Our Prayer Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. Psalm 119: 105 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Psalm 90: 12 —C—k. Dear Old—Si—Stap hftiifl_High School I17 i % nr IW l iftfvu mss POEM One part of our school life is past, So now we say farewell; And all the things we've learned in school In all our hearts will dwell. The Golden dawn of our new life Can clearly now be seen; The glorious freshness of this dawn Is symbolized by Green. We've proudly picked the Yellow Rose, For beauty and for hope; And as we onward march through life, May none of us e'er grope. Today we follow , is our theme Tomorrow, we shall lead . Our motto is our challenge bold That stands behind each deed. Dear Teachers, do accept our praise For countless things you've done. Though years may come and years may go, You'll help each race that's won. 'Tis hard to speak the parting word; Yet duty calls us on. Keep us, St. Stephens, in your heart, For you’re to us a throne. Miriam Spencer Dear Old St. Stephens High School, We sing your praise. Your fame shall be our aim. Through all our days Oh. ! raise aloud the chorus! When we leave your portals Be we far or nigh. We'll be found cheering for St. Stephens High. 1 . IWr Old St St i t— rag . Sixteen When we entered St. Stephens High School this year, we realized that for many of us, it would be our last time to register as students. Although many of us after our Senior year will go out to seek our fortune in the world, we shall always look back over our high school years as the happiest ones of our lives. Four years ago a group of students, resembling a herd of stampeding cattle, entered St. Stephens. But alas, these were the Freshmen, and we were separated under the leader- ship of two teachers, Miss Sherrill and Mr. Clark. By our Sophomore year we had gotten in the swing of things, but again we were sepa- rated because of our large number. Mrs. Purkey and Mrs. Anderson were our advisers. Our Junior year, under the leadership of Mrs. Lonon and Mrs. Purkey, was a most active one. Soon after school began, we started selling magazine subscriptions in order to raise money for the Junior-Senior Banquet. We sold over thirteen hundred dollars worth of subscriptions from which we received a certain percentage. For reaching our goal, we received a gold plaque from the Curtis Magazine Company. Emma Lee Duncan won a watch for being the highest salesman. The banquet was a great success, we thought. Due to overcrowded conditions in our school, it was held at the Country Club. The theme we used was ’The Gold Rush”, and we shall always cherish the memories of that night. Now we have reached our goal------------------Seniors! As we settled down in the Senior room, we realized there was much hard work ahead of us. We knew, however, that under the direction of our adviser, Mrs. Mauney, we could accomplish our tasks. As we prepare to go out and search for what the future holds, we wish to express our appreciation to Mr. Murray, our Principal, and to each of our teachers who have helped us to reach our goal through his or her contribution to our school life. When we reach our graduation, we shall be filled with mixed emotions--happiness be- cause of what we have accomplished and sorrow because of the many ties and friendships we shall leave behind. Our motto ’’Today we follow; tomorrow we lead” has been much encouragement to us. It is true that we have been following our parents and teachers more fully than we realize, for as soon as we graduate, we must really put into practice our ability for leadership. Indeed, throughout our entire life we shall always treasure precious memories of Dear Old St. Stephens High! Finally, Mrs. Mauney presents the Senior class of 1951 to the world with the prayer that each one may number his days and apply his heart unto wisdom. In witness whereof, We. the Class of 1951, have to this our will, set our hands and seal this Commencement Day, Anno Domini, one thousand nine hundred and fifty one. Jean Parker--Sue Hedrick, Testators Pti c I unity Well, here I, Xancy Poovcy , am at Virginia Beach for my summer vacation. My cot- tage seems unusually quiet and desolate, and as I sit here, it is hard to concentrate on the new novel I am beginning. Looking out my window at the storm-swept beach, my mind drifts hack to the days gone by and to those who were my comrades in the class of '51 at St. Stephens High. Each dim footprint on the sands of time seems to symbolize a member of that class. The first print is that of Frances Beard, who is surrounded