. With Rmur out of the starting six players over 6'3 the Saints had one of the tallest teams in the area. At center was All-IAC David Porcella, 6'5 , who proved he was the best big man in the league. Also on the front line were juniors, Andy Homer and second team All-IAC Pete Steinhauser who controlled the boards against every opponent they played. At the guards were Ben johns, Andy Hitt, who was probably the best shooters on the team and jeffjones, who at 5'6 was an excellent ball handler and playmaker. One of the main reasons for success of this year's team was the strong bench support. Ricky Patrick, Evan Schwulst, and Chip Seignoius often filled in and played with great poise. Also giving needed support were Keith Martin and Cosper Scafidi. Following the regular season every year is the tournament which is always the high point of the season, but St. Stephens teams never seem to fair very well in it and this was no exception as they lost two games by one point a piece to Bishop Ireton and Good Counsel, for the third place trophy. Bishop Ireton ended up winning the crown with a close victory over St. Albans. Basketball at St. Stepens' seems to be rising to great peak and with the excellent junior Varsity team coming up the climb will be a short one. 122 s X , 65 ,FS ff SSS 55 65 71 56 64 45 62 58 42 62 59 63 52 45 45 41 89 68 48 Sr Christophers St, james Bullis George Mason Gonzaga O'Connell Friends Landon St, Albans Bullis Georgetown Prep Landon Friends Sr. Albans Bishop lreton Sr. Anselnfs St. james Episcopal Georgetown Prep .E libtfh- X ix .Nix 0 PP ll 52 58 -I6 54 41 45 38 56 -10 S8 45 42 go 58 71 Sl 60 53 123 lfyou can mnkc one heap ofull your winningsg And risk it on one turn ofpirch-and-ross, And lose, und starr again ur your beginnings And ncvcr brcathc ll word about your loss.
