Text from Pages 1 - 242 of the 1969 volume:

THE SANDS OF TIME For everything there is a sea- son, and a time for every mat- ter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. What gain has the worker from his toil? Ecclesiastes 3:1-9 The Senior Class Dedicates This Book of Time to Mrs. Lydia Herman . . . Mrs. Lydia Herman We thank Mrs. Herman for the Energy she has shown ’N teaching her students Good grammar and worthy Literature and presenting It in an interesting and Superior attitude of Hard work and determination. Mrs. Mauney has served our school for many years as teacher, librarian and CORONA Advisor. In fact, she even gave the SSHS annual its present name when- twenty-five years ago-Miss Rosa Sox asked her to try to think of a suitable new title for the LEADER. As Latin teacher, she devised the name CORONA which means “crown.” Since then, the CORONA has become the crowning point of each school year. Thank you, Mrs. Mauney, for your loyal service to the students of St. Stephens. Mrs. R. G. Mauney In Appreciation of Mrs. R. G. Mauney. 3 . In mid-winter, 1967, much to the regret of the student body of St. Stephens, Miss Georgia Sherrill was forced to retire due to an extended illness. As advisor for the 1966-67 Thomas Wolfe Chapter of the Inter- national Honorary Quill and Scroll Society, she was responsible for presenting the SSHS Official Coat-of- Arms and Official Fight Song to the student body. This Coat-of-Arms was placed for a lasting impres- sion on the past, present, and future St. Stephens students. As a constant reminder, it adorns the covers of the 1968 and 1969 CORONA and is also on a plaque in the hall outside the office. Thank you. Miss Sherrill, for your eternal contribution to the students of St. Stephens. 4 Stephens High School HICKORY North Carolina 1969 EDITORS: Marilyn Futrelle Peggy Moose Debbie Wilcox ADVISORS: Mrs. Christine Mauney Mrs. Loyd T. All these contests were held at the Tri County Golf Course. The Wrestling team is made up of fresh- man, sophomore, junior, and senior boys. They have had matches with many schools— Hickory High, West Lincoln, West Wilkes, East Lincoln, and Newton-Conover and will participate in a Conference match after the regular season is over. The 1968 Football team, unfortunately, got off to a bad start, but did finish with an over—all record of 7—3. This enabled the team to tie for second place in the Southern District 7 Con- ference. The squad even put four boys on the All -Conference team. They were Ricky Spencer, halfback; Larry Spencer, end; Larry Huffman; guard;and Kenny Bumgarner, fullback. The first touchdown of the season was in the SSHS-Mt. Holly game. Ricky Spencer pushed across the goal in the first quarter but this served as no indication of the final outcome as the Indians were defeated by a score of 26-14. The next week the team showed some “Indian power” when they went to play the Bandys Trojans. Butch Haynes scored his second touch- down of the year that night. Sullivan, Manager. The next Friday, the Indian braves were determined and, sure enough, gave the Gamewell squad a hard time. Our boys defeated the Blue Devils by a score of 27-6. But then we played Maiden. These Blue Devils were playing a special game that night for their home fans. The score was 28—7 in Maiden’s favor, but this was the last loss for the Indians! Bunker Hill met their first defeat when they came to our Indian territory. The Bears made the first score but the ballgame belonged to the Indians from that point on. Ricky really shined that night—he scored three touchdowns to help the Indians win 34-26. The Indians continued their winning streak when they traveled to Denver to play East Lincoln. Ricky Spencer. Roy Hoffman, and Kenny Bumgarner each made a touchdown to defeat the Mustangs, 21—19. Then came Hildebran. We didn’t score at all the first quarter but during the next three quarters, seven Indian touchdowns defeated the Royals. In the Homecoming game, the Indians were ready for the Blue Demons. Ricky again scored 3 touchdowns and Kenny Bumgarner made 1 touchdown to beat Granite Falls, 27 7. Foard arrived last. They presented no major problems to the Indians and the final score was 17-7. The active Junior—Varsity football and basketball teams are supported by these enthusiastic girls. Under the leadership of Candy Fry, they helped promote school spirit for the Freshmen and Sophomores. Most are looking forward to being Varsity cheerleaders. 58 The Boosters deserve praise. The St. Stephens Booster Club is com- posed of many interested parents. This organization is responsible for running the concession stand at all home games. Their projects have consisted of providing the electric scoreboard and constructing the bathrooms down on the football field. They also backed the Little League foot- ball program this fall for the seventh and eighth graders at the elementary schools. Mrs. Sylvia Hoke and Mrs. Christine Mauney, Advisors; Debbie Wilcox, Marilyn FutreUe, and Peggy Moose, Editors. The work on the 1969 CORONA began last spring with the selection of the editors. These editors chose the rest of the staff. In mid-July, the ad salesmen met with the business managers to organize the selling of ads. These people immediately got to work on their part of the annual. In September, football and cheerleading pictures were made and on October 15th, individual pictures were taken. The clubs, superlatives, teachers, and re- maining teams were made in mid- December. During Christmas vacation, Jan- uary, and part of February the actual writing took place. SeUing subscriptions to the annual was handled by the circulation man- agers in late January. And now in May, the students receive their history of 1969- the CORONA. 64 Past, Present, and Future: BUSINESS MANAGERS: Alan Jones and Alan Bolch. Now it is finished; our work has gone to press, has been printed, and is in the hands of these students. We, the editors, say “thank you” to all the helpful members of our staff, who have so loyally aided us in making the 1969 CORONA possible. We also thank Mrs. Mauney for patient guidance, and Mrs. Hoke for her inspirational ideas. Another thank you goes to Mr. Lewis for his superb photography and invaluable advice, and to Mr. Yount for his pictures and last minute aid. For their support, patience, help, and endurance, we also thank our parents. The year is fast drawing to a close. The Seniors already feel a little nostalgia, the Juniors are ready for their Senior privileges, the Sophomores realize they are almost upperclassmen, and the Freshmen know they will no longer be the lowest class. How- ever, we sincerely hope this CORONA will serve each and every student as a constant reminder of the school term. Football games, club meetings, classes, and a host of other memories are all to be found here. Time has past and will continue to pass but you will always have your history of 1969— the CORONA. 222 Time Must Pass Today has outrun yesterday And left her far behind Tomorrow waits and watches For new children of mankind. We have known the joy of youth, Light hearts and happy play, But time must pass, young grow up; We will move forward from today. The greatest gift of our journey. Is the friends who knew Our faults as well as virtues. Yet still to us were true. We are a searching society, Proud of the job well done, Often lost, but always sure, That we have just begun. With “Confidence our companion and Success” our destination. May we be ready to confront The demands on our generation. So pray for those who are leaving, That we may not become Lost in the noise of progress, Just one in a larger sum. The parents and the teachers Who knew we must prepare. Turned griping into gratitude With skillfullness and care. Let peace rest on our shoulders And patience precede strife, That each of us might marvel At the love and joy of life. The tears we shed are not for us But for those we leave behind, Life runs too fast for pain to last For regrets there is no time. We won’t look back, for time has “past” And now we must go on; The days that were, are here no more; Both good and bad are gone. Time together with time to spare. Time to learn, Time to care Someday, somewhere. We’ll find a new way of living. There’s a place for us, A time and place for us.