by flowers. She now owns a florist shop, the Say It With Flowers . Mitzi Beckom is now singing with the Metropolitan opera. She’s that attractive girl with the Golden Voice , I so well remember. Ah, there’s Billie Bolick , who is now first lady-editor of the Hickory Daily Record. I remember Billie's fine work on that dear old school newspaper, The Torch . Dorothy Huffman , Marshall Sigmon., and Gerald Reed are also doing newspaper work. They are working for the New York Sun . Dot is a reporter;Gerald, a photographer; and Marshall, cartoonist. Harvey Bumgarner and his wife, the former Susie Mullen, own a little rose-covered cottage and are busy looking after all the little Bums . Well, look! There’s the cute little cheerleader who spent all her spare time writing letters back in '51. But now my classmate. Petty Clarke, is Mrs. Jerry Beam. Helen Cline and Sue Hedrick are teaching school. Helen is teaching Latin, and Sue, French. I remember how they used to love those subjects. What have we here? It looks like--it is! Clarence Deal and Fay Fisher are washing cars. They own the Feal Esso Station, a combination of Deal and Fisher. Ainvanlia Herman and Sylvia Miller are now bookkeepers for the firm of Yount and Flowers, General Contractors. Ah, yes, Donald Yount and Wade Flowers have gone far in the business world. By the way, Yount and Flowers are constructing the mansion of Eva Mae Goins and Richard Mitchell, who are going to be married soon. My, My, love must be in the air! There are Bob McKinney and Grace Mullen shopping for a diamond. How well I remember that Mrs. Purkey couldn't separate them in history class at St. Stephens. Now. how did a Drive-In theater get in on this? Oh, it's Jeanette Luts, whose husband operates the Springs Road Drive-In! I'll bet she's happy. Theaters seem to be quite the thing. Here I see Earl Canipe as manager of the Carolina Theater in Hickory. Shirley Hedrick is working there as usherette. Frances hard is now librarian in the Newton-Conover library, with Virtinia Minton as her assistant. Meet the new Miss America, the former Miss Dorothy Ixinier. She and her sister-in- law Faye Miller, who is a Physical Education Director, are touring the United States. Jewel Yount is still working at St. Stephens. Now, she is the private secretary of prin- cipal W. A. Murray. Nursing seems to be one of the most loved occupations. I orena Moody, Marian Hollar, and Marcella Fullbritht are all very happy in their work at Grace Hospital in Morganton. Now. can you imagine this? Charles Shuford is Police Chief in Hickory. He seems to be hearing a court case, that of Alvin Hefner. The charge? Speeding. Emma Lee Duncan is still as popular as she was in '51. She is entertaining our own Mr. Bob Stinson, now the President of the United States, and his Vice-President, Mr. Tom Ker- sey . Also with him are Misses Sue Lail and Petty Flowers, now private secretaries of the President. Jean Parker is co-owner of Hill Top Skating Rink, and Annette Forbes is a skating direc- tor there. I wonder if they have ever gotten enough skating. Martaret Cooke and Betty Matthews are still supporting Hickory High's football team, it seems. Now, they watch their sons who play on the team. —y.—b Dear Old St Stap hftgg high School . 1—1 1 L : IVn.1 ut iify-onc Joan Herman, now a professional artist, has one of the largest studios in the United States. One of the most famous of her works is now hanging in the museum of art in Wash- ington. Looks as if somebody else is very prosperous too. Doris Moretz, Ruby Gilbert, and Josephine Huffman operate the largest dress shop in Hickory. Just think, they're still to- gether after all these years. Football fans don’t cry, Choo-Choo anymore, for the cry, Lingerfelt”, has taken its place. Yes, it's our own Pill Lingerfelt, who is playing in the Rose Bowl. Ardent baseball fans know well the name, Cecil Queen, who now is a catcher for the Giants. He has a batting average of .432. Let's not forget Miriam Spencer,; who attends every game and at the same time manages Cecil. Ken Huffman now owns the Hickory Electric Company and Sarah Shook is his secretary. They, too, seem very successful. Ah, how this hour of recalling high school days and of visualizing my classmates as they are today reminds me of Longfellow's A Psalm of Life which we loved when we were Juniors-- And, departing, leave beHind us footprints on the sands of time . I wonder if it would ever be possible for our class to meet again in Mrs. Mauney’s classroom in our beloved Alma Mater. But now------back to my novel.
