Success Is A Continuous Journey . . - The Corona Hickory, North Carolina Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-Six Volume XXII Annual Publication Of ST. STEPHENS HIGH SCHOOL Advisors Mrs. R. G. Mauney Mr. Lawrence Gibbs Co-editors Alice Leatherman Linda Reep From Us To You... Often people think of success as the attainment of one's goal in life. Success is not a single achievement, but rather a series of achievements that span a lifetime. This has been a year filled with memo- ries, excitement, studying, gaiety, cheering for the Indians, and participating in clubs. Come with us now as we recall the events of this part of our journey of suc- cess. 4 Contents Dedication In Memoriam Administration Activities Athletics Features Classes Superlatives Statistics Advertisements Dedication We, the Senior Class, gratefully dedicate this 1966 Corona to our principal, Mr. Charles J. Bost. The beginning of a new school is not at all an easy task. It takes courage to agree to accept such a position. There are many problems to be solved and much work to be done. You have done well your task, and we deeply appreciate your fine work. We hope that you will continue to hold the position of principal of St. Stephens High School, and we shall never forget your patience and guidance. May I have your attention, please . . . Mr. and Mrs. Bost with their sons, Lee and Mike. 6 Mr. Charles J. Lunch time brings laughter and needed relaxation. 13 Work The office is the scene of much work, by both stu- dents and faculty. The library provides a quiet place for study. 14 These students are digesting lunch and geometry at the same time. Two, four, six, eight, ten, come on Libby put it in! Connie Beard wins the door prize- -a beautiful door. The Indians show a lot of defensive action. 15 Legs get tangled as players fight for the rebound. Administration 19 The faculty and administrative officials of a school compose a very important part of it. Their positions give to them respect, authority, and many duties which must be performed. In addition to the duties normally associated with a teacher and his work, suchas making and grading tests, there are many others. These include helping to make decisions about the school, spon- soring clubs, counselling with students, and the seemingly endless clerical work of recording grades in various places, noting absences, collecting book fees, and many more. Too often, the tremendous job done by our principal and teachers is not recognized or appre- ciated. We, therefore, take this opportunity to say a hearty thank you” to each and every one. How- ever, shortly after the second half opened, the Indian defense began to weaken and Granite's of- fense started to move. The Indians didn't score again and were defeated, 34-14. The last game with Fred T. Roard was just like the second half at Granite Falls. The Indians just couldn't move the ball and lost their fourth conference game. The Indians' conference record of five wins and four losses placed them fifth in conference standings. Their overall record, 5-5, and conference record were identical to those of the 1964 season. 64 FIRST ROW: Mike Yount, Steve Miller, Sidney Bostian, Joe Akins; SECOND ROW: Gary Daye, Lynn Baker, Randy Faucette, David Waters, R. This year they have reached the pinnacle of their high school career. To them belongs the privilege of eatingfirst and the prestige which accompanies the title of Senior. They have experienced the delight of receiving class rings, their last moments of cheering for the Indians, their Jr.-Sr. Prom, and the responsibility of being leaders in all school activities. And so, with mixed emotions, the Senior Class of 1966 prepares to bid Farewell to St. Stephens High School. 92 BEVERLY ABBOTT SUSAN ABBOTT DORIS C. Our Motto, ’’Success is a continuous journey— Not a destination”-- Our goal we hope to meet, With great anticipation. Our flower, the white chrysanthemum, Does show Gothic splendor For our class of ’66. We hold it very tender. Our colors wave of green and white, Which is to signify Our envy of the junior class And purity we can’t defy. In the far off future, We shall always hold dear The high school days we suffered through With often many a tear. We shall recall our freshman year When everything seemed mazed, Then all too soon came our senior year And graduation praised. And to our teachers, bless your hearts, For all of you we pray That you continue as you have To lead in wisdom day by day. Now to our parents, we can’t forget That through our awkward years We thank you for your goodness And understanding all our fears. We bid farewell to St. Stephens High, With an humbleness sincere. We shall always think of you As something very dear. Farewell, dear staff, and underclassmen, We leave it in your hands. God bless you all and keep you. ■', May you fit into his plans. X' . The second year of high school is one filled with a mixture of emotions. Sophomores are no longer hopeless Freshmen; therefore, they feel somewhat superior. They are not yet upper- classmen and are still somewhat neglected. However, there are some consolations offered, such as joining clubs and participating in sports. It is a year filled with varied experiences, such as the inevitable dissection of various crea- tures and feeling a sense of belonging for the first time. All in all, the Sophomore year is one that will surely never be forgotten. 112 Carol Abernathy Janet Adcox Joe Akins Mariane Alexander Margie Allen Ernest Allison Kenneth Arcuri Joyce Armstrong Kay Arrowood Jacky Baker John Barbour Sue Barker Marie Barnette Billy Beard Connie Beard Eva Benfield Ernie Benge Evelyn Bishop Raymond Boger Bruce Bolch Linda Bolick Steve Bolick Lynn Bolton Sidney Bostian Alice Bowman Bruce Bowman Donna Bowman Gail Bowman Gary Bowman Walter Brown Barbara Bumgarner Cathy Bumgarner Mitzi Bumgarner Patricia Burns Annie Byles James Byles Wanda Byrd Charles Canipe Roger Canipe Diane Carver Carroll Clark Ronald Clark Kay Cole Cathie Connolly David Crater Terry Crater Herbie Creasman Ellen Davis Kenneth Davis Linda Davis Pat Davis Carolyn Day Bruce Deal Pamela Deffenbaugh Billie Rae Dehart Nancy Donnelly Michael Drum Debbie Duncan Eddie Eckard Michael Eckard Steven Elmore Anne Flowers Kathy Foster Frances Fox Harley Fox Eric Frye Karen Frye Linda Garrett Chuck Gilbert Donald Gower Janice Griffin Donna Guest Mark Guthrie Terry Guthrie Gloria Hass Mary Hall Shannon Hall Keith Hamby Janice Hatchett Steve Hathcock Allen Hedrick Barbara Hedrick Betsy Hefner Cloyd Hefner David Hefner Gerald Hefner Lawrence Helton Nancy Hicks Harland Hodges Harry Hoke Kathy Hollar Kenneth Hollar Steven Houser Herman Howlett Charles Huffman Lynne Huffman Mary Huffman Ronald Huffman Steven Huffman Tony Huffman Willard Huffman David Icard Janice Jacobs Jan Jones Donna Kanupp Thetta Keller Vera Keller Deborah Killian Donna Killian R. The beginning of a new school year always beings a strange group of individuals. They are anxious and even eager to embark upon this arduous four year journey. The Freshman year is filled with the making of new friends and adjusting to high school life. There are rules to be learned, new study habits to be formed, and much work to be done. Per- haps the hardest adjustment that must be made is accepting the fact that they are last in almost all activities. Their future holds three more years of the fun, excitement, and studying that high school life brings. 120 Linda Adcock Roger Anderson Debbie Arrowood Donald Arrowood Rick Bass Carolyn Baumgarner Kay Beck Mike Blake Alan Bolch Jenie Bolick Teresa Bolick Mike Bollinger Jim Bowman Bill Bright Carey Brown Dale Bruner Lewis Brunner Delaine Buchanan Michael Bumgarner Tony Bumgarner Claudia Byrd Scott Caldwell Vicki Campbell Phyllis Carpenter Donald Carswell Rodger Carver Roger Chester Tamara Christenbury Michael Church Keith Clark Ronda Clark Pat Cline Terry Cloer Janice Collins Nancy Crater Elaine Creasman Charles Davis Fred Davis Harold Day Kathie Deal Lee Deal Roger Deal Donna Deitz Iva Jane Denton Peggy Dobbins Larry Dotson Royd Eckard Kenny Eidenmiller Darlene Falcone Denise Farr Joyce Flowers Danny Foster Linda Foster Barbara Fox Kenny Fox Charles Fraley Gloria Frye Jeanne Frye Wanda Frye Marilyn Futrelle Greylan Gantt Kent Gilbert Sheila Gilbert Bruce Gragg Ronald Gragg Terry Grant Donald Gray Kay Grooms Mack Guthrie Paula Hartsell Brenda Hefner Linda Hefner Steve Hefner Carolyn Helton Danny Henson Nola Herman George Hilton Tommy Hobbs Tim Hollar Mike Holman Danny Houston D}ane Huffman Jan Huffman Johnny Huffman Judy Huffman Teresa Hunt Tom Hunt Gary Isenhour Melvin Isenhour Richard Jacobs Noraida Jaramillo Alan Jones Kenneth Jones Marlene Jones Marsha Keller Bobbette Killian Debbie Killian Ephraim Killian Rita Killian Ronald Killian Stephen Killain Steve Killian Douglas Kirby Kathy Lackey Jerry Lafone Nicky Lafone Barbara Lail Billy Lail Gloria Lail Teresa Lail Kathy Laney Jerry Lanning Joyce Leatherman Darrell Lutz Julia Lutz 124 Jerry Mallance Bobby Martin Jimmy Martin Kay Martin Peggy Martin Mickie Mays Jimmy McAlister Vickie McCall Marcella McDaniel Steve McKinney Patricia McKinnis Valerie Miller Frank Minyard Brent Mitchell Sharon Moore Peggy Moose Anthony Moretz Shirley Morgan Randy Newton Pamela Norris Carolyn O'Brien Janice Perkins Kitty Petty Ricky Poovey Alan Price Shirley Price Marilyn Proctor Karen Propst Neta Propst Sharon Propst Richard Quinney Judy Reep Kathy Reeves Terry Reeves Rick Richards Henry Rigsby John Rocket Amy Rullman Brenda Rumley Janice Self Jeany Setzer Sandra Shulenburg Brian Sigmon Debbie Sigmon Shearin Sigmon Steve Sigmon Tim Sigmon Debbie Simmons Silvanus Sluder Sarah Smith Larry Spencer Ricky Sprouse Annji Stafford Paula Stallings Linzy Starnes Steve Starnes Suzanne Starnes Joyce Stilwell Brenda Thurman Debbie Townsend Joyce Townsend Bobby Turner Keith Totherow Sharon Underwood Melodie Veit 126 James Wails Cynthia Ward Sandra Ward Sherry Warren Diane Watts Teresa Wheeler Vickie White James Whitener Sherry Whitener Linda Wilcox Sandra Winters Pamela Wright Tommy Yates Annie Mae York Patsy Yount 127 Senior Su BEST ALL AROUND Steve Rader and Libby Miller MOST TALENTED Mike Houston and Carolyn Herman MOST INTELLECTUAL Brent Sigmon and Alice Leather man WITTIEST Dennis Killian and Cheryl Cole 28 MOST DEPENDABLE Steve Rader and Linda Reep MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Brent Sigmon and Alice Leatherman MOST COURTEOUS Ronald Bolick and Vicki Beck BEST SCHOOL SPIRIT Lynn Frye and Gail Austin 129 BEST CITIZENS Steve Rader and Alice Leatherman BEST LOOKING Darrell Sigmon and Joyce Craig FRIENDLIEST Dennis Killian and Gail Austin MOST ATHLETIC Gary Daye and Libby Miller 130 Senior Statistics BEVERLY JEAN ABBOTT Homeroom Officer, Treasurer 1, Reporter 3; Home Economics Club 2; French II Club 3; Jr.-Sr. Prom, Jr. Chorus 3, Entertainment Committee 3; Torch Staff 4; Camera Club 4; Commercial Club 4; Glee Club 4. So -- although it's been said many times, many ways — we extend a heartfelt Thank you to each one. We say thank you to Mrs. Mauney and Mr. Gibbs for their guidance and assistance; to Mr. Yount for his fine photography; to Delmar for their photographs and the publication of our yearbook; to Mr. Bost for his patience and understanding; to our staff members for the excellent work they've done; and to each and every student, for it is they who make the history recorded in the CORONA. We sincerely hope that we have captured in word and in picture the happenings of this school year, and that each one who possessesa copy of the'66 CORONA will treasure it as astorehouse of precious mementos.
